Re: [Naturally You! eCommunity] washing hair

2007-10-31 14:41:59

Washing with conditioner (no poo-ing) is very logical and just as beneficial as washing with shampoo. I believe that the bottom line is finding products that are healthy and have natural ingredients without harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients whether one uses shampoo or not. My question is for people who do use shampoo and deep condition their hair in the same day: do you jump in the shower - shampoo - rinse out - deep condition - jump out the shower and then jump in the shower to rinse out again?! I, myself found this to be quite tedious (whether I washed in the shower or sink) So, I just eliminate the unneccessity of shampooing because deep conditioning (without shampoo) removes the build-up while cutting corners and saving time to get the job done - which is what we want overall - to get our hair and scalp cleansed.

Hello Ladies. I keep hearing/reading about people washing their hair without shampoo or using conditioner to wash their hair. How does that work? Isn't that like showering without soap or using lotion to wash your skin? Does it work? Does it remove build-up? I'm very curious about this. I've conditioned my hair without washing it before. I did that when I had a relaxer sometimes, especially after swimming, but it was just to hold me over until I could wash it. Has anyone tried it and disliked it? All helpful ideas/responses are welcome and greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tamara, yes, depending upon where you live makes a difference in acceptance of natural hair. My hair style is more accepted by East Coast peeps than the Midwest peeps (where I live). My brother says it would be kool to sport natural in California, where anything goes. He says men are wearing culottes, now how is my natural hair going to be a problem there?. The Midwest is behind in acceptance of natural black beauty and urban clothin, and black people just being free. We ain't free. My Southern Belle Louisiana mama made a comment last week that no one is going to hire me with my hair natural the reason I haven't been hired thus far, and I said well if they don't then I ain't suppose to work for them. I had two fantastic interviews last week and I will keep yall abreast of whether I get one of those positions. If I don't then it wasn't for me. My sistah stylist friend told me sistahs are wearing wigs and brothas are cutting their hair for interviews with white
corporate America. Ha! I know we need $$ to pay the bills and eat, but don't give up your power because you go into "their" world already defeated. Is it better to be hired and denounce who you are for the sake of getting and keeping a job, to later get fired for some other freakinnnn reason "they" can whip up. I sported an afro on a job interview and got the job the next day. I retained my various natural styles up until I left and still sportin them. Whoever hires me will know I am free...It starts in the spirit. I ain't my hair.

Holla.

Hi Everybody--

Thanks everyone so much for your support. I was really disturbed about that girl's comment on the train and I wasn't sure how to handle it--but I did want her to know I didn't have anything to hide. (By the way, her hair was 'fried and dyed').

I think her comment really affected me because it brought back memories of high school, when all my friends were allowed to press and relax their hair, and they really gave me grief about my own hair being "nappy"...How I envied them! Too bad it took me years to gain the confidence to go natural. I'm so glad that I have the support of everyone in this forum.

And Froy--I LOVED your story--I'm sure you didn't look crazy--you looked proud to be you!

HI Toby,

I think what you did warrants a smile on the faces of all natural wearing people in the city.. I too am from Chicago now living in the north suburbs. I had the EXACT experience when i was living in the city. And yes,, I was also on the train(red-line)... i had on a very big head wrap at the time, it was summer and my hair was done nicely under the wrap.. A young girl maybe late teens said a friend of hers she was with that " That chick must think she Erykah Badu or something" Her friend said in reply " I bet her S**t all f****d up under that big ass scarf.... Me being aware that these were obvious young girls decided to let that one pass until they started doing tribal like dances on the train... As ignorant as they looked it was a sad sight... I took my wrap off nice and slowly and prepared to get off the train while it was raining bad.... When i took off my wrap and they saw my long locs very maintained and healthy........they shut up real quick and just looked at
each other.... once i got off and up the escalator i noticed that they were on the same escalator. while they scrambled to put their jackets over their heads, I walked out of the bus station proudly while it was raining and smiled to myself...I know I must have looked crazy to a lot of people but i didn't care... just wanted to share that with you.

Hi Everyone-

I live near Chicago, and had to take the CTA train today. Sitting behind me was a couple whom I tried really hard to ignore, since they were having this detailed conversation about how the girlfriend was pregnant, and had lied to her doctor about drinking. Then they proceeded to start talking about people who were riding the train.

I heard the guy say something like, "Look at this person in front of us. I wonder what's under her hat?" (I wear a "rasta-style" winter cap with my hair stuffed inside it--it's a small one, so it looks like I have on a big beret). The girlfriend says, "It's a head full of naps--people who need a touch-up have to cover their *$@# up!"

