Re: Yes, "Pressing" Can Be Permanent!

Your hair won't necessarily fall out, but it will be damaged and may
break off. It will also have a straighter texture than the rest of
your hair(the part that is not damaged, or the new hair that grows
in). The damaged hair will not "go back", "revert", "shrink", etc
when water is added - it will just stay straight, permanently.

Here is a link to a really good website that has lots of scientific info. on hair, and it speaks in detail about what heat damage is and how it occurs: http://www.pg.com/science/haircare/hair_twh_73.htm

Now my question is once the bond is broken what happens then? Your
hair strats to fall out? You will no longer have a fro? What
actually happens after the coils are damaged? Permenantly straightin
meaning what you'll be bald? Or will you have a mixture of straight
and nappy once the new growth grows in?

I have used BBD's glass for my clients and to me it is excellent for
cornrows and twists. It is similar to a holding gel but it's a cream. I love
it and it comes in a variety of scents. It really controls frizzies or fly
aways.

Hey Tina,

Have you ever visited Nappturality.com? They have a lot of info and tips. You can also see some of the Sista's hair albums which include do it yourself styles (it is a really nice place to visit). Have you ever accessorized your fro with flowers, scarves, barrettes, that can be really pretty too. I can't wait until I have a big fro! [INLINE] Good luck on your journey! [INLINE]

Hi Tina,

I am a Naturalist in Nashville, TN and I find alot of the sites listed very informative on up to date styles and information regarding our natural hair, so check it out:

www.naani.com

www.naturalhair.org

www.essenceofbraiding.com

I find these sites to be very informative and they have products, books, and videos that you can purchase. The first one has a chat room you can go to and chat with others who may be experiencing the same thing you are. There are a lot of options you can try such as two strand twists, senegalese twists, a twist out (curly/crinkly fro), cornrows, micros, single braids, or even locs. There's so much that we can do with our hair so please don't feel that you are limited!

I hope this helps and good luck on your journey.

Hi,

Thank you for the positive response. I know locing our hair is a natural thing but I feel like I'm going in a circle again. This product here, this product there. I was starting to build up a little hair store again similar to when I had relaxed hair. I I started my locs in Aug 04 and I trying to deal with the frizzies. In Dec I decided to latch my locs. Re: Dye and Natural Hair

2006-11-26 06:26:15

I dyed my hair with Clairol Texture & Tones Bronze hair color. I
thought it was slightly safe since it contained no ammonia.
Thankfully, it didn't do any damage. I was desperate to color my
hair because at that time I was in that 2-3" length stage of hair
growth and if I hadn't done something, I would have relaxed it. When
this color grows out, I will probably color again but I do not plan
on doing this any time soon or often. But then again, I may not
color. I hear what you say so it may just be best for me to live
with my own hair color and be happy about it.

My loctician has trained me to use either Witch Hazel or Sea Breeze. Take the product on a cotton swab and gently clean the scalp. Afterwards, I use a combination of olive oil, castor oil, rosemary and tea tree oil and lightly oil my scalp. It works really well.

Dye and Natural Hair

2006-11-24 07:35:08

I used to think that coloring my natural hair was safe, because I
thought my natural hair was 10 times as strong as my permed hair.
After more research and experience, I found that this is not 100%
true. Natural hair is indeed healthier and more elastic than permed
hair, and double processing is always a no-no. But, natural coily
hair is also very fragile because of the curl pattern, the cuticle
lifts up and needs to be constantly hydrated and nourished to have
it lay smooth. I lost a lot of my 70's style big fro after
overprocessesing my hair with dye. Of course, I tried about 4
different shades in 1 year too. I highly recommend going to a
colorist, with experience with natural hair if you really must color
your hair. If you do it at home, please do it once, and pay extra
close attention to the health of your hair after that. If you are
working with a TWA and plan to cut the dyed part out when you get
tired of it, that is probably better. BUT, you still need to be
careful of chemical burns and damage to the scalp itself from the
chemicals.
HTH,
KC

Re: Yes, "Pressing" Can Be Permanent!

