Thanks Aleatha,

I am so grateful for the welcoming responses and for those of you who have visited my website. I've checked a few flicks and you sistas are beautiful. I don't have locs but I rock a big funky curly fro'. Any other fro's in the house?

ps. about the miss jessie's curly balm, I've haven't used it but I make something like it for my hair. I don't sell it but I can give you the link to the recipe I use as a base. I have remixed it with essential oils best for my hair but this is the basic recipe. It makes my hair and my daughter's hair super soft and lengthens our tight curls without the use of chemicals.

Re: [Naturally_You] My Pics This Time...Starting My Locs

2007-01-29 11:59:48

Hi Tanya--

Thank you so much for your compliment. Two years ago, I had long, relaxed hair. I went to my stylist (who had done braids for me a few times) and had him put my relaxed hair into Senegalese twists. Then, as my natural hair grew out, he would twist the root and tie with string, about once a month. (Unfortunately, I was too "chicken" to cut my hair and start from scratch!)

For the most part, the string will eventually fall out, but there is a little string embedded in my hair. A lot of people don't like this technique, and I do realize that hair can be locked without string. What I like about using the string is that there is no product used to twist my locs. Every two weeks, I get it washed, and conditioned, then twisted, and tied. (Every other visit I get my roots touched up with color).

Anyway, as my natural hair continued to grow out and was tied, I would cut some of the relaxed twists at the bottom. And yes, my hair did look kind of "weird" for a while. Last June of 2004, I finally cut the rest of the relaxed twists off, because the difference between my newly locked hair and the relaxed twists was becoming very noticable.

Once I cut off the relaxed hair, I "styled" my locs into a bob. That's when I really wished I had been brave enough to cut off all the relaxed hair before I began my journey of locking.

About your question concerning my hair texture: I think my hair is of 'medium' texture. It's very wavy, definately not fine-textured at all, but it's not coarse either. In it's unlocked state, it's quite soft, especially when freshly washed. However, at the crown, it's quite a bit coarse. In fact, I used to have growth problems with that section of hair, but since it's no longer damaged from relaxing, it's growing now.

Tobi

Tanya <artisticme2001@...

Wow! Your locs look great! How did you start them, and how would you describe your hair texture?

Thanks,

Tanya

Re: Relaxer Gone Bad

2007-01-28 18:52:02

I think she should sue the store that sold it to her as well. The
Optimum that does not come in a home relaxer kit is supposed to only
be sold to licensed professionals. It does not come with neutralizer
and that is one reason it is not supposed to be slod to the general
public and it is a lye perm. Some one should have suggested that she
purchase a neutralizer shampoo since thay did sell her the relaxer.
But the store is at fault as well for selling the product to a non-
licensed person.

2007-01-26 19:29:07

Hi! What hair texture/type would you say yours is? Is it like a 3a-3c or something like that? I'm asking because when I want a big fro, I could let it air dry, but I have to either braid/twist it and then pick it out. If I just let it air dry alone, then "shrinkage city"! and it would probably be a tangled mess too!

Nothing special, I wash my hair with different products almost everytime, a lot of time I'll use cream of nature. After I let it air dry I use Olive Oil dressing by Oraganic Root Stimulator.

You can start fotki with a free account or a premium account. I have a free account. I basically register my name and some other basic info ( I try to keep it sparse, to avoid ID theft) and then it will let you know how you can download photos thru your computer. I have Windows XP, so there is a Pictures folder that I store my downloaded pictures. I pick the ones I want to put on fotki and then it zooms them there. Its pretty straightforward.

2007-01-25 18:26:15

Hi All!

I too haven't posted in a while. However, this story was so appauling that I am forced to write. I think that this is crazy!! As far as I'm concerned, there should be a warning on all products that are hazardous just like there are on cigarettes (as mentioned in the article), household products (which tell you that if it is swallowed and/or inhaled it can be harmful). There are even warnings on records (explicit lyrics) sorry to get off the subject but we need to look into this. I think that some people might say oh, I'm natural or don't use those products so it doesn't effect me but this is so untrue. We mustn't wait until this happens to a family or friend to speak out. We need to inform our family and friends of the implications of perms/relaxers and show them the article. K Li, thanks so much for sharing this informative article.

