dudu osun soap- meiyama

2008-06-30 11:02:58

I am so sorry about what happened with your skin , I am in my fifties and suffered from T zone acne since my twenties . I don't know if the black soap I tried years ago is the dudu osun soap but I did not have good results . For years I used over the counter products etc. with limited results.
About four years ago I was referred to a dermatologist for another problem , and I was treated for my acne and my skin is clear after all these years . Thank God I have health insurance !

My advice is if you can see a dermatologist and have your skin condition diagnosed and treated by a specialist in the field .

God Bless

I took a lot of pictures a few months ago each time I did my hair but
I'm so lazy about getting pics developed. But after looking at a some
ofthe albums you guys have I started taking new pics last night. I'm
doing my hair now actually and taking pics along the way. But I'll try
to get some posted next weekend and take it from there. You have NO
IDEA how long i've waited for my husband to buy a digital camera, thank
goodness he finally did :)

New Pictures

2008-06-30 05:04:28

I have added some new pictures to my fotki page. My girl friend did my
hair in the latch hooks and I really like it. To me it resembles the
micros. Excuse my cheap camera, I need to buy another one. Let me know
what yall thing. The only thing I don't like about the hair style is
the type of hair I have, it tangles so bad, maybe i'll have to
experiment with different brands until I find one that is alright.

Hi-

I use the ProActiv as well, even though I realize now that my acne problem is not that severe as shown in the ads. The product does work, but it is not all natural.

Hi Meriyama,
I am such a product junkie and have tried so many variety of products
on my face. I do currently use a skin cleanser from Avon, but, what
works BEST for me is WATER - believe it or not!! NOT splashing my face
with it, but, drinking LOTS and LOTS of it!! Also, a friend of my mine
have used the pro-active (I'm sure you've seen the commercial) and the
testimonies have proven true. My friend's face look and feel as clear
and smooth as a baby's bottom, no lie!

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Updated Fotki Album--Catrina

2008-06-29 08:03:16

Hi Catrina--

I think that even if your daughter gets a perm when she grows up, she will probably go back to her natural hair eventually.

I wasn't allowed to perm or straighten my hair until I was 18. I grew up envying the black girls who had perms or 'good' hair. But after about five years of relaxing my hair, I didn't like it anymore, but I was not courageous enough to grow it out. My hair was relaxed for almost 18 years before I went natural, and now my hair is loced.

Here is my album with photos of my loced hair. I also added a photo of my natural hair as a teen, and two photos of my hair when it was relaxed, but those were not digital photos and don't show up too well in the album:

Thank you so much. She now starting to love her own hair just as much as I do. I am continuing to tell her not to put any chemicals in her hair. She says to me, Mom you had a perm. I tell her yeah a did and it wasn't helping my hair and that's why I let dad cut all my perm hair off, so don't make my mistake. My hope is if I continue to tell her this now, it will sink in and she won't do it. But who knows, she may take my advice or not. At least I know I did my part.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Garnier Fructis

2008-06-29 05:24:36

it sounds like you want a wet set. i never tried it but i think you just apply gel to wet hair and sit under a dryer. i don't think garnier fructis has a real good product for that. the curl cream is more of a sticky cream, more like a twist butter. i would suggest aloe vera gel for a wet set.

Fine Hair

2008-06-29 03:44:36

Hello everyone,
I just became a member of this group. I've just started my transition
to going natural and wanted some advice from anyone with fine hair.
How much different is it to go natural when you have really fine
hair? I'm hoping that I will find strength in it, but I'm not sure
how it will affect it's look.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Water/Oil/Cocoa Butter Mix--Lina

Thanks Lina! You always know just what to do ;-)!

Tobi
Petrolina Okoro <okorolina40@...

you could melt the cocoa butter in a glass pyrex container (in a double boiler) and then add the oil. add the distilled water slowly, then add the emulsifier - a natural one is soy lecithin, which comes as a liquid form in many stores - check the baking aisle in the health food store. 1tsp may enough for about 8oz of product.. whip with a stick or electric blender (the handheld type is easier to use).

pour into your container of choice and then let cool.

hope that helps!!

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] transitioning

2008-06-28 03:00:02

Meriyama and Gretchen:
No matter HOW bad you want to keep/hold onto the length, you are doing
yourself (and your hair!) a disservice. Where the new growth and permed
hair meet puts alot of tension and stress on the hair. Even if you
don't cut it, it's gonna fall off on it's own and cause more grief. I
honestly believe that you won't feel free and better until it's gone -
but that's my opinion. Even when it's short, most natural hair grows
quick when you're taking the best care with it! You can never have
regrets when you do the right thing. God Bless!

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Cetearyl Alcohol--Mixing Oil and Water--Water/Oil/Cocoa Butter Mix...

2008-06-28 02:46:41

Hi--

You could mix this together and put it in your hair (this would keep it soft!), but if you left this mixture standing in a container, the ingredients would separate without an emulsier.

