Welcome to the group. I'm from the Philadelphia area too. I haven't lived ther in over 10 years though. Anyway, where is Au Naturale? My sister lives in West Philly and she wears her hair natural too. My mom lives in Montgomery County but she'll go to Philly to get her hair done. They would find it amusing that I'm suggesting a hair salon for them in Philly when I live in New Orleans.

Peace all.

After reading Lina's response I decided to do what I have been putting off for months now...throwing out all of my old chemicalized hair and beauty products. I did it last night. It was not as hard as I thought. I expected to be upset and a little afraid of going 'totally' natural...but I wasn't. [INLINE]

Since the beginning of February the only products I use on my hair (body and face too)are pure 100% natural African Black soap (the real ugly kind that needs to be shaved...but dang it if it doesn't smell wonderful!), Lily of the Desert aloe vera gel, and pure shea butter. I committed myself to using products that are all natural and that I can use all over my body. I was truly alarmed when I paid attention to all the chemicals I was using everyday! Over 20 unrecognizable chemicals in my body wash, shampoo, conditioner, facial wash, facial astringent and moisturizer, hair oil, hair gel or setting lotions, body lotion and then even my body powder!!! The list does go on...Wow!!! And God only knows what those chemicals were doing to my body! [INLINE]

But anyway...the chems are gone!!! My hair is healthy, lovely, and free! A friend twisted my hair two weeks ago, and she was so inspired by my hair's natural shine! She just recently cut her hair too, and swears that the black soap and aloe vera gel concotion I use is what has given her such amazing hair growth! She's grown 3.5 inches of hair in two months!!! [INLINE] And she's 40! [INLINE] How about quelling that rumor that your hair slows it's growth after 30?!?!

Also, it's like as soon as you start to take better care of your hair, the rest of you begs for au naturale attention as well! I can oblige! I, like Lina, am starting a vegan diet. I am down to eating meat only twice a week now Lina!!! WHOO HOO!!! We're on our way!!! [INLINE] And I just started a walking regimen to help my young body stay healthy. Where does the self lovin' stop? [INLINE]

Stay natural!

Be well!

I think that many people are now realizing that the scalp and the follicles are the fertile ground needed to grow healthy hair. I noticed that when I rinse my hair more often, my scalp stays "residue-free" and this seems to help my hair "breathe" and thus grow. I think that hair buildup was my issue and when I did a weekly rinse with water or a conditioner wash, that helped quite a bit. I am seeing even better health in my gums and nails since I started taking vitamins and I only have one meat meal per day (transitioning to vegan), thus eating way more veggies than previously. Diet is a big deal, and so is stress. Hair responds to both, and stress is particularly fast-acting and damaging to my hair. I also try to use 80% natural products or I make them myself from natural oils. Along with the vitamins (B vitamins especially!) I am using more pure jojoba oil on my hair and scalp and that has been wonderful. Scalp massages and exercises also help increase circulation.
Positive thoughts and images of healthy hair are always good too. Along with my vitamins, I take an amino acid supplement with meals that have no meat, just to ensure my meal has all the building blocks needed.
Hope that helps. Take some pics - you may just think its not growing, but you could be mistaken.....

Hi Kenya--

Thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like your hair is beautiful--please post photos!

Tobi
Kenya Ramey <afrosoulicious@...