BTW, Lina, I haven't forgotten you. Will email you soon!! =)

Hello all,

I haven't posted in awhile. I just wanted to state, that I think it's important to a combination of both, as Petrolina stated. On "motowngirl" website it talked about vitamins and the importance of taking supplements. I don't quite believe in quick fixes, but steer more towards becoming a healthier person as a whole. We can slather on products to make our hair appear healthy, and/or make what we have as healthy as it can be, but it is important to take care of our bodies, internally and externally. I think the best way to have good hair growth, with healthy hair, is to take care of our bodies and ourselves as a whole. You can have a head full of healthy long hair and it will start to fall out due to stress. So we should exercise, take multivitamins, create better eating habits, and eat healthier, drink plenty of water, and take care of our hair, skin, nails, ourselves, reduce our stress, and live happy lives. There. hahaha

I know it's easier said than done. But we can all atain it.

well i guess i am very dramatic because i had the yarn put in and now i have nubian locs which they can transform into dreads. i am ready but i can't take that stage. truthfully it comes with being teased as a child but it was never anything wrong with being dark and beautiful and i realize that now. i was told 2 months is all i need or i can keep in until the roots grow to the length i want them. my hair isn't short but shoulder length naturally the dreads made me feel near bare up top of my head but i now understand that patience is the key during this transformation. my nubian locs are chin length and i love updo's quite often. everyone that seen my hair prior to the nubian locs loved it, but it was me who needed to feel comfortable. i thank you for your photos and you kind words and i am going to make it through this because i love the naturalness that our african americans display so again thank you and i will be on the site getting more helpful tips on how to deal
with the transformation

aleatha...
this is that wonderful time, when you exhale, meditate, and learn to
accept your hair even when you feel like it's lookin' crazy.
more frequent visits to the loctician can help, as well as some
extra TLC right where you are. look through the archives, a few of
the other sisters here have been going through this as well.
look for the next issue of Naturally You!, which will feature an
article, "the care & feeding of baby locs".
most of all, take this time to focus on you, on the inside. the locs
will be lovelier than you imagined before you know it.
good luck,

Re: [NappyHair] howse correction

2007-01-23 22:42:55

oops! - my blurb on cathy howse was a little incorrect. there is no nettle or horsetail in the conditioner
(too bad!) but the silica is a primary component of the horsetail herbal tea ( or supplement). Coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, wheat germ oil are all great for the hair as well. Wheat germ is very high in vitamin E and is a natural antioxidant ( for you swimmers out there) Stearic acid is a vegetable based (hopefully) thickening agent. I am not a fan of the preservatives, though ( Urea and the parabens - carcinogenic and allergenic) and fragrance means..... another chemical, maybe?

The Dew and Lotion Crème are not as natural as I would like. You can mimic Dew with a basic aloe vera juice and olive oil combo or olive oil and water combo (try rosewater or other floral waters). The lotion crème has a number of silicone derivatives for shine, which you can substitute with your favorite oil ( or nature's blessing for those who have it).

glad she is finally giving up the perm -you never know who's watching - even a "hair expert" like Ms. Howse has found the natural way.

Its actually decently priced, but I think one can still find preservative-free herbal products cheaper and locally - but I may support my sister in the future. ...

Getting hair cut UPDATE!!!

2007-01-22 11:01:47

I pressed my hair for a recent 3 week holiday touring the US. It seemed the best option as it included camped and being on the road. As for braids I've vowed never to do them again as I feel they dry out the hair beyond repair. In fact as some of my hair had remained straight from the pressing, I may not press my hair again either.

Getting hair cut UPDATE!!!

What I have experienced is when I dry my hair with a dryer my hair loses it natural coil pattern. Also when I press it it loses it also. The best thing to do is to stop the abuse ASAP! Ask your stylist to air dry your hair and if she is hesitant about it choose another stylist. I know it is hard to find the one true stylist but the pattern your stylist is taking will permanently alter your hair structure. I have soft curly hair similar to Sabrina's and the fro is massive as well but I have straight textured hair at the top and the sides from where I have blown my hair dry. I hope this helps and I wish you lots of luv and luck on your natural hair journey!

