Hi Tanya--
Thank you so much for your compliment. Two years ago, I had long, relaxed hair. I went to my stylist (who had done braids for me a few times) and had him put my relaxed hair into Senegalese twists. Then, as my natural hair grew out, he would twist the root and tie with string, about once a month. (Unfortunately, I was too "chicken" to cut my hair and start from scratch!)
For the most part, the string will eventually fall out, but there is a little string embedded in my hair. A lot of people don't like this technique, and I do realize that hair can be locked without string. What I like about using the string is that there is no product used to twist my locs. Every two weeks, I get it washed, and conditioned, then twisted, and tied. (Every other visit I get my roots touched up with color).
Anyway, as my natural hair continued to grow out and was tied, I would cut some of the relaxed twists at the bottom. And yes, my hair did look kind of "weird" for a while. Last June of 2004, I finally cut the rest of the relaxed twists off, because the difference between my newly locked hair and the relaxed twists was becoming very noticable.
Once I cut off the relaxed hair, I "styled" my locs into a bob. That's when I really wished I had been brave enough to cut off all the relaxed hair before I began my journey of locking.
About your question concerning my hair texture: I think my hair is of 'medium' texture. It's very wavy, definately not fine-textured at all, but it's not coarse either. In it's unlocked state, it's quite soft, especially when freshly washed. However, at the crown, it's quite a bit coarse. In fact, I used to have growth problems with that section of hair, but since it's no longer damaged from relaxing, it's growing now.

Wow! Your locs look great! How did you start them, and how would you describe your hair texture?
Thanks,
Tanya

Hi Ladies--
I'm very camera shy, but I finally posted a couple pictures of my hair. Feel free to tell me what you think:
