New Styles??

2006-12-31 12:54:03

Hi all! I am new to the group and just subscribed to the magazine,
can't wait to get it. I have been natural for about a year since
having brain surgery. My hair is very soft and with little effort my
hair curls into very tightly coiled spirals, ( almost like a natual
looking straw set). I love my hair the way that it is and normally
wear it out, but I want to try something different. What would you
suggest for my texture of hair? Also when dry my hair stands about
two and a half inches from my head, but in reality it can be pulled
back into a pony-tail and when straightened meets my shoulders. What
would you suggest to control shrinkage or atleast minimize it?

I am now sporting a short afro that was once a ceaser cut....I LOVE IT....but at first i did think about what other people would think of my sexual preference...but after a while i did not even care because i look good and after a while the style will grow on you....dont worry about what others think of you just do it

i think it's the best hairstyle available for black women, well,
it's a tie with locs. i wore my hair like that for about 4-6 months
when i first went natural. i liked turtenecks, large earrings, or
tank tops. things that accentuate and lengthen your neck. big
shoulders like a suit jacket may detract from that. it does require
a mentality change, you can't hide behind your hair if you are
having a breakout, low self esteem moment, or whatever. also, if you
are a woman who relates hair to femininity that can be hard as well.
i had people call me a lesbian because of my haircut. i have to say,

What is "No Poo"?

2006-12-30 21:38:38

Hi All!
I am very fairly new to Naturally You and have seen a previous
message about "No Poo". I was wondering if someone can actually
explain what it is, how it is done, and what are the benefits. I
went to the hairdresser this morning and asked my stylist if she was
familiar with this method and she was not. I also wanted to know
what led you (some of you)to stop shampooing (with shampoo that is).
Is there something in the shampoo that is damaging to the hair or is
this just an alternative method that is preferred by some? I do know
that the salon that I go to uses all natural products (a lot which
are made in-house). I would love to know more so that I can optimize
my natural mane.
Please advise.

Re: [Naturally_You] HELP.... I NEED MOISTURE, SHINE, AND MOST OF ALL SOFTNESS (

2006-12-30 00:23:46

I sorta stumbled upon this effect after doing some research about the no poo method. I only use conditioner, and my hair is really shiny and soft. Suave and VO5 conditioners are gentle enough for everyday use. The best moisture for the hair is water, so I have my spray bottle with distilled water and a few drops of essential oil handy at all time. So, if you're on a budget (cause I KNOW I am!) Hit up Walmart for your conditioners and a gallon of distilled water, and swing by a whole foods store and select a couple small bottles of essential oil. Your hair will thank you.

Re: [Naturally_You] Happy & Nappy - Good Job...

2006-12-29 18:42:01

Hi Kaya--

I listened to some of your broadcast this evening. I enjoyed the discussion about the issues of how the workforce, men and African-American people in general view natural hair and locks. I wanted to share something that happened to me last Friday at work:

An employee from my agency came to visit me. We work on different floors, and I only just met this person a few months ago during a training. I had once went to his floor to see a picture of his wife and child, and jokingly told him to stop by my desk sometime.

During this brief visit, we chatted for a minute, and then he commented about the pictures on my desk. Although my hair is now locked, these are pictures of myself and my son when he was younger and I wore my hair straight. This employee, who is Jewish, asked, "Why do you wear your hair like that? Your hair looked much better straight!"

I informed him that I didn't feel that I had to do anything to imitate what society considers beautiful. I also told him that by telling me my hair would look better straight, he is also saying that I would be more attractive if I had blue eyes and blond hair. Then I asked him if he thought that all curvy women had to starve themselves and diet to be slender like me, even though God gave them the build they were meant to have, just like God meant for me to have nappy hair and a skinny build. I was really trying to help him understand my point of view, but the most disturbing thing is this:

This Jewish man is married to an AFRICAN woman. His wife is from Ghana and they have a beautiful daughter together. He mentioned that his wife went to a salon recently to get her hair straightened and was unhappy when she couldn't reproduce the same style at home.

I told him that I hope he isn't telling his wife that she "should" have straight hair, the same way he is telling her she "should" gain lots of weight. (He actually brags about how he nags his wife about her weight--she is naturally very slim, and lost all of the weight she had gained while pregnant and is still upset about it. I believe every woman should accept herself, and let others know that they have to accept her as well, whether she's skinny, curvy or somewhere in between!)