Peace,

Kristi

Hey Sabrina:
Your pix are PHLY!! I remember, before I locked, I wore my hair in a
large FRO and loved it.
This is the reason I love Naturally You Magazine. I remember seeing
you and GhettoSongBird at the photo shoot.
Recently, I had a few Naturally You's and many folks commented on
your cover (boy, that's sister's FABULOUS)!! In fact, they asked me
to introduce you to them. I told them no way :)
Although we didn't meet formally, I was in that issue and I'm in the
new issue.
The calendar's came out nice too, didn't they?
Peace

The Curly pudding would make my curls more defined. If I dried my
hair I would pull on a section of hair as it dried, this would
stretch the curls out. As the jar says to use generously, if I did
that then it would leave a white residue or would flake

Re: Fw: Popular shampoos contain toxic chemicals

2007-01-21 01:23:30

Thanks for the article. I got am email similar to this some years
ago, and I felt it was too overwhelming to do anything about it at
the time. Now after going natural, change seems plausible.
I went by a local natural foods store a couple of weeks ago, and I
thought that some of the products were a little pricey. I went ahead
and bought a couple of oils for my hair, and I am pleased with it,
although my niece and nephew think that the tea tree oil smells like
feet (smile)! Don't worry - they like the rosewood oil.
Anyway, even if I have to make one change at a time, I want to live a
healthier life.

Off Topic: What Kind of Eater Are You?

2007-01-20 21:59:15

I have been adapting (or trying to adapt) my eating habits to work
better for my body chemistry. I do a combination of food combining
and trying to cut sugar and stick to complex carbs. I also often eat
organic and all natural foods. I often "backslide", partially
because the only thing close by is a bodega, and they only have good
old fashioned candy bars - no organic sesame seed and rice syrup
bars. I also end up eating late at night because of my schedule, but
anyway...
I have noticed many naturals trying to eat healthier, some becoming
vegetarian, some remaining carnivorous but eating only organic, some
eating only lean meats, some just chicken and fish, some veggies and
fish, some vegan, some cutting out junk food. I'm curious - what
kind of eater are you? Come to the website to answer the poll.

Re: [Naturally_You] toxic chemicals--Petrolina--you are right!

2007-01-20 03:57:34

Hi Petrolina--

You are so right about foods and chemicals affecting the skin and scalp. I had a sandwich the other day which was flavored with a strong mustard. The mustard was so strong, I felt like my sinuses cleared, and this will sound ridiculous, but my scalp even tingled. I couldn't even finish my lunch, and I remember thinking, "Could a food (or condiment) really cause these effects?"

I have also heard about the gray-green residue from relaxers and chemicals. I'm sure that's one of the reasons why pregnant women are advised not to relax, perm, or color their hair.

I meant to write to tell you that I enjoy your advice and suggestions.

here's some compelling information to maintain natural hair with natural hair products. If you can't pronounce the words, or don't have a clue what the ingredient does to the hair, you should probably not use it. There are some cosmetic ingredient dictionaries that tell you what to avoid. You can go to amazon.com, overstock.com and purchase them- otherwise research some of those ingredients on the label and surf the internet. I found a cosmetic dictionary for cheap at my local half-price books store and I was like %$#@! that's why my hair was still breaking off. If you are natural, no need to keep using products for relaxed (chemically-treated!) hair. If you are still relaxed, make an informed decision and switch now.

There is another article I read that said the autopsies of black women in the south showed a gray-green residue on the tops of their brains - from lifetime relaxer use (and who knows what else - some hair styling products on the shelves today still have tar, carboxylic acid, sodium hydroxide (lye) and all kinds of mess in it!)

if you put it on your skin, it's IN YOUR BLOOD AND TISSUES.

Try this: Rub a small cut garlic clove on your foot or ankle. In a half hour or so you will smell it on your breath. You get a similar result when you drink peppermint tea - you probably feel it permeate every cell it reaches - very refreshing, right? Some people can smell the fast food they ate nights before in their sweat. It comes through your pores. Remember your skin is an ORGAN. There's liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure. Is your skin failing?

Some questions to leave you with...

1) What foods are you feeding your body? That's what's feeding your hair, skin and nails.