I slowly pulled off my hat, and they were speechless! They were quiet until they prepared to get off the train about three or four stops later. I glanced up at the couple as they passed in front of where I was sitting, and the girlfriend says in a small voice, "I like your locs".

Not that I had anything to prove to the couple, but I really wanted it known that I wasn't covering my hair because it looked bad (or was nappy), but because it is Chicago in January! (Although it's a bit warmer than it normally is).

I just wanted to share this story.

View message header detail Sherrie,

Thanks for reading about my hair journey and giving me feedback.

I think it's beautiful that your mom still assists with your hair. If my mom lived closer, I would definitely have her assisting with mine because she braids really well. Your mother sitting and rolling it is the first step toward her accepting it.

Both of my parents were surprisingly supportive of me cutting my hair. My mom actually cut the relaxer out of her own hair a month after I cut mine. I went to visit them in California this Christmas and they liked my hair even better in person. My aunt however reacted by asking how I could cut my beautiful hair. It wasn't exactly a negative comment, but it wasn't positive either. I wanted so much to say that I didn't cut beautiful hair, I cut processed hair, I am just now growing beautiful hair.

Well, thanks again for your feedback. I wish you well on your natural journey!

Diego2Memphis, thanks for sharing your awesome journey. Ford Motor Company relocated my hair stylist brother to Memphis, Tennessee from Kansas City, Missouri. He has since relocated for another promotion to Ranchamongo (sp?), California. It will be interesting to see what will happen in light of all the media surrounding Ford Company but we have faith. Your hair journey was quite enlightening and more encouraging for me to read. My mother who is a Southern Belle from Louisiana is still having issues, but they are hers and not mine. She seemed delighted to roll my twists with foam rollers last week so I guess a little southern tradition added to my natural twists will help her somehow begin to accept. My dad just looked on in amazement while she was rolling my hair and I guess wonderin what the heck is she doin to her hair. I ain't ashamed to say that I am a nappy and happy 43 year old sistah--and my mama still assists every now and then with my hair, and I ain't co
dependent.

RE: [Naturally You! eCommunity] washing without shampoo?

2007-10-27 19:55:10

I no Poo (shampooing with conditioner). But I think the key is to use a light conditioner. I have fine hair and I've never had buildup. Suave naturals conditioners seem to help alot I know other people use different ones that work for them. I didn't know about all the no poo concoctions people made until Nappturallity.com LOL I use a shampoo bar once a month regardless. And I heard you shouldn't use the protein conditiners for the no poo because it could make your hair hard from all the protien buildup. and alot of conditioners have a slight detergent ingredient in them that actually can lightly clean your hair. I think you should try it, I did it too while my hair was relaxed, and as I think about it it makes alot more sense for natural hair , but lots of women don't like it for thier hair (because they say it doesn't feel right for them). So I guess it's just best to try it on your tresses [INLINE] I use it like normal shampoo then shea butter my hair as usual.

Hi,

I'll be going to the expo this weekend. I live in the Towson area. I had been natural since May 2005, and I just did the big chop right before the New Year came in. I'm going to see what's new as far a products for me and my daughters hair; as well as new style I can probably maintain myself besides the TWA I have been wearing, which looks FABULOUS. I excited, because this will be my first Natural Hair Care Expo.

Reply back re NaturallyNatasha's post re Hair Terminology

Right on right on, NaturallyNatasha. Many thanks to you sistah for posting
about the use of "lye" and "perm." When I was replying re incorrect use of
the other words as relating to our hair the above hair terms did not come
into my thoughts--but I have certainly heard them used incorrectly many
times by our sistahs in our salons and I continue to hear them used
incorrectly. I have a cordial relationship with many of my natural stylist
friends/staff so I feel comfortable in correcting their clients who are
familiar with my presence and my persona, and those who aren't are receptive
when I communicate forthright in a respectful manner. Each individual up to
this day has been very receptive and thanked me for my communication to
them. We must empower our sistahs and brothas to use our hair terms
correctly . He that hath ears to hear..

I have locs/comb coils that will be a week old on Friday. My loctician says not to get them wet for at least a month. Others say that the more you wash the faster they loc. Washing as frequently as 3x a week starting out is a good thing.

Please send me your experiences.

Thanks Sharon. My last relaxer was August 24, 2001. I made the big cut in February 2002. It was tough for me because my hair was pretty long, about 4 inches below my shoulders. It's been difficult sometimes but I'm glad I did it and stuck with it. Trust me, I came close to relaxing it again several times so I understand where you've been. Sometimes I just don't want to be bothered with it. On those days, I pull it back and wrap a pretty scarf on it. People think I'm very dressy or doing something special on those days. They have no idea that I'm just having a "bad hair day." I'm still experimenting and adjusting to my hair but I'm beginning to enjoy and appreciate it instead of feeling like it's a never-ending chore. Best wishes on your journey, whatever you decide to do.