It is the heat, not the tool used to deliver the heat, that can
cause the damage to your hair. Over blowdrying with a very hot
blowdryer can also cause damage. Once or twice a year is not
excessive in my opinion, however it only takes once to break those
bonds.

Thanume,
This is a great technique if you want to elimate the need to use gels(any
products) on your hair or palm rolling/finger rolling. My stylist used a
'similar' technique with my hair. I started my locs Oct 27, 04. I absolutely
love my hair. I don't do anything except keep it clean with Dr.Bronners in
between visits. I use AloeLife's aloe vera gel on it sometimes to tame frizzes
on the end , something spray my hair with distilled water and lightly twist
(this again is just to tame the frizzies). I tie on a satin scarf and the next
morning I'm good to go!
I can send you pics if you want to see the progression of my locs.

The amount of time it takes for your hair to loc depends on its thickness and texture. I think the locing process can take from just a few months to a year. Also you may notice different sections of your hair locing at different rates.

Try to be patient--locing is an interesting process. In this group, you'll find lots of tips and encouragement.

Congratulations on starting your locs.

Tobi
How long did it take for your hair to loc? I started my locs on July 16th and just the back has started to loc. How can you tell if the hair strands are really loced or locking?

Hi Thanume~

I haven't heard a whole lot about "latchhooking locs", but I have heard from atleast three different locticians to say that while it looks neat, pretty, and gives you that well groomed finished look.........that in the long run" it's not good for your own hair with the pulling and it somewhat weakens your hair, later on down the line. This of course was said from professionals with licenses, but then again, each head is different and some stronger than other to withstand. There are some sites out there referring to latchhook locs as well.

Good luck,
Nia

Hi Icaren!

I think that most "naturals" can attest to having several different hair textures/types going on. I know I do! The best advice that I have now is what I know from experience, and what I have always been told MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE, and then MOISTURIZE some more. There are sooooooo many really good natural moisturizers for the hair now, that one just has to be right for you! A few suggestions that I have are: olive oil, shea butter, aloe vera, and the list goes on, and on. Hope this helps some!

What if you curl it with a curling iron? What i an trying to say is .... Will it permenantly straightin out if you Tie your hair down after putting wax in it, and brushing it down....AND then when it dries .... curl it with a curling iron? I am asking because I have literally watched my cousin do this --- when she wants to sew tracks in her hair (aka do a different look) ... Please get back to me ... I 'd like to tell her, if you think it'll be permanant, she puts in straight hair . maybe once or twice a year.
ny_magazine <Kaya@...

Just about everyone here is on the right track - pressing
(straightening) your hair with a hot comb can cause it to stay
straight - PERMANENTLY! Please think twice before pressing your
precious coils, especially if it is just for a trim. You can get a
decent trim at a barber shop, OR, braid or twist your hair in small
sections, and just snip the ends off. Every 2 or 3 months is more
than enough. The sister who said the heat breaks the bonds was
right. Once those bonds are broken, no more nap.
If you think this has already happened to your hair, camoflaugue the
best you can, nurture that part of your hair even more so than the
rest. You can do braid outs, twist outs, etc and have a fairly
uniform texture. It should still be able to hold a set(on rollers or
in braids) even though it appears straight.
Good luck,
KC

Wow that is really weird, If your Mom just pressed your hair with the hot comb with out any chemical, it should have went back to natural when you washed it. Maybe you can wash it and while the shampoo is still in try teasing it with the comb. But I don't have any other clues as to what you can do to get your fro back. But when you want to trim next time, go to barber they are experience with working with natural hsir and they will have no problem trimming it for you. [INLINE]

Hey Meredith!

I am sooooo sorry to hear that you too have the same problem that I had several months ago when I got my hair professionally pressed and trimmed! I don't know a whole 'lot about this phenomenom, however I've heard a couple of others say that they have had the same experience. I do know that too much heat from thermal styling can kinda "break the bonds" of the hair, kinda like what a perm does, and can permanently change the hair. I beleive it was back in Oct. '04 when I got my hair pressed and trimmed, and the little section in the back at the nape of my neck that was affected is just starting to curl back up, however it's still on the straight side. How would you describe your hair texture? Mine is on the fine side, so I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not. I hope that you can get your hair back the way you want it. Hang in there, and don't give up on your natural hair!