2) What foods are you feeding your hair and skin? They are still entering your body from your pores and follicles. It does not just sit there. It is being absorbed to some extent (maybe not to the naked eye).

3) Each thought you have sends chemical messages to the brain and in turn to the body. What'cha thinking about? Are those thoughts good for you?

4) Dont let your fears or your doubts keep you from trying something new. Give it time to work and be faithful. Your body (cells) needs at least 40 days to show you some results. That goes for exercise, bad habits, good habits, skincare.....you name it. Dont overwhelm yourself, either. There can be a detox reaction too when you start to clean your temple. It's like cleaning a really dirty room. You pick up a lot of dirt thru vacuuming/sweeping, but some of it gets stirred up into the air and creates dust. When you vacuum again, you pick up more dirt and less dust is present.

5) Are you really being the best "Natural You" possible? There is always room for improvement. Nobody's arrived.

I have read the article on the gray-green layer of scalp before. Ironically, I was mentioning this to someone else the other day, and they wanted me to email them the info, and I couldn't remember what site it was on. Do you still have this info.? If so, how can I access it?

Thanks,

Hey Lina!

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I like the one about using the rollers on the two-strand twists--I haven't tried that before! I have done lots of twist-outs and braid-outs though, and I must say that I do really like them!

The cornrow and weaved style lasted about 3 weeks. I absolutely love to wet my hair, either by shampooing, or just wetting with water, so I probably wouldn't let it go longer than that, plus the frizz factor.

Oh, yes! In my last post, I posted about ORS creamy olive oil. I've tried multiple products from that line and they all seem to be pretty good to me too!

Thanks again,

Tanya
Petrolina Okoro <okorolina40@...

Hey Tanya -

Your fros and puffs are really cute! I like the cornrows with the curly weave in the back. How long did that style last? I just posted a few new pics of my venture out into the afro world - its not as high maintenance as I thought - if you take of your ends. I'm probably sounding like a broken record right about now, but I've been using Org. root stim for a few years and consistent for one year, and it really is working for me and my motherland naps. And Nature's gate- well, I just can't say enough bout it! You have to try it for yourself. Smiley emoticon

a twistout/braidout would be really cute on you and can give you more fullness. I'm not all that fond of comb coils, because my hair is thick and a lot longer than the standard length for doing those. You can also do the two-strand, using smaller twists on air-dried hair. Then put ends on small rollers to achieve the fullness you want - and hide some the partings. if you twist while wet, it takes a few more days for the hair to "fill out".

Looking forward to seeing more hairstyles (and albums) from other natural sistahs in the group.

this is that wonderful time, when you exhale, meditate, and learn to

more frequent visits to the loctician can help, as well as some

look for the next issue of Naturally You!, which will feature an

Getting hair cut UPDATE!!!

2007-01-18 07:35:51

Let it air dry, My name is Sabrina Revelle, I was on one of the covers of Naturally You with my afro and it is a huge afro, If you saw me today you wouldn't believe it, my hair is straight as straight can be. So I wear my hair very different ways all you have to do is wash condition then let it air dry, it should start to swell and curl up, do not blow dry it at all not even without the comb, it will limit the time it has to curl and tighten up. After it drys then you can moisturize it with whatever dressing you use. Hope this works for you.

Just to let you all know- I went to the salon. I decided not get a barber to cut it. The Lady who did (thank God) did a really good job - the only problem was she use heat - hair dryer and that heat straighten my hair. So I have been braiding my hair (cornrow-french braids -to others) but I still cant get that nappiness that I crave never really could do an afro: thought by cutin' it I could - I believe my hair is naturally wavy-straight! So I will continue to wash my hair and braid it - any suggestions to keepin' it "nappy" instead of wavy.

you can by it from Whole Foods Market or your local health food store. also www.supplementwarehouse has the cheapest prices I've seen online. You can get essential oils there too. I also noticed my local grocery store beginning to carry more natural products, too. Look to local sources first if you can.