I have never met his wife, but I hope she is a strong person and will understand that she must find herself beautiful even when other people (her husband?) don't....

Yes, there was a suggestion for meeting on 2/26 and the question was posed to
interested parties (since many responded to the great idea of meeting) if the
date was good for all but it seems that people got caught up with WHERE we're
gonna meet and WHAT we're gonna eat WITHOUT FIRST establishing WHEN {if the date
was doable for everyone}. Only about 2 or 3 responded about being free on that
date out of the MANY who said they wanted to meet yet didn't mention anything
about their availability. So, who knows how this will come about?

Do you know anyone who braids?

Peace & Blessings,

I have just washed my hair so its in a soft afro, I need someone to braid the sides up into a Mo-Hauwk, I don't know the correct spelling for that (lol) but you get my drift. The catchy part is I need this done today/tonight or early early tomorrow morning, I have a gig in Connecticut tomorrow, sorry for such short notice, but I am in need, I know there are some Philadelphia people who can braid. Please Help

PS: I am an artist, so I'm not trying to spend a lot of money.

Thanks so much in advance for all your help.

As I am as well. First start from the inside out. Increase water intake.

Next, most of these so call product for natural hair is the same product for relaxed hair with just more oils, so don't believe the hype. Try pantee pro-v hydrating curls, I also use aloe Vera. Also cover your hair at night. the cotton in pillow slips can drain moisture form your hair like nothing else. Before i made the big chop. I visited Motowngirl.com and it helped me alot. Also, I have found this to be helpful to increase natural shine. Go to Walmart and get the 1000IU of Vit E and on wet hair once a month rub a small about along the shaft of your hair and it dries with a natural non greasy shine. Have a great day! Meredith

Hi Marcia~

I know you live in DC, but I'm sure you know of Silver Hill Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. I would love to refer to my loctician who is a professional and has her license and works out of her own home. Not only does she do Locs, but she also does natural hair styles as well. However the majority of her clientell are Loc clients. She wears Locs herself and has been Loced for about 8 years now. She's a deep sista who keeps it real and tells you like it is, whether you want to hear it or not. (speaking from my own experience, I was really pressing her out to color my hair when it wasn't healthy for that at the time, so she told me NO!) I honestly respected her for that because we made a deal that if I did what I needed to do as far as taking care of hair i.e. sleeping at night, drinking plenty of water, and such....then she wouldn't have a problem coloring my hair, which I did end up doing my part and she kept her word and did hers. Now I'm loving my colored Locs even more and
her as well for pushing me to handle what needed to be handled). My hair is healthy and beautiful!

My point is that I guess she and I have grown together as client and stylist and I think that is important with one you can trust with your hair. Sorry didn't mean to make this email so long.

My stylist name is: Denyse and her number is 301-456-1729
You can tell her that you were referred to her by Nia (she'll already know off hand!)

Re: thanks-Loc Origin Correction

2006-12-26 00:26:19

The "beginning" of locs is also sometimes attributed to India, who
were the first to write of locs, however it is difficult to put a
date on their origin because of the nature of locs themselves. My
feeling is that as long as woman has been in existance, she has been
wearing locs.

Re: [Naturally_You] thanks-Loc Origin Correction

2006-12-25 12:41:46

Locs have been around way before the estasblishment of Rastafarism. Rastafarism was named in 1935, just 70 years ago. Black people's hair naturally loc when allowed. Pictures can be found of women and men of the African Kukui and Masai Tribes, Ethiopiam Bahowtie Priest, and even King Tut, whose spiritual way of life was based on the Medue Neter, with locs thousands and thousands of years ago. The term "Dread" became a slang term for locs in 1970 when the Jamaican Gleaner printed an article calling locs worn by Rastas as being "dread-full"..."Dreadlocs" was and continues to be a degragotry term; meant to imply that those with knotted hair are all criminals and should be feared

RE: [Naturally_You] thanks

2006-12-25 05:16:38

Actually locs date back to the days where Africans practiced the ritual of Rastafarian. "Dreads" symbolized that an individual was "god fearing" and Dreadlocks were universally symbolic of a spiritualist's understanding that vanity and physical appearances are unimportant. Also they believed spiritual energies mainly exit the body through the top of the head and the hair. If the hair is knotted, they believe, the energy remains within the hair and the body, keeping a person more strong and healthy.