Tobi
"just locin by . . ." <just_locin_by@...

GO TOBI !!!!!! [INLINE]
o.k., seriously, so Tobi, if I mix distilled water, an oil, and some cocoa butter, it would mix?????
(this is a serious question)
thanks!
just_locin_by . . .

Tobi-Velicia Johnson <tvelicia@...

Hi again--

Actually, oil and water do not mix, that's why an emulsifier is used--it stabilizes a mixture such as oil and water. Otherwise, the oil and water in products such as lotion and conditioner would separate.

I actually have a degree in biology and had to take chemistry and organic chemistry. Chemistry is not fun, but I have found it useful sometimes ;-)!

Tobi
"J. Hardeman" <moo_972001@...

Hi Tobi!
Thanks so much for that! I guess I could have done some research on
it. :) But please help me understand...how does oil & water mix?
that is the question that keeps "picking at me". If I would have
known I would be faced with these hair issues, I would have majored
in chemistry.
Thanks Again!

Hello ladies, I haven't written for a while. I just wanted to
inform everyone that I have been experimenting with different
concoctions and have found two that work really well with my hair,
my daughters hair and my 16 yr old cousins hair. All three of us
have different texture so I am pleasantly surprised of the outcome.
Anyway I wanted to share this with you!!!
I decided that the Hydrating Curls by Pantene was excellent, but I
wanted a deep conditioner also. I added honey and olive oil to it
and viola, I have an instant on hand deep conditioner. Depending on
how much hair you have will determine the amount of honey and olive
oil to use. Now, I have tried the ORS mayonnaise deep conditioiner
(YUKKKK) and I have used the QP Elasta DPR 11 and I was not as
pleased with it. Both were awful to detangle the hair and I
saturated my hair with them and water. On top of that my hair felt
hard after they were rinsed out. I tried these on my daughter also
with the same awful results.
I have also used Plain Yogurt, with castor oil and African pride
Braid ease out as my, before the baking soda wash, hair treatment.
Oh my goodness, my hair felt so wonderful. I saturated my hair with
the APB ease out, messaged my scalp really, really really, good(eyes
rolling around):+). I then saturated my head with the castor oil
(next time I will mix the APB ease out and castor oil, will be
easier)again I messaged my head gooooooood!!!! Then, I saturated my
head with the Plain Yogurt and messaged (you know!). I placed a
plastic bag on my head for 1 1/2 hours. After a good rinse my hair
was soft as ever, I couldn't believe it, I then CO-Washed my hair
but with very little CO.
I mixed these items up for my cousin and she has been asking me to
make more for hair.
I also use a shea butter mixture for my hair after all the rinsing
and washing is done. It has safflower oil, carrot oil, jojoba oil,
hempseed oil, advocado oil tocopherals oil in it. I make this my
self.
How I use this, I saturate my hair with the Motowngirls spritz, then
I use about a nickel size of the sheaflower, rub hands together and
spread through my hair taking care to get my hair line real good. I
don't worry about oiling my scalp it seems to seep down that way,
plus Motowngirls spritz has oil in it too. I use sweet almond oil
in her spritz.
I hope this comes in handy for some.
PS: My shrinkage is a B**** the first day, but my hair is clean,
soft and smells devine.....LOL
Peace

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Skin Pores

2008-06-27 13:31:48

I think hot water opens pores and cold water 'closes' them, temporarily. This is why very warm water is used in facials, and a cool toner afterwards. However, nothing will decrease the size of pores.

Tobi
Diane <dianejmartin@...

Can anyone help me with this? I always forget which water temperature
opens pores and which closes them. Is there a good way to remember? Do
people usually wash their hair with warm water only? Tx!

What's your screen name?

City/State?

Loose, loced, or transitioning?
Loose
How long has your hair been like it is?
It fell out about 1.5 yrs ago, because of color(I was
completely bald in some spots). So I cut it into a
short style and started wearing braids. I would
generally wear braids for 2 months and loose for 1
month and I finally just couldn't take the braids
anymore. So in May I stopped wearing braids
"officially"!
How long is your hair? Its about 8 inches, but I
really need a trim.
What are your 3 favorite products?
I haven't tried a lot of products yet. I like White
rain and suave conditioners. I use this "new" curl
something from Pantene, mixed with water and light
olive oil, which I really like. I haven't found a
brand of moisturizer that I like yet. I have quite a
few Organic Root Stimulator products, but I keep
sticking with that pantene mixture.
What are your 3 favorite styles? hmmm, its still new
to me, but...
I wear twists, twistouts, puffs and flat twists to
work. At home I usually wash and go on the weekends
and spend sunday night detangling and preparing for
work.
Do you style your hair at home, or go to a salon?
I do it at home.
What is/has been your toughest hair struggle, physical
or mental?
Just letting go and being me. It was hard not having
long straight hair, I couldn't even get used to having
short straight hair because it had been relaxed and
long my whole life. My old hairdresser tried to
convince me to wear a TWA and I couldn't do it. I
actually was thinking of getting a relaxer in April
and just wearing a bob or something until my hair grew
longer (cause I couldn't do braid again!)and then I
ran across Motowngirl.com. I was officially hooked.
Are you natural for life? Why or why not?
I am natural for life. I love my hair, the variety,
the fullness, just everything. I feel natural with my
own hair doing its thing and I love it.
Please include a link to your website or online hair
album.
I don't have a website or online hair album. I did
take a bunch of pictures that need to be developed BUT
i finally got a digital camera. So I'll start one
ASAP!