Re: Help Me!

2006-11-20 17:05:25

I've only pressed my hair once in the time that I've been natural
(about 3 years)and fortunately, my hair went back to it's kinky
state after I washed it. But, I was just in a shop yesterday and
the stylist there was telling me how natural hair can be "trained"
to maintain straightness. She said many of her clients no longer
get perms, but just come in for a blow dry, press-n-curl on a
regular basis. There's a woman at my job who goes to the shop every
two weeks and I just knew she had relaxed hair, but come to find out
she's been without a perm for a couple of years now. I can't even
imagine her hair turning into a fro when it gets wet (not that she
would let it, though). Maybe your hair is temporarily shocked??...I
think the twists are a good idea for the time being (don't do
anything drastic), but I hope someone here will have more insight
b/c I'm curious, too (I need to get my ends clipped something
terrible and pressing was my first option).

Re: [Naturally_You] Hair Color

2006-11-20 12:11:20

Hi Shamieka--

I would suggest getting hair color that is ammonia-free and peroxide-free. One good thing about natural hair is that you can experiment with color, without too much worry about damage from using color. Breakage and dryness tends to occur most when hair is both colored and relaxed/chemically-treated.

I've heard that henna is a good color option, but I don't know much about it. My loc-stylist uses Bigen hair color on my locs.

Hope I've helped just a little--I'm sure you'll get tons of good advice from the group.

Re: lint + build up.

2006-11-19 18:22:50

You can soak your locs in ACV + warm water, or lemon juice + warm
water. this can help to dislodge some of the lint. Watch out for
drying and lightening when using these methods - follow up with a
good hair oil.
Don't dry your hair with a towel - just ring it out with your hands.
Winter hats can get lint in your hair, as well as winter scarves.
Even sitting with your head against the back of the couch can get
lint in your hair. A satin cap will help protect your hair with this.
For a good head covering while sleeping, try the LB Soc at
http://denisereed.com They are one of our advertisers, and I bought
one of the "socs". It fits well and does not come off at night. It
is made of something like wavecap material, and designed in a way
that doesn't have any big knots digging into your scalp, pulling
hair, and sliding off.

Thanks all,for your advice about oiling the hair and scalp. I've got a new question about LInt.

Somehow, recently my locs have drawn tighter (they used to be very soft and springy) Now, I've found pathches of lint and buildup in the locs on the side and back, esp. It seems impossible to get out. What to do?

I have a few silk scarves and bonnets that I wear to sleep, but they do not seem to make it through the nite. And I've started to rinse with vinegar +H2O, again to help eith the build up.

any advice?

Re: [Naturally_You] dry hair/the easy solution

2006-11-18 22:48:11

Happy new year to everyone in the group. I find that above all of the great products that are out there that aid in the softening of the hair, that a simple oil treatment on a regular schedule does the trick. You don't necessarily have to go under the dryer, if you put a plastic cap on and wrap a towel over your head for 15 minutes your body heat will supply all the heat needed. It's also important to remember with natural hair (especially when you have locs) to supply the oil to the loc or hair shaft itself because that is were the oil is needed. When hair is tightly coiled it is harder for the oil to move from the scalp down the hair shaft and that's were the oil treatment comes in. Actually less oil is needed by the scalp unless you have excessively dry scalp or a dandruff condition because the natural oils that come from your scalp will indeed nourish that part of your head. You don't want to make a mistake and do the opposite to your scalp which is make it overproduce
oil creating in some cases oily or problem skin. That is why I tell my customers using a spray type oil on the scalp 3 times a week and having an oil treatment once a month is more than enough. Sorry for the long note.

Help! Looking for a natural hairstylist in Chicago

2006-11-17 16:18:42

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, but I can't wait to join in. I've been
natural for almost 3 years now and I'm getting to the point where I
feel like I can't do anything with it. I'm in Chicago and as
surprising as it may sound I have yet to find a really good natural
hairstyle in this big city. If there are any others here from
Chicago, please let me know if you know of anyone that can work
with "mature" natural hair (e.g., it's long, thick, and kinky--hours
of fun!). Either a shop or out of their home.