Salon in Jackson, MS: The Hair Closet by Janice

2007-10-19 19:43:44

One of my sisters, a permie, went there for the first time to get her hair
done, and she noticed that every other client that came through the door
had a natural hairstyle. It turns out that the salon specializes in natural
hair care. She even sold her some natural hair products for her four-year-
old daughter, which made her hair very soft.
She couldn't wait to tell me about it, so I thought I'd share it with you just
in case someone in the area doesn't know about them and is looking for
a salon. More info here:

Response to April for Friend whose hair is falling out

2007-10-17 22:34:28

Hi April, my name is Mia Simone and I'm the owner of Mia Simone's Boutique.
I read your comment from our Naturally You Group. It sounds like the doctors
haven't identified the root cause of your friend's hair falling out problem,
but it appears that you gave her good advice as to one of the possible
reasons why she is experiencing this problem. Stress, genetics, chemicals,
bad hair grooming habits and diet (not getting sufficient daily nutrients,
exercise and water) are often times some of the causes to why people's hair
fall out. Your friend may be experiencing serious stress and have one or
more of the other possible sources (diet, genetics, chemicals etc).
Based on the information you provided I would definitely continue to
encourage your friend to reduce the stress in her life (exercise helps to
reduce stress and also helps the body's circulation which is beneficial for
hair growth). Some years ago I was under severe stress and didn't even
realize it because I had been under it for so long (family problems that
caused me to have to step into roles that I should not have had to and take
responsibillities that were not mine etc....in addition to being the sole
provider for my mother and sister right after graduating from
college...AND...trying to get acclimated to working in corporate America
right after graduating from college and then later learning and suffering
from health issues--fibroid tumors. As you can see this is a lot to deal
with and the only reason why I'm sharing my personal information is to give
you (or your friend ....feel free to copy and paste my response to your
comment to your friend), more insight on how serious stress can be. The
stress that I was under I perceived at that time to be just frustration with
certain things until a close friend told me that due to all the stuff I was
going through, that I was under a lot of stress. I then gave my friend's
comment much consideration and linked my own hair loss to stress. After I
removed and reduced the stress areas from my life I noticed an improvement
in my hair---stopped falling out.
I do not know the source of your friends hair falling out problems but I do
know how various things like stress genetics, chemicals, bad hair grooming
habits and diet (not getting sufficient daily nutrients exercise and water)
are often times some of the causes to why people's hair fall out.
On another note you can tell your friend that I have a product that is 100%
natural that may help to improve her condition and ease some of the negative
symptoms of her hair problem and it is called Aloe Vera Herbal Leave-In
Treatment. You can read the detailed product information and testimonials
about this product on my web site. Also, continue to encourage your friend
to reduce the stress in her life and give her examples of ways she can do
this (example: exercise, dealing with certain personal issues or people,
taking relaxation breaks each week, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced
healthy diet etc). I hope this infromation is helpful to you. My web site

Re: MALCOLM X SYNDROME

2007-10-17 04:49:56

i recommend the following: stop using everything. stop using every
single product, including shampoo. it is possible to develop an
allergy to something you did not have an allergy to before.
just rinse your hair with water for a couple of days, no shampoo of
any kind. if you are worried about how your hair looks, use a headwrap
or double strand twist it or braid it damp without products (not sure
how long it is).
if you think you may have hard water, rinse you hair with distilled
water - cover all bases. my skin reacts poorly to tap water depending
on where i am.
ONE AT A TIME try products. start with aloe vera. it is an oil free
moisturizer. some people have trouble with oils, which is why i'm
starting there. take a spray bottle, fill with distilled water, and
add some aloe vera juice, which you can get at the natural foods
store. spray on hair and scalp. DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE, NOTHING, FOR
ONE WEEK. (sorry to yell, but this is serious!) rinse your hair with
water, it does not need to be washed with shampoo frequently.
if you scalp is still itching like mad, stop the aloe vera, and don't
use anything but water again for a few days. the next thing i would
try is plain extra virgin olive oil. don't add a single thing to it.
just apply to damp hair and scalp. still do not wash it with shampoo -
you are starting with it clean as of today.
johnson's baby shampoo is supposed to be gentle but i'm not sure what
that means since it's a chemical product. i would stick with things
that i know 100% what's in them - one thing: aloe is in aloe, olive
oil is in olive oil. if your head is still itching with the plain
olive oil, i would go quickly to a dermatologist.
if it doesn't start itching, you can go back to your products, again being very
careful to add one by one with no overlap. if it is one of the products you're
using, you should be able to tell because you are introducing each one
separately.
one more thing - to soothe the itching apply a cold compress (with
cool water or an ice pack) to your scalp.
hth, KC

I Actually found some at Super Walmart and the Dollar Tree, can u belive the Dollar Tree, LOL. (They be havin some hidden deals [INLINE] .....even though everythings a dollar) AND they are really durable. They come in wide bands and thin bands and I actually found some suade ones. The wide suade ones come in packs of 2 and the colored ones come in packs of 8-10 depending on if some of them have flower appliques on them...but the ones there have plain AND decorated ones in the packs.