Latch hooking locs

2008-06-25 22:51:24

Hello,
I use the latch hook method for tighting my locs i've been using that
method for about 4 years since the start of my locs. I've noticed that
they have been getting thinner and thinner so had to join some
together, and with using this method I cant seem to make it look neat
like I see other people with locs. Can anyone tell me how I can make
it look neater and to prevent my other locs from getting thin. I live
on Long Island so if anyone on LI can show me that would be great also.
Thanks,

Hey my name is Trina. I've been a member for some time but I haven't posted much. I really enjoy reading all the post that do come across this board. When ever I feel like throwing in the towel when it comes to my hair, I always come on this board and get encouraged all over again. I've added some more pictures to my album, so chek them out. You will notice that I have only one style. I really want to try new styles, but my hair doesn't hold the two strand twist or the box braids at all. So I wear a fro' most of the time. So enjoy.

My name is Roxanne and my family and I relocated 6m ago to Kobe, JAPAN
from Ohio. We are on a corporate move. Prior to moving I wore a very
short haircut. My hair has been natural since Feb 1998.
My problem is, I haven't had my hair cut since Dec 2005 and I really
don't know what to do with it. Lately, I have been wearing it in 2
strand twist and then after about 4 days I untwist and wear like that
for about 2 day. Then an afro for 1 day before I repeat the cycle.
My hair is a soft texture, but my curls are tight. I would love a way
to loosen those curls up. I also have no one here to do my hair, so I
need some advice on how to maintain this look.
Right now I am only using Wondergro. It's okay, but nothing special.
I would love to get suggestions on styles/products that I can use of
mine and my daughters hair.
Blessings,
Roxanne

Re: Latch Hook Locs

2008-06-23 12:32:17

Hello, Sandra

If you are considering locking your hair, you may want to check out sisterlocks. I have been on my natural journey since January 2004 and have been experimenting with a lot of naturals styles, but just hadn't been able to find something that I could create different styles. Then in our group someone mentioned sisterlocks. I researched the website and was captured by all of the different styles that each lady was able to create with their sisterlocks. I also live in the Houston area and I have found a sisterlock consultant in this area. The sisterlocks give you a lock of styling versatility and you have them put in while you are transitioning to your natural hair. This technique locks your hair from the end to the scalp and may work for your hair. I have a consultation in July and if I like the sample locks then I will be sisterlocked in August. You can check out sisterlocks http://sisterlocks.com/index.html

I know this didn't answer the question you asked, but hopefully this will provide you with another option in locking your hair. Be Blessed on the journey.

Latch Hook Locs

Hello fellow naturals,
Does anyone know of a loctician in the Houston area that uses the latch
hook or crochet method? Also, does your hair need to be a certain
length in order to use the latch hook method? My hair is about 2.5
inches long, and my comb coils unravel after about two weeks
(especially the bottom row) no matter what I do.
Thanks in advance,
Sandra

I love the two strand twists because once they're done, it's a low
maintenance style. The twist out is my fav - the biggest drawback
for me? it only looks really cute for a day or two. after that,
it's frayed out and wild looking.
I'm very curious to hear what the group has to say.
P.S. Ur twist out picture is really cute.

Hi Kim,

Thanks for the heads up to adjust the comments setting in my Fotki guestbook! If you want to leave comments you now can at: http://public.fotki.com/virtualdiva/. Thanks everyone for the compliments.

Kim, you asked what I do from home: I own a copywriting & virtual assistance firm. A virtual assistant is someone who usually has lots of onsite administrative assistant, secretarial or other related experience. We provide those services to other small business owners or independent entrepreneurs who are overwhelmed with the administrative side of their businesses.

For instance, a salon owner might need help with bookkeeping, the development of her marketing collateral (brochures, website content & maintenance, verifying client appointments, a salon newsletter, etc.) or someone to follow up with her vendors, place orders, etc. She could connect with a virtual assistant who would handle those duties so she will have more time to do things that will make her money: care for clients and market her salon. A consultant or life coach might need someone to execute their marketing or PR campaign, handle their mailing list and newsletter, draft their documents, etc.