Thank you for having this info available. Here natural hair is an oddity. What is called "natural" are braids for women and locs for men. Unfortunately, most guys were turned on to locs in the "joint". Upon returning to us, they played roulette with products and stylists.

Now, I have had braids for years. My hair has grown to shoulder length. I have interviewed every "natural stylist" I can find. Ha! What stories I could tell you.

Since reading all your comments and testimonals I feel I'm not alone.

Thanks.

Witch Hazel instead of Sea Breeze?

Occasionally (about once a month) I use witch hazel on my scalp, not too often, but after reading about the dryness that may occur from Sea Breeze, I was wondering if the witch hazel is any safer.

Be careful with the Sea Breeze. The alcohol content can make your

I'm all for new ideas and ways to care for my natural hair (and of my teenaged son's, who is currently in the locking process).

Tobi-Velicia
e j <ejordan_emp@...

AWWWWW, I didn't mean to ruin your hair groove - there are really great products out there... so if your are looking for "all the way natural" you could find some amazing recipes on the internet ... save you shipping, money, doesnt take a long time and if you have kids or could borrow some one else's (teenager, even pre -schooler) it is a great way to spend time! I do this with young adults and children from time to time in the hood where I grew up and around the country. We get a chance to talk about life, and conquer tasks that we never knew that we'd be capable of (builds their self-esteem and confidence) Some times we selll these things to raise money. Infact, right now we have some children and adults we work with in Africa whom make products... we give them money in advance so they can go ahead and feed their families, and we sell their things in boutiques in various states - sometimes for school/church fundraisers- then with the majority of the profit we build
well, desks, schools and we provide medicine and food to poverty - stricken areas in South Africa, Tanzania, and many other places like that. Sorry for the long message - I am really pasionate about what I do ... I wake up and go to bed with africa and haiti on my mind ...couldn't help myself

Tobi-Velicia Johnson <tvelicia@...

Hi EJ--

Thanks for your email. I had just recently run out of the Verifen Complex shampoo and was planning on replacing it. And no, the shampoo didn't have a urine smell, it had a nice, light scent. However, I was alarmed to learn that the products were synthetic--I had used the products for years while my hair was relaxed. At that time, I was washing my hair 2-3 times a week to make it "look right". Now that my hair is locked, every two weeks my stylist washes and tightens it, and I wash it myself on the alternate weeks.

I never had anyone comment on the scent of my hair when I used the shampoo frequently for my relaxed hair. Actually people commented on how healthy it looked. Fortunately those same people like my locked hair better. Anyway, currently I use peppermint or lavender scented Jojoba oil on my hair now, so there is no shampoo scent at all.

Thanks to you, I am having second thoughts about using the Verifen products. It looks like I'm now shopping for new products as well!
e j <ejordan_emp@...

NOT trying to be rude, but I asked for a sample of the "verifin complex" and while her whole spill is interesting, They sent it to me - with no label (to warn me what was put in it) and it smelled like urine.. So I called and inquiredr with the guy there... he told me that it was a synthetic formula, man made, with a few natural ingrediants ... THAT THROUGH UP A RED FLAG WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!! I inquired because I was considering to help with product placement. However, I am a firm believer in "whatever works for you" - so if it is actually working for you then ... " MORE POWER 2 THA PEOPLE!" I understand that not everything is for everybody, totally. Wich brings me to a question I have for you ....Because of the smell, I didn't even temporarily expierement with it - and put in on my head! - I know that sometimes things can smell treacherous in the jar, but once applied and mixed woth your own chemicals from your body ...they make smell better, and v/s \ v/s .... so when you
use it .... does it still give off the same scent? or does it smell better? or does the smell vanish? HAs any1 commented on the scent of your hair? GOOD or BAD? I am seriously inquiring genuinely on this one. Again I am not meaning any harm.

Napturally Yours,

ej

Hi--

I know you said you wanted products that you could find at your local store, but I want to recommend a line of products that I have used. I was amazed at how soft and moisturized these products made my hair when it was relaxed, but now with natural (locked) hair the products work even better.