Peace,
Okay so I have finally done it. I went to get my
hair done. I mean DID! My stylist hooked me up.
Thanks to one of those hot March Friday
afternoons, as a college student I was extremely
bored so I decided to browse around and discover
the antique shops and coffee shops in the local
downtown area. The adventure was one of a
lifetime. But, the most amazing thing occurred. I
begin to walk past a beautiful African American
salon and everyone is in the window waving and
making gestures to me. Me being the blunt and
sometimes overly snappy person that I am; I waved
and brushed them off without even realizing what
they were saying to me. However, I walked past the
salon and realized that the individuals where
complimenting me on my hair. I said thank you.
Thought about it, went into that salon and asked
for a natural stylist. Little did I know, a sistah
from DC was the one in the window that would love
to do my hair. Talk about the hook-up. I dont
have to travel 30 minutes to another salon to get
my hair treated. I soon became aware that one of
my girlfriends that style her natural hair
beautifully goes to my new natural stylist. One
month later, I go in to get a style (my big curly
fro was cut into various layers) and color (copper
like a penny). I am in LOVE! I feel like this has
been the icing on the cake for a chapter in my
life that I am getting ready to close. I am still
evolving in my Evolution, however I am coming
closer and closer to what I desire. Like India
says, I am not my hair! My mind makes who I am. If
anyone knows my natural story, I have been natural
for my entire life except two years in high school
when I decided to conform to the Europeanized
beauty. I soon realized that didnt work for me
and went back to wearing my natural hair blow
dried. Four years ago, I decided to wear my
natural texture in its complete natural form with
no heat as an everyday style. I began my
evolution. It took a good four years for me to get
to a real stylist that could help a sistah out. As
I decide to take the next step within my life, I
applaud coming to terms with who I am as an
African American woman with a beautiful Natural.
Just wanted to share some thoughts and
inspiration. Keep the Faith and stay Blessed!

Natural in Dutchess County, New York

2008-01-30 01:09:08

Hi everyone,

Can anyone recommend a salon or person that caters to natural hair in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York? I know this is asking a lot ;) , but I figured, "what the heck, it can't hurt to ask!"

I've been seeing the same person for the last few years, and although I think she is quite talented, I feel as if we have come to the end of our journey together since I have been natural (2 years now). She has said (not very nicely) that natural hair is just "a fad" and I just don't feel we are on the same wavelength anymore.

I have begun making my own shampoos, conditioners, etc., and although I can twist my hair I cannot braid. Anyway, I would like to meet someone that knows more than I do about the care of my hair and experiment with different styles, poss locs, and the trimming and overall maintenance of my natural hair.

Sorry this is so long, any help would be much appreciated!

Hair Wars

Is the Hampton School of Business hair code, which bans certain Afro-centric styles, a case of training conformists or a realistic attempt to prepare students for the business world?

Now Susan L. Taylor, editorial director of Essence magazine, emphasizes how seriously some black women take the issue of hair.

Taylor, the longstanding face of the nation's leading magazine for black women, backed out of a speaking engagement at Hampton University, Essence confirmed, after learning that "braids, dreadlocks and other unusual hairstyles are not acceptable" for majors in a five-year master's of business administration program at the university.

"The freedom to wear our hair in ways that celebrate our heritage is one of our 'rites of passage.' Students would benefit from learning how to care for and groom locks and braids and wear them in ways that are appropriate in a business setting," Taylor wrote on March 28.

Taylor said she recommended that Dr. William R. Harvey, the university president, "reconsider this policy and invite informed image consultants to address students in your business program about how to make individual style work in the corporate environment. Perhaps the greatest challenge . . . students will face in the work world is remaining whole and true to themselves in environments that are often hostile to African-Americans. Staying connected to our community and culture is critical. Trying to transform themselves to fit into hardly welcoming environments has scarred countless numbers of Black people," she said.

Advice/info. re aloe vera juice

2008-01-27 17:23:23

Good morning all.

I've decided to try using aloe vera juice instead of water to spritz my natural hair. Water seems to "dry" my hair when I use it to spritz.

I could only find a 1 gallon jug of aloe vera juice at Walmart ('Fruit of the Earth'). Once opened, does anyone know how long this last? Does anyone use aloe vera juice for any other purpose than spritzing, i.e. drinking? What are the benefits? Can I buy a smaller quantity?

Also, does anyone have a favourite spritzing "recipe" that includes aloe vera juice?