Virtual assistance is a quickly growing field in which lots of African-American women have secured leadership roles.

To learn more about virtual assistance in general you can visit my site at: www.SOHOSupportSolutions.com. To learn more about mechanics/technology necessary to convert killer admin skills into a virtual business you can visit: http://www.takeitvirtual.com/VA.html.

I also head up Virtual DiVAs - a professional group of women that work online and are trying to take our businesses to the next level by adopting a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. So, my schedule can be a bit crazy at times. For me, going natural completely fits into a more balanced lifestyle.

SIDE THOUGHT: I am so impressed with the number of people on this board who have taken a natural lifestyle a step further - the foods that they eat, the products that they use in their homes. I tell people how great this group is all the time and about the wonderful tips that I've learned. I've had three people - all African-American - say the same thing: "I didn't know that there were that many Black people into that (natural, healthy, environmentally conscious lifestyle)."

Naturally You! completely rocks! I hope someone does put together a Naturally You! Cruise or something. That would be great. I just hope it's not at the same time as the Virtual DiVAs retreat I am planning for next spring.

Namaste,

Wonderful Natural Hair

2008-06-21 17:43:44

Hi All!
I just came back from the Essence Festival Seminars. I am glad to say
that there were soooooo many women with Natural Hair. It was like for
every one relaxed head, there were 2 natural heads. Since I am still
in the transition mode, it really solidified my decision to go
natural. Even my girlfriend that was with me started considering how
she could make the transition. I have never seen so many black woman
in one venue with natural hair (young children, teens, middle aged
women, seniors etc.)and they were all working it! I am so glad this
web-site was created, I have seen the change in society for
acceptance. Even the first high profile Miss Natural Hair...."Angela

Love the pictures! Natural hair really brings out your beautiful features--It seems to me that we all look so much more beautiful with our own hair texture. When I see 'permies' on the train, downtown, where-ever--I think to myself, "She would look so much prettier with natural hair!"

Re: Product Suggestion

2008-06-20 16:14:19

All of the folks on this site have been very helpful when I asked a
similar question. I have hair similar to yours. I don't know the
number of my pattern and all, but I do know that it is Nappy and super
dry. Sometimes I cant get a comb through it, so I just leave it alone
and wear my wigs! But really, I am just being lazy and I know I need
to moisturize it more. I too have been searching for the 'magic
potion' for curliness. I have come to realize that I don't have "Pita-
Rikan Hair" and so I am just looking to add moisture and work the tiny-
tight curl pattern that I have. So far I have been suggested to use
Halo Products (for curly hair)--shampoo and conditioner. I have also
been told to use Carol's daughter Mimosa hair honey. I have not tried
either product, but I will say that I did a strand test using the Halo
Curl enhancing cream (that I bought once I saw it at the salon) and it
seemed to give my hair the 'conditioner on' look. But after it dried,
it went back to the dry look. I think it may last for a few hours
though. But keep in mind that I did not use all of the products
together, so it may work better then. Another suggestion that I
actually got from my hair stylist is to use Miss Jessie's butter
cream. My stylist used it to do some coil twists and it made my hair
shiny. She actually suggested I wear a curly style using the cream.
She said to simply comb the cream through section by section, and it
will work. She showed me how it curled doing a strand test. I'll have
to try that another time. I love the smell and all. I was sceptical
since I read so many different views on the Miss Jessie line, but I may
actually buy it. I hope this helps!

Hi,

I have recently started using the Kinky - Curly line of products. It really maintains and enhances your curls and it all natural with no bad ingredients. I love to wear my hair down and since I have been natural I really haven't just worn my hair down and loose until now. I love it and the prices are very reasonable. Their website is www.kinky-curly.com . I use all of the products except for the Knot Today. I have not tried it. It is wonderful. It keeps my hair moisturized and I think it looks great.

Re: dudu osun soap

2008-06-19 06:02:50

Hi Meriyama,
I have the same problem with adult acne. I haven't
tried the dudu osun soap, but here is the advice that
I was given by an esthetician:
* DO NOT USE ACNE PRODUCTS!!! They contain either
benzoil peroxide or salicylic acid. Both are very
harsh, cause irritation, and, ironically, can actually
lead to more pimples.
* Wash your face three times a day (morning, after
work, and bedtime) with a gentle cleanser like
Cetaphil (I use the generic Equate version from
Wal-Mart.) Use either your fingers or a soft wash
cloth to avoid further irritation.
* Treat your pimples with a solution of tea tree oil
and distilled water. This immediately reduces pain,
swelling, and redness. It is also less harsh than most
commercial astringents.
* Commercial fade creams contain hydroquinine, another
harsh ingredient that can irritate and discolor skin.
The dark spots on your face are most likely due to low
iron or mild anemia. Start taking either iron
supplements or a good multivitamin with iron. I take
GNC Women's Prenatal Vitamins. After about two weeks,
you should notice a difference.
This routine has worked wonders for my skin. You can
use the dudu osun soap in place of the Cetaphil and it
should still work. Please let me know how it goes.
Best of luck,
Sandra

that you might want to try.