The website is called HairOil.com and the line is called Verifen Complex. The products cost somewhat more than what you would pay at a local store, but I think they are worth it.

Good luck with your search for the right hair products.

Re: I need of style info

Part your damp and oiled hair from ear to ear. Put the back in a
pony tail holder. Cornrow the front or have an auntie or cousin do
it. For the texture in the back, double strand twist or braid your
hair in half inch sections. Once your hair dries, probably
overnight, remove the twists/braids. Depending on the initial
texture of your hair, the texture will last 1-2 weeks. If you use a
setting lotion, it can last longer. Tie the front down with a satin
scarf, and put a bonnet over the back. You can also retwist or braid
the back at night to keep the texture going for longer.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I called the loctitian earlier this evening,
and she told me to use tea tree oil or an astringent and cotton
balls to cleanse my scalp in between the coils. I used Sea Breeze
(which is good for dandruff anyway), and it worked pretty well. I
used about ten cotton balls, and I saw a lot of dirt and oil come
off. I will try your method later when I can find a stocking cap to
fit my big head!

Hello members! My name is Markesa Turner (aka Ki Ki).I have only been
a part of this group for about a week but already I am excited to see
how everyone is willing to share their experiences and give great
tips on natural hair care! That's exactly what I am looking for.
About a year ago I decided to go natural and proceeded to twist my
hair myself to start the locking process. I was not satisfied with
the results so after about 7 months I cut them out and I've been
wearing my hair short with a texturizer ever since. I am now ready to
do the natural thing again and that is where my problem lyes.
Visually I know the style that i am interested in but i don't know if
there is a name for it. If any of you are familuar with Marsha from
the neo-soul group Floetry and Jill Scott then you have seen the
style that I am talking about. They where their hair braided in the
front, but loose in the back. I wouldn't classify this as a fro
because it seems to be a little on the curly side. Is there a name
for this style? Is it something that has to be done by a stylist, and
can i and if so how do i maintain it. I would greatly appreciate any
information and advice that anyone can give me. Thank you so much.

I need of style info

2006-12-22 04:19:27

Coloring the hair with permanent hair coloring is very drying as you have found out. You need a deep conditioning treatment using a heating cap or a bonnet drier, probably every week. For daily moisturizing I have had good luck with Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Lotion not the spray. Although you can use the spray for light use. You can find it in most beauty supply houses, like Sally"s. Good luck. Valerie

Re: [Naturally_You] Loc(k)ing with comb coils

2006-12-19 09:43:54

I started my locs 3 years ago with comb coils. I had very coarse hair so it really didn't unravel much (I say had because 4 years of no chemicals and my hair is so soft now)...Anyway, I waited about 3 weeks to wash my hair (I never went back to the beauty shop once they put the coils in) and then I got in the shower with a stocking cap on and lathered up my head with the stocking cap on. The few coils that unraveled in the back for first few times I washed it, I just put a little water based gel on in, twisted and held it down with a hair clip until it dried.
I hope this helps.
Peace,
Yvette

Re: [Naturally_You] loc alternatives

Greetings all.

I have 3-4 year old locs that have changed from lovely full coils to tight dry yarn like extensions. I'm really considering cutting. But I'm really at a loss for styling alternatives.

I do not want to keep a fro. If I cut I may have one for a minute, but my hair grows fairly quick. And So far the prices I've seen for the NYC stylist are totally out of my range , esp at 2x per month. But I need to have a nice professional cute style. Any recommendations. I do not want braids. I want to give my hair a rest from the tight coils for awhile.

any advice on a reasonable natural stylist or options is appreciated.

Re: Sister with TWA needs advice....