Looking forward to your responses,

conditiner/water/oil....My daughter had a bad scalp during winter and
summer and could figure out why...I decided to stop shampooing and
just use conditoner to was...I also started using the spritz and it
has done wonders for her hair...the scalp has healed...no more dryness
or flakes and her hair looks and feels healthy...so try the no poo and
spritz...the spritz is 3oz distilled water...1oz light conditioner
(suave Lavender or aloe)...1/2oz of a light oil (sweet almond oil or
coconut oil)...5 drops of lavender eo...mix together in an 8oz spray
bottle and spray daily or nightly....HTH and let me know how it works

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] When will twist loc???

2008-01-25 19:45:25

It depends on the texture of your hair--hair with tighter curls and more thickness will loc faster. A few years ago, I had my hair braided. After three months, I decided to take my hair down and discovered that some of it had started to loc--at that time I wasn't ready for locs. I didn't realize my hair would loc if the braids weren't taken out in a timely manner.

Later I got my hair loced by getting my hair put into two-strand twists while I let the new growth loc.

----- Original Question -----

Fw: somebody please explain

2008-01-25 00:01:28

For the newbies that may be wondering..

Here's my two cents.
You can do them all - depends on the health of the hair
1) moisturizing is most frequent - with oils, water, or mixture of both.. Daily upkeep of hair's natural moisture and lubrication, protection from elements, and manageability are important, whether the hair is manipulated or not.
2) conditioners - usually done with or without a shampoo (called no-poo if conditioner is used to wash the hair). Some people do this anywhere from once a week or two to daily. If your hair tends to be dry this is a good treatment, but over time build-up can result, so perhaps do a rinse with diluted ACV, baking soda, or diluted lemon juice to remove buildup (these rinses are also a nice alternative to shampoo) before conditioning.
3) hot oil treatments - are usually done before shampooing - have a conditioning effect and help moisturize the hair before shampooing - it also keeps the shampoo from stripping the hair, and also loosens the dirt and buildup from the hair. Some people use this as a deep condition for the hair, leaving it on for 10 min to an hour - can also help detangle the hair from previous styles.
4) deep conditioners - are usually done after shampooing ; may contain little to substantial amounts of protein or fatty ingredients to strengthen and condition the hair. heat (trapped heat or dryer heat) may be applied to keep the cuticle swollen so the active ingredients can seep into the hair. Rinsed well with warm water and conditioner or herbal rinse applied - to soften the cuticle (protein can make the hair hard and brittle). Cold water after a conditioner helps close the cuticle and make hair more manageability. If your hair snaps while combing or styling, or seems to shed more than usual, this may need to be stepped up a bit.
I don't have all the answers, but these are the methods I use to figure out what my hair needs from week to week.
Hope that helps!

Re: Natural Newbie Advice

2008-01-24 23:44:29

My regimen is low poo and low oil. I wash with shampoo about once
every 1-2 weeks and with conditioner about 1-2 per week. I keep my
hair moisturized with light butters, water, and a daily spritz. I
clarify my hair about once every 1-2 months. I have a longer
description of my regimen and the products I use on my blog:
blogs.space-pirates.org/beyondlocs
My favorite shampoos are Oyin's Grand Poo Bar and Avalon Organics
Lemon Verbena Clarifying Shampoo.
My favorite conditioners are Oyin's Honey Hemp Conditioner, Suave
Two Minute Deep Recovery, Suave Milk and Honey, Suave Awapuhi, and
Dove's Intense Moisturizing Conditioner.
I trim whenever my ends feel rough and start knotting very easily,
which is usually about evey 3-4 months depending on the weather and
what styles I have been wearing (afros tend to be a little harder on
my ends than braids and twists).
I've kept my hair at that length for a while, I just decided to let
it grow out some. I like to wear two strand twists and box braids.
This week, I have been wearing a particularly fierce set of palm
coils. Occasionally, I wear my hair out in an afro with a headband,
but the summer heat is really hard on my hair, so I probably won't
go back to that until the fall. I've also seen some cute styles with
cornrows or flat twists in the front and twists or coils in the
back. And I always have my reliable headwrap when I don't feel like
messing with my hair at all.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] What is good for Dry/ Flaky Scalp

I will never use anything on my scalp but jojoba oil. on a daily basis, I also spritz with essential oils like lang lang, sage, and pepperment...one part eo and 3 parts water. I think the key to a lubricated scalp is moisture (water). I also shampoo once a week. If you are at that point and your locs are mature the steam from your shower really helps.