Hi Meriyama,

I have the same problem with acne and the dark spots on my face. i have been using dudu osun soap for about two weeks now. I use it on my face and body. It has help tremendously.I also realized that keeping my scalp clean and unclogged helps with my complexion. I have body acne as well on my chest and back. I still suggest you use some kind of moisturizer after you wash with the black soap. I'm use Palmer's coco butter in the jar but i dont cake it on near my problem areas.

I have also used "Proactive" www.proactiv.com you may have seen the infomercial. It works very well but can pricey depending on your budget. Whatever routine you find that works just be consistent(washing your problem areas morning and night). keep me informed on your progress. I love to hear different suggestions. I helps so much!!

Hi everyone,
I am so excited I joined this group. I have been battling with acne
for the last 10 months. It's due to working out at the gym and the
impurities coming out while I sweat. The only time I've had problems
with my skin is when I hit puberty (which is more than 20 years ago).
Everyone told me I wasn't drinking enough water but I drink 64 oz. per
day every day. I have been using neutragena acne products which are
very harsh on my skin (they cause a lot of drying and itch). They help
but they do not due the full job I still break out but not as much. I
also have dark spots all over my face from pimples. I tried using fade
cream which helped but when I stopped using it I am left with even more
larger dark spots. Anyway I am saying all this because I used to use
dudu osun on my body but not my face because I thought it might make my
face break out. Now I have been doing research and from all of your
advice I think it is just what I need. I found it at
visvinunlimited.com/site/1245541/product/DO1444 it is long but they
sell it 6 bars for $11. I have a shipment coming in the mail and I
will keep you posted with my progress.

Fw: Question

2008-06-16 00:11:04

Hi Claire,

My suggestion is to research the products you are using. Check the ingredients. I get alot of advice from www.nappturality.com and www.motowngirl.com. The nappturality website has an article named "10 chemicals to avoid" which is helpful. I know off the top, mineral oil and petrolem is a no-no. Water is a must!!!!! I'm still learning with my TWA so i cant suggest any products because i havent found anything that i can trully live without. I apply Elasta QP mango butter to wet hair and I use almond and olive oils every couple of days. I read as much info on "being natural" as possible and I'm not afraid of trying something different.

Hi Everybody,
I tried the pink stuff once and I noticed my hair felt so soft the
first day then it went down hill from there. By the end of the week
my hair was so dry and brittle, you need to throw that stuff away.
The newest love of my life is natural shea butter. I can put it on
and it will keep my hair mosturized for a few days where other oils I
use, I have to put them in everyday because my hair is so porous from
relaxer and color. I can't wait till my natural hair grows out.

Re: new member - cyntanykia

2008-06-15 21:13:49

Hi Cyntanykia,
Don't worry too much about your husband. He'll get use to the idea
and the look. He's like so many of us~ use to seeing straight hair.
Be it relaxed or pressed, we (black folks) were 'trained' to believe
that straight hair was pretty, kept, clean, etc.
My husband was supportive of me (this time). The very first time I
wanted to go natural (about 6 years ago) he wanted to know if I was
going to 'look like a boy'. He'd say silly $#!T like: "This must be
your first step in your 'back to Africa' movement." I got so
discouraged I just gave up and when back to relaxers.
Now he's interested in what I'm doing to my hair. He likes that it
only takes me 10 minutes to prepare to go out. And, he loves how
soft it feels. He even sniffs my hair sometimes and tell me how good
it smells. What also helped me was the fact that his boss was a
natural woman. I guess she 'proved' you can be natural and still
move up in Corporate America. You're hubby will come around. He has
to go through a transition phase too.
Be encouraged and know that there is an entire community out here for
you.

Greetings Osocristie,
Your name is so unique, that I have to ask if you played on the TLC
show "R U The Girl"? There was someone who had a similar name (if not
the same) as yours.
Anyhoo, I'd like to reply to a few of your comments: I am sure even
going back to the days of slavery that light-skinned was usually
prefered. However, I am one of (I know others) those light-skinned
girls who ALWAYS wished that I was Darker. I think that dark
complexions are SO beautiful! I have a friend from Ghana who has such
beautiful, dark skin and I envy her! Mind you she told me that she
always wished that she was light-skinned. I honestly didn't FEEL
privileged having a lighter complexion. This convo actually reminds me
of School Daze - is that movie available anywhere because I've been
meaning to get it? It's easy to say that people usually wish that they
were (or atleast looked like) someone else. I believe that when people
don't conform to your ways/behavior then it's easy to question or be
critical such as permies do with people who have natural hair. Speaking
of hair, I think that black men who make such comical remarks on
natural hair are displaying a form of self-hatred that they have buried
within their subconscious.
As far as your friend asking you,"Why are you so dark, are your parents
that dark?" He sounds ignorant and immature. Why was it difficult for
him to get over your complexion?! He didn't have dark-skinned friends?
This sounds senseless.
I don't know which state that you're in, but even in NY are there mixed
couples Galore! I have nothing against race mixing and I have not dated
a white man, but if I met one who I was attracted to and was willing to
treat me like a queen then I am not going to turn away opportunity when
I see it because honestly speaking - black, white, hispanic, etc. -
it's hard to find a good, available man where you both have mutual
interests, period!