FYI: Heating Appliances

2007-01-15 01:27:26

What do I need to know about appliances?
Blow dryers and curling irons can be our best friends
and our worst enemies. They are both.
With the need to always look our best, we can't live without
them. if you are a regular user of blow dryers and/or
curling irons, you can rest assured that your hair is
breaking more than necessary. These appliances can make
the already low moisture levels of curly hair even worse.
When used together they are definitely not our fiends. But
with proper use, we can limit the damage they do and still
realize the benefits they bring to appearance.
For a lot of sisters, heated appliances are used on a daily
basis. In addition, when we are attempting to get a longer style,
we tend to use more hair sprays to hold them in place. The
combination of daily use of heated appliances and hair spray is
deadly to the hair.
Of all of the things we do to our hair on a daily basis this is
the most responsible for damage to the cortex. It disturbs
the moisture balance of our hair and can deteriorate it so
much that the hair strands can no longer collect or hold moisture.
They also cause swelling of the outer layer of the hair shaft.
This is caused by evaporating the moisture that is already in
it and causing the hair to swell. When the hair contracts it
leaves cracks in the cuticle. You have probably noticed the
same effect with a hot dog. Well, that's your hair, too.
Whatever the short-term benefits, in the long term the
results are "not pretty".
If the appliance is really hot, it can actually make the
moisture boil which causes the natural curl pattern. This
weakens the coils in the hair. Unfortunately after all
of this heat and damage, our hair usually goes back to
its original form, but a lot weaker and a lot more
likely to break.
And what do we do? We do it all over again the next day.

RE: [Naturally_You] Natural Hair in Afro-Cuban History

Hotep Myriam!

Thanks for suggesting the article by Del La Torre. The article is enlightening, I knew there was a racial construct in Cuba, but the article plainly shows how racism has shaped Cuba. It's amazing to see that while the world population has African blood in its veins, the world rejects itself by castigating the African.

You should also try Nature's Gate for pure herbal extracts and botanicals. It
has the Original Herbal Shampoo which was rated as the #1 best-selling shampoo

also come in Aloe Vera - restores lost hair protein; Biotin; Chamomile - helps

I have decided to give the "No Poo" hair washing method a try

shampoos and conditioners with alcohol in them were for your

ingredient. I looked through about 60 lables and finally was able
to find one line of products that is alcohol free. I am proud to say
that I found this line among the Afro-American hair products and
i am really excited to try it. It is Isoplus Natural Remedy. The

Absolutely have a barber trim your hair. If you say take off one inch, he will; Unlike a hairdresser that you ask to take off one inch and she takes off two. A barber will always cut your hair the way you ask him to. This has been my experience. Valerie

Alcohol-Free shampoo and conditioner

2007-01-12 22:50:47

I have decided to give the "No Poo" hair washing method a try
finally, but for the past few months i've been hearing how bad
shampoos and conditioners with alcohol in them were for your
hair, so i tried to find a conditioner without alcohol as an
ingredient. I looked through about 60 lables and finally was able
to find one line of products that is alcohol free. I am proud to say
that I found this line among the Afro-American hair products and
i am really excited to try it. It is Isoplus Natural Remedy. The
items that i saw today were the shampoo, conditioner, and a tea
tree& aloe scalp treatment (moisterizer). I bought the conditioner
and scalp treatment and will be sure to post again in about two
weeks to let you all know how it's going.

Re: products I currently use

2007-01-12 18:36:36

Shampoo:
Avalon Organics Nourishing Shampoo - Lavender **
Aveda Brilliant shampoo
Homemade castile soap, with sage & lemongrass oils

Conditioner:
Aubrey Organics Island Natural Cream Rinse
Nature's Gate Original Herbal Conditioner**
Aveda Shampure conditioner
grocery -store mayonnaise ( regular, to deep-condition) **
shea butter, olive oil & lecithin mixture(homemade) **
Avalon ORganics Nourishing Conditioner - lavender
plain ole coconut oil

Leave In/Sprays:
Aveda Elixir leave-in conditioner
Infusium 23 **
Aloe Vera Juice (GNC) **
Rosewater **
Water & olive oil
(sometimes coconut water )

Styling Products: (for twists)
Bumble & Bumble curl conscious crème (new)
Org. Root Stim. Lock & Twist Gel**
Nature's Blessings Pomade ** ( helps with frizz - I mix with ORS Twist gel)
Org. Root Stim. Carrot Oil ** (little on scalp and for twists to shine)
Aubrey Organics B5 Design Gel ** ( best for sets - twist out, or smoothing hair down)

** what I use frequently

For my other styles, I use mostly a homemade mix of the "leave -in" products and some of the B5 Design Gel.