Hi Tammy,
I'm Sarah in KY. My husband & I adopted a multi-ethnic daughter three
years ago. My husband & I are white, our daughter is
hispanic/black/white. Have to admit there has been a learning curve
with her hair since we don't have family members who can help
although
several co-workers have given me good (& not so good) tips about
caring for her hair.
A couple of good resources I found were "It's All Good Hair" by
Michele Collison & "Her Special Hair" by Cherie King. Collison's book
is available at Amazon & bookstores. She shows a lot of pretty styles

Kiddie Perms

2008-01-23 18:02:56

There was an article in Thursday's Tampa Tribune paper in
the "Baylife" section...www.TBO.com. It's speaking about a little
girl whom has "beautiful hair" (perm) and has won a modeling contract
with Pro-Line International. It's a shame that her mother groomed her
to believe that she has beautiful hair because of perms, and of course
the marketing field is useing that for a marketing tool for "kiddie
perms"!!!!! Maybe what needs to be done is to market natural hair for
children, as they have market perms for children. We need to instill
that they are beautiful with their natural selfs!! Alot of us are
so "far gone" with this perms and chemicals, that we apply it to our
children's hair and they believe that it's needed to be beautiful.
I saw this article, and thought what a shame....

Just wanted to define that the word "grease" is used to denote products with petroleum and orginally was used when talking about cars - "axel grease" or complex machinery (greasing gears) - mainly for lubrication. WE have basically adopted the word and companies have marketed it towards "lubrication of the scalp" and supposedly making hair easier to manage, but petroleum is merely a coating and it is assumed that everything is in good shape before the "grease" is applied (to cars, gears, and other machinery).
Unfortunately, this grease is not applicable to most people's hair health. Natural food-grade oils like olive, almond, grapeseed, sesame, avocado are nutritionally better for the hair and do the same thing that grease does.. but to each his own. make sure that your "grease" has natural ingredients and very low to no amounts of mineral oil, paraffin oil, and petroleum. Lanolin (oil from sheepskin and wool) can also be clogging to some people's skin and scalp.

Hey I'm New!!!!

2008-01-22 03:55:40

What's your screen name? Cutencurvy723 or lynee22 (aol)
City/State? VA
Loose, loced, or transitioning? transitioning ( last perm 3/4)
How long has your hair been like it is? I have straw curls right
now... so 2 days
How long is your hair? below shoulders :)
What are your 3 favorite products? Design Essentials, and Paul
mitchell products. I like to try new things.
What are your 3 favorite styles? Well I'm trying to transition...
but Roller wrap, spiral curls, straw set with twists.
Do you style your hair at home, or go to a salon? mostly at home and
salon when I find time
If you go to a salon, which one? Blessings
What is/has been your toughest hair struggle, physical or mental?
Finding a nice hairstyle with easy upkeep for exercise.
Are you natural for life? probably
Why or why not? I have a strong desire to go natural but I'm
leaving my options open
Please include a link to your website or online hair album. I don't
have an albumn yet... but I am going to make one.
* Hello, I have been thinking about going natural for a very long
time. I am a 20 years old, junior in college. My natural hair (as
remembered and desribed by mom,)is soft and curly seems like type 4a
or something. I had waist length natural hair (pressed) when I was
in elementary school. I begged my mom for a perm... and she refused.
Finally my grandmother let me get a relaxer and the cycle began. I
enjoy my relaxed hair but I have always had a desire to get my
natural hair back. I enjoyed my hair texture and my hair was fairly
managable. It could be easily blow-dried straight. But I just wanted
to be like my older sister. I know my mom was in charge of hair
then... so i'm sure it will be more difficult now. I am very excited
about growing my natural hair. My boyfriend isn't really that
excited. My mom doesn't think I really want my hair natural, but she
says she supports me :) Oh and my beautician said she would not do
my hair if I went natural.
1. Is there a way I can transition without doing the BC? I know I
need to trim my ends regularly, but it seems that most people wait 3-
6 months and then cut.
2. Are braids really that damaging? I usually get braids during the
summer so I can work out more, without worrying about my hair.
3. Can you still go to salon to get hair done and how do you find a
beautician who will take care of natural hair?
* sorry it's so long but I'm very excited... and I have lots of
questions :)

Hello,

I also am new to the natural look. I don't think you will be do for a cut until 4 months from this point, you don't have to always have a cut if you take care of your hair. I have curly but kinky hair so I use products that help maintain that look if I am not getting it straightened. I forgot the name of the line I use I will get back to you on that. I do use products from Pink Lustres line though. OK have a great day and enjoy your hair.

Hello,

I am still pretty new to the Natural lifestyle, though I must admit I am absolutely LOVING IT. I have finally fallen into a sort of rhythm, it seems. I have been braiding my hair in cornrows each night and then loosening them when I go out. I love the look. At this point I am really happy with my length, etc. and want to keep my hair growing so I have a few questions:

Ø What are your favorite hair care products, regimens, etc. to keep the hair as healthy as possible?

o Favorite shampoos & conditioners:
o Favorite daily products:

Ø How often should I be getting my hair cut? I havent had a hair cut since the BIG CUT 6 months ago.

Ø Other suggested hair-styles for 5 or 6 inches of hair.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

RE: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Val and Nadine...

2008-01-20 01:46:26

I just saw yesterday's Val and Nadine post (after I caught up with a months worth of strips, I decided to make it a part of my routine to read it everyday--it's inspiring!).

A friend of mine is doing the same thing--wearing a 'kinky weave'. I'm not certain if she is doing it to attract men, but it so happens that last week, I told her about the strip and about the one strip where Nadine felt that Val was able to go natural because she already had a man--my friend responded by saying, "She really does have a point there!"

However, I have told her that natural hair really does attract attention--its not always negative attention and that if I wasn't in a relationship, I don't think I would have a problem meeting a mate because my hair is loced. Of course men have their preferences--a guy who finds relaxed and straight hair more attractive than natural may not be interested in a woman with natural/loced hair.

Unfortunately we do know that sometimes women do feel that they have to look a certain way (hair, weight, height, color, etc.) to attract a mate.

I think by embracing our natural hair, we will also start to embrace our other God-given characteristics as well.

Re: Alopecia

2008-01-19 14:10:18

Nia, if you're referring to traction alopecia which is hair being
removed from the roots due to tight braiding, pulling, etc, then the
replies have pretty much covered it. I've gotten some great advice
concerning that from here before. One was to blend 5 drops of
rosemary oil with 2 drops of peppermint oil and about 7 drops of
grapeseed or jojoba oil and massage the spot for sometime twice a
day. Also, ORS has a natural hair serum for this problem. I've been
also told to massage into the scalp and hair coconut milk or Aloe
Vera gel. Leave it for ½ hour, then rinse with warm water. Repeat 3
times a week. There are some great websites with info. on the issue
including http://motowngirl.com, http://www.brownskin.net,
naani.com, nappturality.com. Most dermatologists who are familiar
with skin of color charge reasonable prices for treatments (laser,
hair growth lotions, etc) ranging from $110 in the DC area where I
live. I've been using the rosemary/peppermint mix, and the ORS but
very infrequently. I think with time and patience the hair grows
back. Good luck.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] What is ALOPECIA?????