Storme~
I mix the foundation on my face. I apply the liquid foundation first
(to control oil )then the powder (to control oil even more). Also I
have been wanting to try CoverGirl Queen Collection by Queen Latifah,
but I have not been able to find it on the shelves. Any rich color I
will pick up even the at the "dollar store" :) I can experiment
without spending a lot of money. OH, another good brand is "wet
n'wild" it is inexpensive for everyday use & you can find deep colors
for our skin tone. I think about the make-up artist, they never use
just one product and they mix all that stuff up to fit all skin
shades.
P.S. If you purchase products in the summer, you may have to start
experimenting again the winter, because our skin changes so much. As
well as with age, times of the month (hormones) etc.. It is just
crazy! :)

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Instructions on CO washing

2008-06-11 11:37:44

What I usually do is I use a good moisturizing conditioner, so you're on the right track there. We all want our hair to be strong and healthy, so you can't go wrong with those either, in my opinion. Washing once works for me, but you may several washes may be effective for you. I just wet my hair very well and then put on a lot of conditioner. I work it in very well and leave it on my hair until i'm finished showering. When I rinse it out I rinse with cool water. I would say I do it just about every day if my hair is loose. If I don't conditioner wash, then I still rinse my hair in the shower with water because our hair loves water. If I have a style like box braids in my hair or two-strand twists, I usually just rinse with water and I probably conditioner wash once or twice a week to prevent major unraveling of the twists. If that's the case, then I only use a light layer of conditioner to wash the twists or box braids. As far as your question about shampooing
after being in the sun or exercising, I don't use shampoos anymore after I found out about the no-poo method. But, I did want to try a shampoo bar so I got one by Burt's Bees. They have a website, www.burtsbees.com, but I got mine from Whole Foods. I also like the bath soaps from www.kissmyface.com. They don't have any harsh detergents like regular shampoo. I have cut down my use of the shampoo bar though because I'm trying to get back to no-pooing only. But if I feel like I have a lot of build up I use the shampoo bar. I have yet to try clarifying my hair with the baking soda and water, but I do want to give it a try. I hope this helps. Ladies, feel free to add your experiences with no-pooing to help out also.

best wishes,

Kim

Hey all,
I've been trying to start the no poo method but I'm not sure how
well I'm doing so I figured I'd get some advice from the lovely ladies
out there who are on the no poo or lo poo method. One of my major
questions are what conditioners (brands and types) are best for no
pooing because I've just been using conditioners that I had around the
house but most of them say they are strengthening or moisturizing
conditioners. Is that alright? Also, how many times should I wash and
rinse? I know that the cleansers in conditioners are much milder than
those in shampoos but I didn't think I should be washing like 4 or 5
times to get my hair clean. I also was wondering how often y'all CO
wash a week and if you leave it on for a length of time before washing
it out. Oh, and since it's summer, after doing water activities and
exercising in the sun and such, do y'all break out the shampoo to
cleanse your hair? Sorry for all the questions but I've been trying to
get this thing for over a month now and I have no clue what I'm doing!

UNDOING LOCS without cutting them

Someone asked about the ability to undo locs without cutting them...was it someone here? If so, please check out this link about a mother who undid her daughter's locs.

Try Jason products. You can find them at the Vitamin Shoppe or other
stores that carry natural products.

Try the Soul Vegetarian complex. It is on Abernathy between West End
Mall and the new CVS. There is a hair salon/barbershop. There are
women and men that do braids, twists and locs. Sorry, I don't have
the phone number and can't recommend a specific stylist. My bf goes
there to get his locs done.

Re: WHAT WENT WRONG!

2008-06-10 13:12:01

Hey Nicole,
That's the same thing that happened to me while transitioning. I
had twists in for about 5 months, taking them out and retwisting every
so often. When I tried to finally take them all out and wash and
condition my head, girl, my beautiful naps were soft and glorious
while my permed ends were a matted mess right on top!! About an hour
into trying to detangle that stuff, I chopped every last bit of
straight hair out of my head and never looked back since! In the end,
I think that experience was good because my TWA helped me love and
appreciate my hair in its natural form. A similar thing also happened
to my friend when she was transitioning but she took the time to
detangle it all like you did. I think it has something to do with the
way you wash your hair; instead of scrubbing and moving it around, I
think you have to take care to make sure the straight hair isn't piled
on top of itself. Anyway, good luck and remember this is just a bump
on your wonderful road to being au naturel!! :)

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] WHAT WENT WRONG!

nicole_scott34,

What happened to those dead, relaxed ends is a sign that it's time to let them go. The whole point in going NATURAL is to release the UNNATURAL and move forward.