I try not to use anything thats not natural - these products are are reasonably priced (in my opinion) and they last a long time, especially now that I no-poo.

be naturally you !

2007-01-11 17:43:53

I've been in Wisconsin for 5 years, and there's at least one person every week that seriously contemplates being natural when they see my hair. You ladies and gents are catalysts for change - inside and out. . Remember that. Only represent yourself. Other people may want to "be you" or "like you", but its the "better, healthier self" that they really want to see. Some people have a certain "vibe" that you get from them.... You can feel their unhappiness. And many times we are drawn to unhappy people for that very reason - So they can see something different. I am happy to be nappy and hope you guys are too! I know some people who really are struggling mentally to break free from the "creamy crack" and its about self-image and esteem. So be strong for yourself. Cause you never know who's looking at you and the path you took to freedom.

RE: [Naturally_You] Shampoos and Conditioners

2007-01-11 09:58:31

Hi Kelly,

I have been using the Daily Defense "Tender Apple" for dry-damaged/color treated hair as my no poo conditioner wash. Then I mix the Hair Mayonnaise by Root Stimulator with some of my Oil by Surge. I then sit under a heating cap for 30min to 1 hour, rinse and then put in either the Pro-fectin pink leave in conditioner or pure aloe vera gel. Then I put my hair in about 8 flat twist and let it air dry. In the morning I may add a little Stay Soft Fro and that's it. Sometimes I use the Pantene Pro-V Hydrating Curls conditioner as a conditioner wash too.

I truly believe that. Thank you so much for the confirmation. Along with the
negative comments, I have also encouraged others to go natural. Some see me as
having courage to cut off all my hair and start over. I am at peace with my hair

Shampoos and Conditioners

2007-01-11 02:13:09

Does anyone know of any good shampoos and
conditioners? Specific brands would be helpful. A
friend recently informed me that the current product I
am using is doing more bad than good to my hair, in
the long run causing scalp irritation drying my hair
out. I'm up for suggestions. Thanks.

[Naturally_You] What is "No Poo"?

2007-01-10 09:27:07

Greetings,
It's better to use natural cleansers on the hair, all
natural shampoos and conditioners. Most of the products
that we use have harmful chemicals in them that over
time will cause build up under the scalp and will
cause the hair to break even fall out.For us sistahs
with natural hair we should use natural products,it
makes sense.Try to stay away from products that have
proplene glycol(anti-freeze)or petroleum or mineral
based products these are very harmful to the hair
shaft,cuticle,and root.

right now I've been using Nature's Gate herbal conditioner for the past three weeks. It works well for me, but I think I'll do a deep condition every other no-poo session to strengthen my hair. Natures gate conditioner is basically extracts of herbs. I just love it. I spray infusium 23 and aloe vera juice as my leave-in.

when your spirit is happy and at peace, other people will see something special in you. Sometimes we spend too much effort pleasing others and our spirits are yearning to break free. My husband was the same way with my perm. Now he cant wait for me to put my twists in an updo and dress up. I can tell you, when I stopped conforming to what others wanted for me and my life, I grew up and my hair grew too.

A good game may "how well do you know" this person. Come up with 10-15 questions
about the person that everyone should know all or most of the answers to and who
ever has the most right gets a prize. Like: what is (name) favorite saying?, How
long has (name) been living in (state/job), etc. Good luck!

low cut/ceasar style

2007-01-08 10:34:12

The ceasar cut and the reaction that many women get from it is so deep. Just
going natural has been a struggle for me, esp since my husband stopped talking
to me when I first cut my hair( it was down my back). I have been natural for15
months and almost 12 months post BIG CHOP. And my hair has grown so much. I
think he is just stuck on length, but he says he likes my hair now and he says
I'm beautiful. Going natural is a personal decision and I don't get as much
attention as I used to when I was permed, but the attention I do get are from
brothers and sisters that have a n appreciation for the spiritual self as
opposed to the physical outward self. Its like being a part of a family.

[Naturally_You] What is "No Poo"?