The ones I'm wearing in the photos came from the Dollar Tree and the ones I'm gonna wear in 4 weeks (for my update) will be the ones made from Goody brand I got from Super Walmart. They come in ALOT of different colors (8 in a pack) I haven't found any decorated ones by Goody yet and (to my delight) they are reversible I was suprised because until I saw other naturals wear them I never found any and now I have ALOOOT. [INLINE] I won't be sleepin on Dollar Tree anymore. LOL [INLINE]

Re: scalp issues

2007-10-14 18:46:45

Hey thanks so much for the tips everyone! I really appreciate what everyone had
to say. A
couple of the messages came through in my email as "This message is not in a
displayable
format" - I don't know why (If html is the issue, I am able to read html in my
email)..
weird..
Anyway, the comments that I _could_ read helped me so much. I checked on a few
websites for Seborrhea Dermatitis - I don't think that's what I have. Although
I could be
wrong.
As for what else I'm using on my scalp... Um.. Nothing.. I don't know how to
take care of
my hair! I found some coconut oil that I use sometimes.. But I really do
neglect my scalp -
I mostly put things in my hair without thinking about my scalp. I'm so scared
of
"angering" my scalp and I just really want my hair to grow.
I've never heard of using antiseptic mouth wash on my scalp - I may try that
out. As well
as all of the other oils that everyone suggested. Wrong things I was definitely
doing was
1) using regular vinegar - man! I did it twice in two days and my scalp is
ULTRA dry now.
2) doing it way too often - even if it was only twice in two days - I need to
cut back to no
more than once a week.
Also - I definitely had poor washing and conditioning habits - I just starting
parting my
hair when I wash it a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks again for all the advice - and Lina, thanks for the recipe!
I'll definitely welcome any more that anyone has!
Blessings to all,
-Chava

Candace,

My hair is also incredibly thick and sometimes dry. In the winter, be sure to sleep with a humidifier in the room so that the heat in the air doesn't dry out the hair so much. I use mostly QP products and I deep condition quite often. Always use a detangler when combing. These are just a few tips from me.

Pro-line Softener

2007-10-14 07:55:06

Pro-line Softener is part of a product line including texturizers, and
designed to care for texturizers. You can still use it on your hair without a
texturizer (as far as I know, please check the ingredients first to be sure) but
make sure you don't get confused when looking for the product.
In my research for this product I came across this website. Remember,
the information is as reported by customers and may not have been
investigated by the FDA. Still, very interesting.

in their hair to clear up scalp issues (I don't know if it's dry or
oily - it's very flaky (not dandruff though), scaby and itchy). I'm
not in the states and I have a hard time finding clarifying shampoos
and stuff... I'm trying vinegar as an experiment and I'm wondering
what ya'll think! :) If this is a hands down BAD idea for some
reason, please let me know! I'm desperately trying to grow my hair -
it's been the same length, about 4 inches stretched, for years! And
I know now that it must be scalp issues causing all the problems.

Also do people who lock their hair still need to trim their ends?
Most people in their surveys said they do their own hair, so, do you go to the

I actually went to my stylist, who highlighted my locs for me. I'm going to see him this weekend--I'll ask him about it.

My locs are highlighted on the ends...I submitted pictures about nine months ago, and added two new pictures today:

Re: [Naturally_You] question:crimping locs

you could probably take several locs (dampened with setting lotion or aloe gel)- and braid them, then unravel the braid when dry. Small braided sections would probably give more definition than larger ones. I am not so keen on using heat to create the same look - could dry out your locs. There are these cool things called Crimping rods - sorta look like little plastic waffle irons (LOL) and you just clamp em onto to your wet hair, let dry, then take em off. I am thinking of getting them . That would be more useful, I think.

here's the link - you may be able to find them at your local beauty store if you live in a very trendy urban to old school area - I have yet to find these and many people dont even think I am speaking English when I ask (LOL) I will be going to CHicago for Christmas so I'll see if I can find these.....

Hope that helps!