I know it's difficult for many of us to make the transition, but the faster you get rid of those UNNATURAL ends the faster you allow your own NATURAL, beautiful hair to shine through.

Peace

Instructions on CO washing

Hey all,
I've been trying to start the no poo method but I'm not sure how
well I'm doing so I figured I'd get some advice from the lovely ladies

New Member - Dalysharon

2008-06-09 06:36:56

What's your screen name? Dalysharon
City/State? Queens, New York City
Loose, loced, or transitioning? I wore locs for 7 1/2 years - now I
have a natural fro. Every time I see a sister with locs, I really miss
mine. Most of the time, I wear 2 strand twists. Sometimes I even use a
hot comb to straighten!
How long has your hair been like it is? My hair has been natural for
about 13 years.
How long is your hair? 7 inches
What are your 3 favorite products? I use mostly Aveda products on my
hair. I use their spray gel when I twist. Products by Carols Daughter
are also excellent.
What are your 3 favorite styles? 1. two strand twist, 2. Fro, 3.
Cornrows.
Do you style your hair at home, or go to a salon? Mostly at home. The
funny thing is, since going natural I love to do my hair myself. I go
to a salon when I want cornrows.
If you go to a salon, which one? Soweens in Brooklyn, NY or Tendrils in
Brooklyn, NY.
What is/has been your toughest hair struggle, physical or mental? I
never really had a personal struggle once I went natural because I felt
very comfortable and confident with going natural. I became a
Christian. My Lord and Savior loves me the way I am, so everyone else
can take it or leave it! Most of my struggles have been with black
folks who are not confident enough to go natural, so they try to put you
down. But trust me, I have no trouble standing up for myself. When I
first loced my hair, the law firm I worked for at the time didn't have a
problem with it. Now I work for an even bigger and more prestigious law
firm. On my job interview, I went to a salon and had my locs put up.
The interviewer even gave me good complements on my hair.
Are you natural for life? Why or why not? I am definitely natural for
life. Every once in awhile, I think about going back to perms, but then
I pinch myself and become sane again.
I'm glad I found this forum! I look forward to being part of the
Naturally You community.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Garnier Products

2008-06-09 04:50:09

I only use the products for the curly hair. I use the soft curl cream and the liquid gel. There is something else that I use but I am going to have to check the name when I get home. someone else recommended a leave in but the only one I have seen is the sleek and shine leave in, I dont think she ever responded as to whether or not that was the leave in that she used.

On 6/24/06, dimplesroberts <dimplesroberts@...

Okay, I've been doing some research because I'm considering trying the
Garnier products that everyone seems to love so much. They're very
affordable. However there are tons of gels and a few leave in
conditioners. For the Garnier lovers - Which gel and leave in
conditioner are you using?
thank you!

Great Fokti Album

Hey Kim (shortycocoa)

Just wanted to give you a shout out and let you know that your Fokti Album was great - I've GOT to update mine. I thought it was funny that we liked so much of the same music. I love rock, neo-soul and hip-hop with a rock edge, among other genres. My taste is always changing and I can't tell you how many smart remarks I've had over the years as a black person who loves all kinds of music.

I agree with you about being "in love with my hair like never before." What made me decide to go natural is that I was always fascinated with my new growth. I just loved the waviness and texture. Add to that the fact that I was tired of my scalp being on fire everytime I got a relaxer and the merry-go-round of great growth, then sudden breakage.

I've been natural for a year now and I couldn't be happier with my hair.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] nappy and colorful

2008-06-08 10:13:33

Many times white people can't seem to see the difference in our various skin colors, unless it's extremely obvious, such as a very dark-brown black person and a very pale-skinned black person. I have to admit I can't see the difference in the shades of white redheads, blonds, or brunettes--maybe if they are standing right next to each other. When I hear a white person referring to another white person as 'dark', I don't see it-LOL

And also, for a long time there has been a hierarchy among our people with our 'shade' of blackness. In high school, I had a friend of Haitian descent who told me that there was a whole 'color code'--descriptions of people based on their skin color. That reminded me of that old 'brown paper bag' stuff that happened in the US.

It seems like when the baby is born, the first thing we notice is their color, and whether their color will change, and when. And for that matter, hair too!

We are all beautiful BECAUSE of our different ranges of skin shades and hair textures, not despite of them.