Harbari Gani All!!!

I'm a 2nd time loc 'er this time for 4 years. and I love all the Kuumba (Creativity) I've found through loc'ing. I also love the positivity and sharing on this list.

From Atl to NYC now growing my 2nd set of locs (now Mid-shoulder length) I would love some advice.

1st -- I have a Sista Friend in ATL that has watched my growth from perm to natural to braids, loc's twists, Fro's and back. She always said that she did not like the braids, but I've watched her evolve and now . . . she braids her " too nappy, too, tight, too bad" hair and is even considering going natural.

I really want to encourage and support my Sis in her journey (that she does not even realize she's undertaken). Could any one recommend a stylist in ATL that is good with explaining transitions and very patient. I'm from the ATL, but out of the loop.

Also, I thank you for the discussion and tips on moisturizing. Lately my hair has been very dry and my skin extremely itchy. I've tried shea, coconut oil. honey, tea tree and any number of concoctions. Still working on it. So now I'll try the flax seed oil.

I've informed my friends about this listserve. I would love to meet the NYC crew, if there is a gathering in the coming year!

Blessings,

Moriba

To simplify it - no poo is shampooing the hair with conditioner instead of "shampoo." There are too many harsh chemicals in shampoo and it dries the hair out. Try some of the natural hair care websites. They are more detailed with it. www.motowngirl.com, www.roshini.net, www.nappturality.com. I made my own oil concotion. It's coconut, vitamin e, lavendar (for scent) and, girl, some other stuff that I cant even think of right now. I have to go look at my label at home and then I can tell you more. Email me: ms_nlewis@.... But, one thing is for sure, whatever all of that other stuff is, it sure does my hair pretty fine.

I've had problems with itchy scalp and dandruff, does anyone have suggestions. I've been uing 100% natural shea butter on my hair and scalp. A month ago I started spraying my scalp with a rosemary and tea tree itchy scalp soothe-it helps a little. The last time I washed my hair I used a newly purchased shower filter that removes chlorine and lead. My scalp is still itchy.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

it with the conditioner. I'm saying that because I've heard that, that
cuts down on flaking. I just stopped using the shampoo. I really love

I've only done it once. I will do it again this week.

Remedy for Dry Hair and Skin

2006-11-14 11:39:00

I've used an oil called Jojoba Oil. It's a light, unscented oil
that's excellent for both hair and skin. It absorbs quickly, too.
I currently have two bottles of the oil with scented essential oil
added. One bottle of Jojoba oil is scented with Peppermint and the
other is scented with Lavendar.

Since its winter time in Chicago. I bathe at night and wake up with
itchy dry skin. No matter how much I oil up at night. I wake up with
dry skin. During my sleep I sweat the oil or lotion right off.
Can anyone help! I have a humidifier and I run that at night, but my
skin is still dry in the morning. I hate waking up with soaked
sweaty PJ's.
Will shea butter help my skin and not make me sweaty at night?
Or can anyone recommend some lotion that will help me.

Re: [Naturally_You] I know this is a hair site.... but

2006-11-13 19:52:59

shea butter should help but you may need to nourish your skin from the inside
out perhaps just by drinking more fluids (namely water or fresh squeezed fruit
and vegetable juices ) during the day. Do you suffer from dehydration at all?
Are you oiling your skin while it's stil damp - that is supposed to lock in
moisture. -Janise in Philly

pictures, and I have been natural since November 2002 (I cut my hair
again in frustration a year ago). I am not very pleased with the
length of my hair; it seems to grow way too slowly and very unevenly
(longer in front than in back). My two strand twists aren't even
shoulder-length yet, and I desperately want then to be, in time for
my college graduation in '06. As I mentioned before, I am a student,
so I don't have lots of money to spend on products...Any suggestions?