2008-01-19 04:55:44

www.dictionary.com

alopecia

n : loss of hair (especially on the head) or loss of wool or feathers; in humans it can result from heredity or hormonal imbalance or certain diseases or drugs and treatments (chemotherapy for cancer)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alopecia

Alopecia, commonly known as baldness, is a set of disorders which involves the state of lacking hair where it would normally grow, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair-thinning condition that occurs in adult humans and other primate species. Nonetheless, the severity and nature of condition can vary greatly; it ranges from male and female pattern alopecia (alopecia androgenetica), to alopecia areata, which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of all head hair, to the most extreme form, alopecia universalis, which involves the loss of all hair from the head and the body. Treatment for alopecia has limited success. The more hair lost, the less successful the treatment will be. The psychological implications of alopecia include stress, anxiety and depression, and can in many cases involve issues relating to identity change, particularly when the eyebrows and eyelashes are also
lost. Hair loss is sometimes the result of chemotherapy treatment for cancer sufferers.

Re: What is ALOPECIA?????

2008-01-19 00:19:13

Hi Angela,
Alopecia is basically an autoimmune skin disease resulting in hair
loss on the scalp and other parts of the body where hair is present.
It can occur on a man's beard, a person's eyebrow area and can also
occur on the scalp.
The cause of the hair loss is the affected hair follicles are
mistakenly attacked by a person's own immune system (white blood
cells). You can find a good definition of it at
http://www.curlyhairsalon.com/alopecia.html.
And for Nia there is hope. A friend of mine had alopecia. She
initially had permed hair, then wore braids for quite some time. This
is when it developed. The doctors were not sure if it was the long
wearing of braids but believed it was an "imbalance" in the body they
said. Initially she got some needles in her scalp (not sure what that
was) but it was supposed to promote hair growth. Note that she only
got this after the bald spots spread wider and in more areas of her
head. Then they told her also to take some apple cider vinegar mixed
in apple juice. Not sure if this or all of these things caused her
hair growth but she pretty much has a full head of hair now after
being almost completely bald. Just one area the hair is a bit finer
but she now has a full head of hair. It's hard to notice she was ever
bald at all.
It can be very difficult and I do feel for you. Yes, black women and
hair is a big issue. But hang in there. I'd get several opinions if I
were you. Definately check out a herbalist or chinese doctor. They
usually have lots of natural remedies. You should also check out a
support group at www.AlopeciaAreata.com.
I wish you all the best! Don't stop asking questions. You're sure to
get some answers. Hang in there girl! Don't make this experience break
your spirit. Try to take care of it now ... the sooner the better.
Good luck!

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Alopecia--Rachele

2008-01-18 17:30:59

I had been relaxing my hair for about 20 years before I went natural 3 years ago. The hair loss was mostly at the top--the hair on the crown of my head was much shorter, thinner and coarser than the rest of my hair.

My hair is about shoulder-length (loced) now and the 'trouble spot' has grown nicely.

I think you are doing everything you can to ensure healthy hair growth and will really see a difference soon.

advice for hair/scalp odor

2008-01-16 06:46:08

my scalp sweats alot and if i don't wash it once a wk then i am stuck
with really bad odor (usually starts smelling towards the end of the
wk)
I am going to start a rigorous work out schedule 3x's a wk and am
worried about the hair odor that will come with that (i only go to the
hair dresser once a wk. i have really thin hair and dry scalp and dont
think i should wash my hair twice a wk)
does anyone have any ideas about how to control that odor until the
end of the wk? i have friends who wash thier hair once every two wks
and thier hair smells of "roses".

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] advice for hair/scalp odor--ask Lina

2008-01-16 06:15:02

How long have you had the odor problem? You may want to make sure you don't have a scalp infection.

You may want to try spraying in a mixture of light oil (like sweet almond), water and an essential oil like peppermint or lavender (just a few drops in the mixture) on your scalp after working out.