2006-12-16 16:28:24

Hazelpone,
I am so sorry to hear you lost your locs. My advice to you is to not
loc your hair for awhile. You need to get to the root of why your
hair came out in the first place. It is unusual for large number of
locs to fall out with no explanation.
Check the medications (including birth control and/or over the
counter meds) to see if hair loss is a side effect. If you can, go
to a dermatologist and see if you have a scalp condition. Try to
find a stylist that has been doing natural hair for a long time(10 years or
more), someone who
specializes in the overall health of your hair beyond styling. They
may be able to give you more insight on why you lost your hair.
Hormones can also play a part. If you are getting older/"going
through the change", or just having some hormonal issues this could
cause thinning. Do you have any other health problems that may
contribute to hair thinning and/or hair loss?
If you were not getting your maintenance often enough that could be
the problem. Ask your stylist for more answers about this - has she
ever seen this happen before? I am a bit surprised that she didnt
try joining your locs before cutting them all off, but of course I
don't know the exact extent of the damage.
Take a look at your diet. Are you drinking enough water, eating lots
of fruits and vegetables, taking vitamins if you need to?
Please take your time before getting locs again. Short natural hair
is one of the most flattering styles we can wear, and I really don't
want to see you go through the hair loss again.
Good luck,
KC

I checked out the Red Bamboo's website, and I think I've eaten some of
their food before. I'm open to it, but if there are other restaurants
that are vegan-friendly but have meat/chix/fish on the menu, I would
be more receptive to that. I think Indian or Greek food would be an
excellent idea. I live in Queens, so going to Jackson Heights for
some Indian would be a good choice for me. But again, I'm open.

Sister with TWA needs advice....

2006-12-16 04:18:59

Hello all,
I went to get my hair tighented up, and my Sisterloc's consultant noticed
large areas where locs were gone, they had just fallen out! I had also
noticed this, and asked her to look closely at my hair, as it felt like locs
were missing, but the new-growth was too wild for me to be sure, the
consultant confirmed it.
She told me I needed to cut it all off and start over. UGH! She cut, 12
inches of locs, I cried and now I have a TWA. I have 2 inches of hair that
looks like 1/2 inch because of shrinkage. I did get my hair trimmed so it
will grow out nice and even.
I am supposed to see her in about a month to start SL's again, but am not
sure that this is the best option. I am trying to decide if I should go
back to SL's, or maybe try something else, like traditional locs, or one of
the temporary styles until I get more length and can make a more confident
decision. I can't do extensions, because they dry my hair and the chemicals
bother me.
Here is my problem: I had major issues with lint and product buildup. Even
now, with my TWA, I have to be careful to check my hair, as it seems to want
to cling to everything! Also, I am still dealing with major dryness issues.
These two things, that are easy for most to deal with, have been especially
difficult for me, as I don't tolerate 'oils' very well and am still looking
for something I like that will moisturize and not irritate. As for the
lint, like I said, even with my TWA, I am having to pull out the occasional
tiny piece, as my hair wants to grab onto everything, I do believe it is
because of the dryness. I have checked my dryer and keep the house dusted,
I don't see an extreme amount around the house, but if there is anything, it
gets in my hair! This is why I am concerned about starting locs again, at
least until I get my dryness issues dealt with.
Right now, I am mostly concerned about having a style that I can wash 2
times a week without having to worry about the style coming undone, but can
also be taken down, let's say every 4-6 weeks at most. I would like the
style to look nice, as I am keeping my head with a scarf when I go out, and
would like to wear 'my hair' when I go out, but am not really feeling such a
short afro. I see some beautiful styles that are very short and natural,
but am not sure about being able to wash it when I want, etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
God bless,
Hazelpone

Kinky Twist Up doos

2006-12-14 21:00:07

I just got my Kinky Twist done yesterday. They're a little below my
shoulder and I love them. My wonderful stylist told me not to limit
myself to styles especially up doo's because I'm a dance instructor
and she said that they would last longer if I where them up a lot!
Does anyone have any pics of any up doos with Kinky Twist? She
showed me many styles but I don't remember many of them. Thanks!

them my self but I haven't figured out how.
I apprechate any suggestions. I am ready to go but a wig!

Salons/Stylists in the Philadelphia and Surrounding Area

2006-12-13 23:08:31

Hello!
My name is DaVetta and I'm new to the Naturally You!group. I've
been natural (not locked) for the last 5 1/2 yrs. Over the years,
I've had my hair done at several natural salons, however, I find it
hard to find one that consistently offers the "best" products for my
hair and at the same time, advises/educates me about my hair. If
anyone knows of any salons/stylists in the Philadelphia and/or
surrounding area that offers these services (and not jsut for the
consultation), please let me know.
Thanks,
DaVetta