Re: [Naturally_You] Rastas mango lime twist and loc gel....question

2006-11-12 10:50:07

I don't use beeswax in my salon. I find that it picks up a lot of dirt and lint (and anything else) that is floating in the air. Not to mention it gets on pillowcases and ruins clothing. It also has a very sticky gooey type feel that doesn't feel natural. I do use some of the Jamaican mango and lime products that don't have beeswax and I find that they work well. I use the gel made for gray and hard to lock hair. It is a white color versus the yellow color that can cause a film on your hair after drying. I also use the setting lotion and definitely the no itch spray. I spray it on my clients and they also spray it on at home coming closer to the time for them to come to their next appointment. I would recommend this product for all hair types.

Hi, you probably need a long-term transition style that allows your
hair to rest and grow. Believe me, the natural hair will grow and
you'll notice it after a while. You could try braids (with
extensions) or twists ( with kinky hair or yarn) as options and
these will last for about 1mth each time depending on care. With
braids you can wash your hair ( maybe every fortnight or so) and use
herbal cleansers and oils. Your natural hair isn't going to grow
dramatically to your shoulders in 5 mths, so be patient. A
transition hairstyle such as braids is versatile, neat, and allows
you the time to think about hair choices you'll make once you do
the 'big chop'. I used full weaves (bohemian outre curly hair) as my
transition style and I was able to wear it for 8 weeks at a time
without having to constantly worry about my hair growing, office
policy, etc. If you go to 'http://public.fotki.com/nisajathiyah/'

Hey all,

Don't know if I am doing this right. Hope I am, kinda new to the site. I am hoping to get some advice about my hair. I haven't had a perm in about 21/2 years, and love my natural hair. But, every so often I get tempted because I run out of styles to wear my hair. I flirted with straightening my hair this past may, and I absolutely hated it! I have washed my hair plenty of times since then, but half of my hair is still straight! I don't know what to do. I have been cutting my hair my self, y'know clipping the ends, but it just seems as though my hai's not growing or I really don't know what. any advice?

God bless,

Re: [Naturally_You] Nikki-website

2006-11-09 05:07:21

Hi,

Myriam - thank you for the website. You know, something very interesting has happened to my hair. I have been using the no poo method and I have made up my own oils for my hair. I also did a hot oil treatment last week for the first time ever!!!! I loved it. Well, anyway, my hair is a twa, but in the back it has gotten straight. Not perm straight, but there is no curl. My hair was never like that before and I have had a natural off an on too many times. Now it's on and it is not going off anymore. My hair is much softer and when I use the oil I made it actually looks moisturized. It is quite beautiful. I never saw that before when I wore it short (or when it grew out). It was hard and no matter how much oil I put in it, it either still looked dry or just hard as a rock!!!! Or just like too much goop in it. Now, the top, front, and sides aren't straight like the back, but it is soft and the curl is looser, but it really looks really pretty and groomed. But, I
must say, I'm a bit worried about this straight stuff in the back. I don't want to trade the no poo method for anything. I love it (though I used to think - Yuk! before I tried it), but I want to lock my hair eventually. Will it lock? I mean will it look crazy as it grows out even if I don't lock it? What's going on!!!

Also, that flake problem I was having a bit ago - it's gone!!! ALL RIGHT!!!! [INLINE] ! But, again, what about this straight stuff? My dads' hair is kind of like that. Not straight, but a very loose curl, but mine was never like that before. Any ideas about this?

My question is what is the difference between Sisterlocs and just
Locs, is the difference in the method used to loc the hair? And if
there is a difference what method is considered best?
One final question, I live in a rather small town in Ohio, close to
the city of Columbs, is anyone familiar with a salon that
specializes in natural hair in the area OR someone trained in the
Sisterloc method?
Thank you all for your wisdom and guidance.