Lina is one of our 'experts'--I'm sure she would have great advice.

Hot Comb not Easter Eggs Strongest Childhood Memory for Black Women on Easterreleased on 04/14/06 at 08:50:38
When the comb turned red, it was time.
Part. Grease. Slide the comb. Part. Grease. Slide the comb. A hair boogie of sorts, transforming woolly clumps, wiry spindles and rough waves into black satin.
One misstep, and an ear or forehead was burned.
For black women, it's not colorful eggs that bring back childhood memories of Easters gone by.
It's an arduous appointment with a 300-degree makeover: the hot comb.
For years, the metal, handheld comb has been used to straighten black hair, which is often coarse and curly in its natural state. A good pressing lasts about a week.
These days, more and more black women turn to chemicals to straighten their hair, if they straighten at all. But this time of year, as scores flock to the salon in preparation for Easter Sunday, memories of the antiquated hair ritual come back vividly, like azaleas in April. Full Article

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] SUSAN L. TAYLOR PROTESTS HAMPTON'S HAIR POLIC...

2008-01-15 15:08:51

Yes it is sad. We have a local talk show personality in Detroit who criticizes people with natural hairstyles as if they are commiting a criminal act when wearing natural, braided or loc'd hair. She has certainly stated her agreement of Hampton's policy. She once told her cohost that she was shocked he would consider dating a sister with locs. In her opinion, you must keep it straight, whatever the damage to hair (AND BRAIN). I have seen her in public incognito sans the weave, and the edges of her hair were SEVERELY damaged and bald. Unfortunately, she gets to promote this self-hatred. Sad. Sad. Sad.
Additionally, wearing straight hair to appease caucasians will never work for long. If you are not wanted, they will eventualy find an issue to justify demoting you, failing to advance you or fire you; AND you will have lost youself in the process. It's like trying to be ultra careful not to offend an abusive mate so you won't be beat. Nothing you do is going to stop it short of leaving.
I advocate being competent, meticulously groomed, professional, courteous, etc. If that is not sufficient, I don't want to work there (no Dr. Miracle, nose job, bleaching cream, color contacts for me). IF YOU CAN, choose a career you love where this is a high demand to minimize these experiences.
Let us pray and write letters of protest!

2008-01-15 02:06:18

WHen I wear braid extensions I just create two or four large braids (loose at the base) and rubber band the ends, then I wash my hair with a diluted shampoo (1 part shampoo to 3 parts water). I let the water run through them and massage the scalp well, squeezing the shampoo thru the length of each braid. I wrap my hair in one of hubby's old t-shirts and let the water drain out. then I apply a braid spray that I have mixed with some essential oils and infusium 23 ( a leave-in protein conditioner) into the scalp and hair. then I put on a scarf and let the ends drip dry on hubby old t-shirt, sometimes I wrap the ends of the braids into a ponytail bun and then wrap some fabric around that and let it air/drip dry.

Hope that helps!

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] survey - adoption

2008-01-12 10:15:20

Your answer is what I thought. I am biracial. My father is white and mother is black. Please do not get the wrong impression about me asking, but I was curious since you mentioned adopting and I figure you would have the facts since you are going through process. I really appreciate your honesty and good luck. [INLINE]
Tammy Campbell <tammyandjohn@...

My husband and I are Caucasian. Healthy caucasian infants are not readily available. Babies with health problems are somewhat more available. I have people tell me that Austin is "lucky" that John and I would adopt a baby who was drug exposed. We are the lucky ones, he is a wonderful child.

The state of Virginia has ancient adoption laws that cause all adoptions done in VA courts to drag on forever. I hope we can finalize the next adoption in a different state.

I hate to admit it, but I believe that an African American couple would find it very difficult to adopt a Caucasian child. There would be many people throwing up silent roadblocks because of their views on race. Not many people would say it out loud, at least not in the presence of the couple, but many would completely disapprove of the adoption.