I love my hair

2006-12-13 18:32:41

I just wanted to tell everyone how much I love my hair. I am in transition right now and I have about 2 1/2 inches of natural hair, however my hair is in kinky twist right now. I've had to educate my boyfriend in the beauty of natural hair and at first he was a little reluctant because I had long permed hair. As he's rode along on this journey he has begun to develop his own love for natural hair, from appreciating his own, to loving mine. So anyways, I usually put oils on my scalp and about two days ago I had sprayed my head with some rosemary and lavender oil mixed with some distilled water. I normally keep my hair in a ponytail but lately when I go to sleep at night I have allowed it to be loose. Well early this morning when he came in from work, he got in the bed and he kept nuzzling his nose in the top and the back of my head. And it's funny because he did this for almost 15 minutes, until he got real still. So, I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was
almost sleep and that was hair was relaxing him. He told me that he got enveloped in the scent of my hair and scalp and the way the twist were falling on his face. My permed hair has never done that. (I know the Lavender is what was relaxing him).

What are some "No Poo" conditioners?

2006-12-13 07:53:58

Hello All,

I was reading what you all had to say about the "no poo" method, and it sounds pretty interesting. I think I am going to have to try it, but I would like to know what are some conditioners I could try. I had been thinking about changing my current condition anyway. Thanks for the help.

Re: [Naturally_You] No POOers'

2006-12-12 22:53:26

C Bryant et al other no POOers'

What conditioner are you using? and how often do you wash and are you using this method with locs or braids or what kind of hair?

Thanks,

mori j

I've been using the no poo method for 3 months, and it has done wonders for my hair. I used to think that I NEEDED shampoo in order for my hair to be clean, but instead, it was the exact opposite. When I used shampoo, (along with a lot of other products), I noticed that my hair constantly had build-up, that I could not get rid of. Now, using only conditioner, my hair doesn't have any build-up, and it is SUPER shiny! I also noticed that my hair is much stronger and healthier than it was before. If shiny hair wasn't a deciding factor for using the no poo method, then healthy hair should be. I know we all want that!

Yes, "Pressing" Can Be Permanent!/Andrea

2006-12-12 12:07:06

Hey Andrea!

Yes, I agree that natural hair is very, very versatile, yet at the same time, if it's going to thrive, it needs a lot of TLC as well! I've been natural for 1 year now, and I'm still learning about my hair! Have you ever tried having straight weaved hair "sewn" in when you wanted the straight look? It can be soooo much less damaging to natural hair than the thermal styling method!

Tanya
ANDREA WEBBER <dreawebber@...

Tanya

You are absolutely right! I have extremely course hair. Which dries very very quickly. Meaning that I have to always use hair dresses and conditioners in it to keep it from breaking. This is a part of my life like brushing my teeth. When I have to press it it takes extreme heat in order for it to become straight. And as far as perms go....they never did my hair any good.

My hair always fell out. I've opted to use the thermal pressing for versitility. Sometimes I like to wear braids, sometimes i like to wear it out and sometimes I like to wear it straight. As long as I keep it conditioned anyway I wear it is good. (with the execption of having a perm in it)
Tanya <artisticme2001@...

Hello Andrea!

Maybe your hair was not excessively "overheated", or pressed "bone-straight" so-to-say. Also, what is the texture of your hair? Everyone's hair texture is different, and many of us have several different textures on our heads, that range from tightly coiled, to curly, to a loose curl, wavy, tightly waved, or even kinda straight. This could also have something to do with it too. As it was explained to me by a natural hairstylist, if you have thick or medium hair, when you use heat or do a chemical service on it, namely relaxing, because thicker hair has more layers, you might actually loose a layer or two and not necessarily break it all the way down. Fine hair however, is missing a layer or two. My hair is fine, so when it was pressed, and excessive heat was used in my especially fine area like the nape of my neck, then it changed the structure or bonds in my hair there. This could also explain why this phenomenom doesn't happen to everyone's hair. I certainly,
however, have heard of this happening to several other people before.

Tanya
Meredith Talford <lade_lyon@...

My hair did. Not my entire head of hair, but along the neck line and across the front. My hair WILL NOT kink curl nap whatever I call it it has stayed completely straight. I am forced to believe that it is possible to "train" or break the bond in hair to change it's natural texture, because it has happend to me. I have be free from relaxer for over a year. I did not let it grow out. It was cut completely out. Oh well to each it's own. Have a great day!