Re: Locs Vs Sisterlocs

2006-11-08 06:12:27

Hello,
For a list of Sisterlocks consultants and trainees, as well as more
info on Sisterlocks, visit www.Sisterlocks.com.
There are actually more than 2 ways to create locs, but for the sake
of argument I will just talk about coils vs Sisterlocks.
Neither way is better, but each way has its advantages and
disadvantages.
Sisterlocks
* Take a long time to do initially, I have heard up to 11 hours for
long hair
* More expensive intitiation, usually several hundred dollars
* Can break more easily if done too thin
* Need to be put in and maintained by a Sisterlocks consultant, or
you can take a class to maintain them
* Have recommended products associated with them, but do not require
products to stay tightened
* Washing, working out, or swimming can be done sooner - the
interlocked pattern makes them less vulnerable to unravelling
* Good for "hard to loc" hair
Traditional Locs (started with coils)
* Take 1-2 hours to initiate, give or take depending on the stylist
* Cost about $60-$100 to initiate
* May be prone to unravelling
* Can be maintained at home with no training
* Most hair types need products to hold the twist
Both types of locs can be maintained every 2-6 weeks, and cost about
the same amount for maintenance, around $60 depending on length,
texture, and stylist.
I'm sure there is more to it than that, but I hope this gets you
started.

Yarn locs

2006-11-06 01:08:28

I am attempting today to do "yarn locks" in my hair ... it has been 10 years since I'd braided anything in my hair! (lil nervous) I have done "silky dreads" on a lil girls head B4 (bout 4 years ago) no wait (6 years ago) in other words ... If you have anytips, suggestions...etc .... and even words of encouragement - NOW WOULD BE THE PERFECT TIME!

Khoret Amen Oil

2006-11-05 21:33:05

I read about Khoret Amen Oil in catalog -- Carol's Daughter. According to the information, the various oils would cause some hair growth. I am a dred head now for 6 years. I love LOVE my dreds. They are a decent lenght, but I want more. Because I do study essential oils somewhat, I know that the oil would be healthy for my hair. But I would like to see some growth as well..... any one heard of it or better yet used it.

Sisterlocks

2006-11-05 19:36:00

Greetings to everyone!
I'm new to Naturally_You@... and I'm pleased
to be a part of a circle filled with positive sistas.
I've been natural for a long time, and am now
considering locking my hair. I'm doing a little
research on "Sisterlocks" and would like to hear from
anyone in the group who is currently wearing them. I'm
interested in any feedback regarding what the
experience has been thus far with wearing Sisterlocks.
Also, if there are any Certified Sisterlock
Consultants in the group, I'd be interested in hearing
from you as well. I'm giving thought to learning the
Sisterlocks method, and want to know what that process
was like for you?
Thank you in advance!!

Re: hello- from newbie

2006-11-05 02:45:53

Hi--
Like you, I am new to this message board. I just wanted to write
and offer you encouragement in your quest to become natural. My
hair is now locked, but it took a long time to enpower my self to
make that decision.
My long hair was relaxed, and I didn't feel like ready to cut my
hair and start from "scratch". I had the relaxed hair cut to about
shoulder-length and then had my relaxed hair done in two-strand
twists. The new growth locked as it grew out. Once I felt that my
natural, locked hair was "long enough" (about past my ears), I cut
off the relaxed twists.
As of February 2005, I will have had locs for two years. My locs
are now past my chin and somewhat layered, and the ends are colored
a honey brown shade. I love my hair this way and I'm pleased with
my decision.
I no longer have to worry about "bad hair days" with locs. I
normally tie my locs with a silk scarf at night, and in the morning,
my hair is "done". As locs grow longer, it's fun to develop new
hair styles. I, too, am looking forward to receiving advice about
natural hair care and products.
I've also heard about getting illnesses from hair dye; so far I've
had no problems, but I do believe that excessive use can be
dangerous.
Good luck with going natural.

Jazmee324,

I have not heard about dyes and perms being linked to certain cancers but I certainly would not be surprised if this were in fact true.

In regards to your dandruff; my best friend had be plagued with it for years and visited the dermatologists on several occasions and they gave her topical medication that did not help much. She stopped getting relaxers, went natural and she is dandruff free. I had another friend who visited her dermatologist about a thinning spot in her head, the doctor looked through her scalp and told my friend that she had some major scarring throughout her scalp and recommended that she stop getting perms. She has been transitioning from her relaxer for 10 months now. You may want to consider not relaxing you hair anymore if you have severe dandruff and chemical burns.