Tobi
kagome523 <kagome523@...

we think negatively of ourselves, our body, our hair, just
everything. We come in many different colors, and really don't know
if we truly are beautiful as a whole when we are all different.
That's different for white people, well there are some that are pale.
I don't think of my hair as nappy or anything, just hair that i was
born with and that i now have control of. I just wish it would grow
out more cause i look better with long hair around my face.
I don't usually talk hair or skin color with my white friends. I
told this guy that I had gotten darker from the sun(he was talking
about getting sunburned when he went to the beach)and he just
laughed. That bothered me because it's the truth and he just didn't
seem to care to see that my hands were darker than my arms.

What product is best to use on my hair?

2008-06-08 03:35:31

Hi! It's almost been a year since I've gone natural and I'm proud of
it. But every shampoo/conditioner I get either works for a while or
doesn't work at all. My hair is very course. Ive been using the
pantene pro V for relaxed and natural hair in my hair when I first cut
it all off. I have to say it grew well, but, I'm looking for something
new. I'm currently using Joi products and their not working too well.
I bought some Joi detangler but it made my hair more tangled and
flattened. What type of products do you suggest?

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Meriyama

2008-06-07 22:36:53

Hi Meriyama and welcome to the group--

You may want to simply keep your hair moisturized (you'll find loads of ideas for products in this group!), and wear it in protective styles such as a bun or one long braid. The no-poo method (shampooing with conditioner instead of shampoo) will be less drying to your hair, and then keeping it moist with a leave-in conditioner and/or oil/water/essential oil mix.

If you were able to maintain a length of 24-30 inches with relaxed hair, imagine how thick and healthy your hair will be all-natural!

have about an inch of new growth because I have just decided to go
natural a few weeks ago. I have been trying to grow my hair long for
6 years so I have about 24-30 inches of relaxed hair. I like to make
my own hair products but I do like Aphogee protein deep conditioner,
I also use shea butter, avocado oil, and glycerin. My favorite
styles are box braids (because that's the only way I know how to
braid and ponytails. I am a hairstylist so I don't go to salons.
Occasionally I will go to get cornrows and I go to Rainier Beauty
Supply. My toughest hair struggle is having no patience I want a
foot of natural hair now so that I can atleast wear it in a pony
tail. My hair is breaking off like crazy because I am transitioning
but I refuse to cut it off because of fear of losing my ponytail.
Six years ago due to overprocessing (perm and bleach) my hair was
breaking of so I cut it into a 3 inch fro. It lasted to 6 months
then I went back to relaxers because I didn't want to deal with it.
I told myself if I put a mild perm it won't damage it. I don't know
if I will be natual for life but I do know at this point that even
with using a mild perm my hair was damaged. I am very happy to join
this group and get encouragement and advice from you all. I know

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Update!!

2008-06-05 18:22:56

Lynee,

go shorty! it's your birthday! go shorty! it's your birthday! I have a few comments...I loved those twists but it's a shame the stylist did them too tight even after you told her so. You might want to put your foot down in the future. But your transitioning seems to be coming along nicely...don't give up!!!! You are very beautiful and that smile is gorgeous. As far as what styles you can do with your new growth, I don't see anything wrong with doing spirals if you still want to rock that and it's a style you're comfortable with doing. When I was on the fence and transitioning myself, I used to do braid outs a lot because it was the quickest style. I know some of the captions in my fotki say it's a twist out, but twists never stayed in my hair so i would just braid my hair all over, and roll the braids on the really really small perm rods and then take them out and unbraid my hair in the morning. But when I wanted to switch it up I would still roller set my hair or
I would just pull it up into a bun on top of my head if it got too hot for it to be down. I got to a point when the relaxed hair was just getting on my nerves and I wanted it gone, so I would put a headband or bandana on after doing the braid out to smooth the edges and then just pull it up. I noticed in some of your pictures you said you didn't like sitting under the dryer because it was too hot. I had that same issue after a while with my hair, and I stopped. So one day I tried just washing, conditioning, and moisturizing my scalp and hair really well and then roller setting. I would just let my hair air dry overnight with a bonnet on and depending on when I set it, all of my hair would be dry and the curls would be fierce and in tact as though I sat under a hot hooded dryer for several hours. So now my dryer is in my closet collecting dust...partly because I don't have a need for it anymore since i'm all natural and partly because when I still "needed" it, I
discovered I didn't really need it when i realized I could roller set without it. (does that make sense???) anyways, you should give it a try. I keep feeling like I'm forgetting what else I wanted to tell you. Oh, I added you to my friends list...I hope that's okay. You can check out my fotki too to see the pictures if you want. I've been natural for six months now.

best wishes,

kim
Hello everyone!!! I updated my fotki page and I finally took out my twists so check out my fotki page if you get a chance. www.fotki.com/cutecurlycurvy

Of I have a question... Now that I've taken my twists out and I have about four months of new growth what styles can I do?? Can I still do spiral curls?
