Hi, I hope this can be of some help. Earlier in the year I asked for
suggestions of things to do in the city since I'm new here and I was
sent an extensive list, several of which I've tried and love. I've
been to Sylvia's and the food is good but the line on Sunday was so
long because tourist tours go there too. Also, Mobay Restaurant in
Harlem (there's one in BK too)is a nice place. Going from Times
Square to Fulton is not far if you catch the the subway, and it's
worth it.
Anyway, here are some suggestions from 'nyc_eve37':
"Let me start by saying 'Welcome to New York City'.
This is a long message but it is just a 'starter' list of Afro-
centric activities in metro NYC area. As the saying goes "So much to
do, so little time"
Let's start with the Dance:
Djoniba's Dance and Drum Centre, 17th Street - all types of African-
based dance and drumming classes: African, Caribbean, Brazilian,
HipHop, Belly Dance. Very high energy, highly recommended.
The Harlem YMCA has wonderful dance classes. Mouminatou, Abdoulaye
Diata and Funmilayo teach here and at Djoniba. Mambo/Salsa class on
Saturday Morning with the Mambo Fanatics. You don't have to be a
member and classes are very reasonably priced. Last August, the 'Y'
held a wonderful Dance and Drum Conference. Also highly recommended
Hansborough Parks And Recreation on 135th between 5th& Adam clayton
Powell has African dance classes on Sat from 1 to 5. These are
excellent and affordable. Again, highly recommended
Dance Theater of Harlem and Alvin Ailey are world class companies
and schools.
LaRocque Bey, 441 Manhattan Ave, Rod Rodgers on East 4th,
Charles Moore Dance School, Bklyn
Creative Outlet of Dance, Bklyn,
Maimouna Keita School of African Dance, 586 Halsey Street,Bklyn NY
11233
Salsa y Mambo- Eddie Torres, SantoRico, Addy Rodriguez, PielCanela,
Carlos Konig.
OLDSKOOL - Felix Hernandez' Rhythym Revue Dance will be at the Lab,
Brooklyn, Feb 12 and at Roseland, Manhattan in March.