hello- from newbie

2006-11-04 11:09:24

hi,
i would like to introduce myself to the board, my name is marie. i
am not natural or fully nappy yet. i've still got a perm, just put a
bone straight relaxer to the back of my hair since that part seems to
always be the most nappies/difficult to comb. i have been plagued
with dandruff, especially in the front around the crown/temples/ears
and always get chemical burns (doesn't matter what kind of perm...the
no-lye helps a little ).
i will be making a birthday the first of the year (pisces) and need a
change for my health and new lifestyle (changing careers/school). i
heard or read in a natural hairstyle book that perms/dyes have been
linked to certain kind of cancers and may have a big part in black
women having certain illnesses white women don't have.
again, i know i will enjoy and learn alot from this board about hair
products, hairstyles, health issues, etc. ladies , have a good and
safe weekend.

[Naturally_You] No Poo & Some Truth

2006-11-04 06:22:39

Hello Everyone,
I saw a note about the "No Poo" method or shall I say the no shampoo method
of cleaning the hair due to concerns about all the chemicals that are in
most shampoos. I must say that you are correct, many companies put many
toxic chemicals in their body care products, this is why it is important to
read the labels of the products you purchase.
I am the owner and designer of 100% Natural Body Care products and have a
great deal of research on my web site (Mia Simone's Boutique
http://www.miasb.com) about the types of chemicals many companies use. My
products are 100% natural and designed and handcrafted by me. You are
welcome to visit my web site and see the large variety of 100% natural
shampoo and body bars for the hair and body along with other 100% natural
body care products.
If you have questions then please send them to: customerservice@...
since I don't read my Naturally You messages every day. You will also see
numerous testimonials from my customers (both in the United States and
Internationally) on my web site. Have a wonderful day!

I too had that issue from micro braids and cornrows and I have found this effective. My god father who was going bald used it and his hair grew back as well. It may be a little pricey for just a small amount, but you only use a little and it is worth it.

Hope this helps,

RE: Natural Hair Salon in the Houston Area

Hi Tameika,
What I found to be a really good gel (after trying so many ones) is Fantasia's
IC (InterCellular) hair polisher styling gel. It contains aloe, vitamins & wheat
protein and is non-flaking. I heard aloe vera gel is good also. However, I
don't really use gel often in my hair because I think that regardless of the
brand, they all are made up of a compound to cause the hair to be dry. I have
used a Natural Hair Food called Ginseng Gro to twist my hair WHILE it's still
wet - I find it to be shinier than any gel. What is also great to use for
twisting is Shea Butter. Hope This Helps!!

Re: NO POO

2006-11-02 20:05:50

No poo is a method of cleansing the hair with conditioner instead of
shampoo. Some shampoos contain harsh detergents, that strip the hair
of natural oils, leaving it dry and brittle. So, the no poo method
skips the shampoo completely. Some people wash occassionally with
shampoo, and in between with conditioner. Some don't use shampoo at
all, ever. I would not recommend this for locs.

Re: Question

2006-11-02 18:46:17

Hi Nikki, I have a similar problem except mine's worse because I
have started developing bald spots around my temples. My thinning
hair started as a result of relaxers and microbraids about 2 years
ago, and has gotten worse because of inattention. I've had to put my
locing process on hold and just maintain a twa in order to pay
attention to this problem. Any way, I've been using ORS Hair Serum
for the past 3 months, but it seems to be making the problem worse.
Granted, I've been inconsistent with my use of the product but I've
noticed some hair pimples and very little progress. Someone from my

Hi Asana

I'm Tameika I live in Houston, I have been natural for 15 months. Email me outside the group verionique7@..., i'm searching for Natural Salons.

Tameika

To the other members, what is a good gel or hair product that can be used for twists (i'm referring to twists done with a rat tail comb). I had some twists done with brown gel, after sitting under thr dryer my hair was glossy BUT very hard and brittle. I like the appearance of the twists but not with the texture it left my hair. Any suggestions???????

Can someone please explain the no poo washing method. Why is conditioner only better than the regular shapoo and conditioner wash?

Hi Everyone;

I was wondering if there are any members of Naturally_You who reside in Houston, TX. I am transitioning and would like to find a reputable salon (for natural haircare) in my area. Any good references that you could offer would be greatly appreciated. [INLINE]