Thanks,

ANDREA WEBBER <dreawebber@...

I've been reading the responses and have to agree with the fact that we have the most versitle hair. But I really have to disagree with the permanently straight thing. I've been wearing my hair in its natural form for the past two years. And before that I didn't get a perm in my hair till I was well into my twenties. So for about twenty years or so I've been doing the press and curl thing. MY HAIR NEVER STAYED STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!! When I washed it it went right back to the kink (or the tight curl which ever you prefer). And now that I'm wearing it natural again it still does the same thing as before. The only time I was ever able to hold a press (hair staying straight) iswhen it was cold outside. but as soon as I washed it it was back to the beginning. Please tell me how would the hair stay straight if we are not perming it?

Yes heat does dry out the hair. Anyone who lives south of Pennsylvania can attest for that. But I have never seen anyones hair stay straight from a comb.

Re: [Naturally_You] Hello - New to the Group--Aveda Products

2006-12-10 21:24:56

Hi--

I used to use Aveda products when my hair was relaxed. (Thank goodness I'm loc'ed now!) The products made my hair soft, even when fried from the use of relaxer. I'm sure the products will work well for natural hair.
"S. Stewart" <daqueen70@...

Thanks, Diane for the info. Which herbs do you use? Also, has anyone used Aveda products?

Diane <dianejmartin@...

Hi Senitra,
I'm sorry that I only have an answer for your 2nd question and not your 1st. I used to horde stuff as a typical product junkie and realized that of all the essential products to put on your hair, the most basic is water. This cannot be over-emphasized because we don't use enough of it to replenish our bodies as well as our scalp. Just like your throat gets dry and thirsty on a daily basis, so does your scalp. What happens when we don't get quenched - we become dehydrated. The same goes for the scalp. I don't just use water, though, I also utilize herbs. I boil it in water then pour it in a spray bottle and use it as a mist. You're getting two good deals for the price of one - the benefits of the herbs and the hydration/moisture of water. It wasn't my intention for this to be so long, sorry about that. Anyway, hope this helps!

[Naturally_You] Natural Hair Salons + NYC meal

2006-12-10 15:27:38

I live in Harlem and would love to meet the NYC crew. When and where? Hopefully, a spot with lots of veggie options.

smiles [INLINE]
kinky_rootz ,

After I've gotten a referral to a salon/hair care professional, I visit to see if it is clean, gossipy, comfortable, and I really take the following into consideration:

I have had my hair "done" in both home and salon settings and I've learned that space and personality are very important to me. The mental and physical trauma of pressing and perming that so many of us believe we must endure to have "nice, beautiful, straight," hair is lot to overcome.

It may take two+ years for chemically treated hair/scalp to return to its normal/natural state (after 8 years, mine is still not quite what I remember as a child). It may take even longer for the individual to learn to accept, care for, style and love. Getting over that trauma and learning to see beauty where the mainstream denies its existence and embracing my own evolution takes concerted effort. Its a spiritual journey.

I stated all that to point out the importance, for me, of making sure that the salon only provides "natural" hair care and no perms or other chemical treatments. I now find spaces where they press, curl, perm, etc., very oppressive. And I stay far from them. So a space where they do locs/braids AND perms is out for, me. I expect to be surrounded by pictures and books/magz. that cater to the art of natural art care. Generally, I expect a smoke-free salon or home (I've met several very talented natural hair stylists that work from their home).

And I have to have a good "vibe" about the hair care professional. Does this person take care of their own hair? Do they enjoy their work? Are they creative, gentle, open (share or explain how the client care for the hair/style)? Is this a very chatty person or spot?are they willing to style? Personally, I think anyone working with your body, esp. the crown imparts their energy to you. So this is very important to me.

I know this sounds like a lot, but reclaiming your natural beauty is a journey. once you find the "right" person/salon its worth the effort.

What do you expect when you visit a natural hair salon? What are
some of the things you look for when you visit or look for in a

I wasn't offended at all. In fact, it really was a good "scientific" website. The eurocentric views illustrated on that site are no reflection on you. I did find one picture of a African-American woman with natural hair, and the caption was complimentary.

I'm glad you mentioned the site--I did learn something from it.