To Perm or not Perm

2008-01-12 08:13:49

Hello,

I wanted to forward this article I read about natural hair styles in corporate america called "To Perm or Not to Perm" See link below

For me personally prior to going natural, have always felt compelled to wear my hair permed because I felt that natual hair wasn't professional for corporate america. I was too concerned about what people would think and though it would affect my promotions or move up the corporate ladder.

My opinion of that of since changed and I've been natural for almost 2 years. I love my huge natural fro and I'm so glad that people are now starting to embrace who they are rather than sticking to an old sterotypes that have been past down through generations. I still get comments from my relatives about my hair but I respect them for their opinion because I feel they have "old skool" thinking. I wear my hair twisted, twist out, flat twists or just loose and going in the wind. I love the different looks and styles that natural hair can do. Plus my hair hasn't been this healthy in years :-) Despite our differences, I don't feel hair should really define who I am at work/home or with my friends. It's just a personal choice to me.

Enjoy!

RE: [Naturally You! eCommunity] To Perm or not Perm

2008-01-12 04:29:30

I regressed for a few months and got a perm. I was not happy at all. I caved into the pressure of the office and the looks that I was receiving. I decided yesterday to cut my hair again and I am happy. It all came to the surface when I received my Naturally you magazine. When I say all the sistahs sporting their natural crowns, I was so envious because mine was gone. I got off of work and went straight to the barber. Everyone was looking at me like what is wrong with her! I am feeling like myself.

Hi,

My name is Cynthia. I'm glad to be apart of this community.

What's your screen name? JCWebb2001

City/State? New City, NY

Loose, loced, or transitioning? Loced

How long has your hair been like it is? 5 Years

How long is your hair? Shoulder blade length

What are your 3 favorite products?

What are your 3 favorite styles? Shirley temple curles, freestyle, and curls

Do you style your hair at home, or go to a salon? Home

If you go to a salon, which one?

What is/has been your toughest hair struggle, physical or mental? None

Are you natural for life? Why or why not? Yes. With the exception of coloring my hair, I have no desire to change the texture any longer. My scalp is too sensitive for relaxers, and after years of burning I said enough is enough.

I am a caucasian woman. My husband and I have applied to adopt an African American or multiracial daughter. We expect to receive our daughter in the next 3-4 months. I started reading about African American culture, racism, parenting children of color, etc. I was really surprised to read about "bad" hair. I thought that surely the concern was overstated. I asked an African American friend about hair care. The first words out of her mouth were "You better hope that you don't get a child with that bad hair." I could not believe that there was actually hair that was called bad hair. There is no Caucasian hair type that is considered bad. No one would tell a Caucasian child that she had bad hair. Even when I dyed my hair blue no one called it bad (but it was bad! really bad!).
I have always thought that braids and locs are striking and beautiful. I want my daughter to think that she is beautiful and that her hair (regardless of texture) is beautiful. I want to learn to care for her hair so that it always looks nice. I don't want her to feel ugly because I did something stupid to her hair. So, I'm here to learn.

Hello to All!!

those who call certain hair types "bad". I could not imagine saying that
any child's hair was "bad". I am glad that you are here to learn the best
way to care for your daughter's hair.

Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] Synthetic Hair Question--Shampoo Cap

2008-01-10 03:51:17

Hi-

There was a post recently about a shampoo cap that allows you to wash locs--maybe that will work for braids as well. The shampoo cap can be found at Sally's Beauty Supply. I think it's called the Twists and Dreads Shampoo Cap.

I plan on buying a couple for myself and my son for our locs.

Natural Hair Salons in Atlanta area???

Does anyone know of any salons in the Atlanta area that cater
specifically to natural, unprocessed, textured hair? (less focus on
relaxers, weaves, hair extensions, texturizers, etc. - only interested
in care for natural hair, i.e. styles, products, etc.)