2007-01-08 09:41:41

I just had a converstaion with someone at work who told me that I needed to
shampoo my hair every week in order for it to grow. Well, I condition/wet my
hair everyday and my hair has grown so much over 11 months. I recently pressed
my hair and it was past my shoulders and I had a 1/2 inch fro last march!! But
she is from the ole school and made a comment that "how we do it is wrong". I
wanted to ask her well wht is your hair so short. Anyway. I basically use suave
and V05 conditioner. What conditioners/ shampoos do you use? I shampoo my hair
as needed. I am finding that while they still leave my hair soft, when it dries,
it is starting to have a different feel to it. I know its trail and error, but I
don't want to waste money either.

Hi all,
I know that this is off topic from talking about hair. I was just wondering if
anyone has ever thrown a going-away party (like I will be) and can give me
suggestions or ideas for it. If you know of any games or ice-breaker activities,
that would be great!! I have helped to throw showers and birthday parties before
but never a going-away party. Thanks in advance!!

Re: How do you deal with shrinkage? Does anybody know?

2007-01-06 19:03:41

A wash n' go certainly won't work if you want to control shrinkage.
You have to stretch your hair, preferably while wet, and allow it to
dry in the stretched position.
As somone mentioned, you can wash your hair, apply oil and/or
pomade, and braid or cornrow it. Allow it to dry completely. When
you remove the braids or cornrows, your hair will be textured but
stretched out much more than if you let it dry loose.
You can blow dry your hair to stretch it, but I don't recommend it.
The heat and pulling can be damaging, drying, and cause breakage.
Shrinkage is to a degree a fact of the natural's life, but you can
temporarily show your length without causing damage to your hair.

RE: [Naturally_You] Sky--Kinky Twists Left In Too Long...

2007-01-06 09:47:10

Hi Sky--

Leaving in twists and braids for a long time can lead to your hair locking at the new growth. A few years ago, I had my relaxed hair braided with extensions. I asked the stylist how long could I keep the braids in. She replied, "Oh, some people keep braids in for months."

I kept the braids in for 12 weeks. The braids still looked neat and "fresh" because when I washed my hair, my new growth would spiral and it looked like it was braided.

The problem was taking the braids out! I didn't realize how long it would take to remove the extended hair and then I had to try to comb out my own hair. My hair had locked in different parts of the new growth. I was scheduled for a relaxer the next day, and it took my stylist three hours to comb my hair out. (My hair was shoulder-length and I had extensions which reached the middle of my back).

After that, I got braids only twice during about five years, and only kept the braids in for 6 weeks. My hair is locked now and has been for two years. I had it locked by putting my relaxed hair in Senegalese twists, and having the new growth locked until I was "brave" enough to cut off the relaxed hair.

My advice to you is to not leave any type of "woven" style--braids, kinky twists, etc--in too long.

I just washed my hair and did 5 large flat twists while wet. I left it in yesterday and took it out today - such a nice fluffy, curly fro! If you like more texture, you can do cornrows instead. I'm not sure if I want to do this every night, but it is simple.

Re: [Naturally_You] How do you deal with shrinkage? Does anybody know?

2007-01-05 20:06:35

Shrinkage is a knee-jerk reaction of our natural hair pattern (kinky/nappy, tight-curled...)

its common sense if you look at how our hair is structured...in reaction to many products and water (many products do contain water).. you'll find that Definite response...

its "natural"...... meaning u cant escape it and if u try to escape it, it can only be for a short period of time, like perms...their not really permanent...every few weeks u face ur roots especially when u encounter natural elements like rain and sun. I imagine you can try to blow dry it to the desired lentgh- i think that'll work out nicely or.. u can comb your hair, apply a little grease and braid your hair and relase the braids- perhaps it will appear longer.

djuanwa_parker <dqtbrd@...

I normally wear my hair out, in a curly afro style. My hair coils
very tightly, but they are very soft spiral curls. I love my hair
texture, but I wish that it would fall a little more. When
straightened it meets my shoulders, but on a regular day it is about
as long as my pointer finger! It shrinks so much after I apply my
products and it dries. I wish it would hold the same, if not close to
the same length as when it is moist. How can I control the shrinkage,
but maintain my soft curly fro, or atleast most of my natural wage
pattern!!
In need of shrinkage advice!!
