Re: Rick James (His death & his locks)

Those do look like brothalocs, there not pretty to me. I like
traditional locs. Some sisterlocs look stringy. Rick James is a
great legend. In my opinion, I think his locz would have looked
better if they were thicker.

Hello Everyone,
I saw this article today and wanted to know how many of you saw it. It also
looked like Rick James had Sisterlocks/Brotherlocks. Here is the article
for those who want to read it and see his picture.

new locs/was Welcome 100th Member!

2006-08-30 23:20:06

It is normal for new locs to look less than perfect. As they go
through the process of matting up they may look frizzy, dry, fuzzy,
etc. Normally I would not recommend retwisting more than every 2
weeks. Even that is excessive in my opinion but I don't think it
will cause any damage. Twisting more frequently than that can cause
weak roots due to overtwisting - locs will just snap off eventually.
In this case, because you were caught in the rain several times, the
fuzziness or unravelling may be more than what would normally
happen. If you want to retwist your locs yourself, just use a little
aloe vera gel and roll each loc between your fingertips. Make sure
to go in the same direction your stylist did. It may not look
perfect, but it will hold you over until your next salon visit.

New locs unraveling??

2006-08-30 16:18:00

Brownie:
First , relax, I go this weekend to get my twists to start locs and
from all the advice I have been reading online, it is normal for your
twists to unravel--however,until your hair locs, just believe you may
need to get them retwisted every week to two weeks to keep them
looking nice. I know that seems like alot, but you want your hair to
a) look good (you know we all do) :) and b) well, refer back to a.
So it may be a little time consuming but I think it was a reach to
thnk your twists, new twists at that would last an entire month. What
did you twist your hair with?? I got some aloe vera gel from a health
food store. I personally don't know how that is gonna go, seeing how
watery the gel is, my twists I'm sure will unravel, luckliy the lady
that will do my hair is available in a days notice for emergencies. I
hope everything works out ok...Keep us posted. Oh, and to answer your
question the best loc maintanence is to keep them twisted until they
begin to loc. Just because you are natural that doesn't mean you let
your hair go. You can twist your hair yourself, just remember to
twist in the same direction. And stay positive!! Good luck girl!

I was thinking along these same lines myself, actually...when Nikki first asked the question...I meant to comment but got side-tracked...it is waaaaay after the fact but important enough I think to address again...:) Be true to yourself girlfriend and go for the job that is conducive to who you are. And quiet as it is kept...white folks are not as worried about our hair as we are! At the end of the day you thinking that you got hired because you temporarily "fixed" your hair is a testament to what YOU are thinking not to what THEY are thinking. I say keep your hair NATURAL always and forever.

Kinky twists is a great transition style. It can last up to three
months and the kinky texture gives you an oppurtunity to see how
beautiful your natural hair will look like. Proper maintenance of
your hair will eliminate the amount of damage to your hair whenever
wearing extensions. :-)

Besides some minor set backs with the location, my showcase was a
sucess! I was happy to have helped a few women decide to go natural
after my discussion on chemical relaxers and why we use relaxers.
I've sent the pics of the models off to the developer, I should

"BRING YOU IN A BAG"/games

2006-08-29 11:16:46

Greetings!
My son will be thirty as well... in November...wow...all I did was blink and ...sigh
At any rate, "BRING YOU IN A BAG" is ALWAYS a big hit at my "hen parties". This is a wonderful activitiy, especially for gatherings where there are all women. ...WE HAVE A BALL! I have never done it with men present but I suspect it would probably be even more interesting and fun...
Bringing "you" in a bag means...the person should put some items in a bag (any bag of their choosing.) The items should be things that they use to describe who they are. During each persons turn they pull out an item one at a time and explain the significance of it...a person who collects frogs would pull out a frog and then tell why they like them, etc...or maybe a person who paints as a hobby would pull out their brushes or a painting and tell about it. You can control the time spent by each person if you specify the number of items to bring. I highly recommend this cuz you know how we do sometimes...LOL...I had one lady, a leo...lol...bring a beautiful pulley suitcase full of beautiful outfits and shoes and belts...LOL...her thing was clothesI...she had that and a picture of her kids...LOL...it took a half hour to oooh and aaah and try on and pass around!...lol Putting a limit on the items really depends on your guests and the time you want to spend on this.
Doing this activity brings alot of dynamics into play...
Just to name a few:..Public speaking. most folks don't want to speak in front of others but they want to tell about themselves so they go it!...lol
You find out what is important to people from THEM...rather than what you may have THOUGHT was important to them.
People find out they have things in common
It is even interesting looking at the different types of bags people choose...even this tells something about the person.
HAVE FUN!

Heat from straightening comb

2006-08-26 11:01:57

Nikki,
Heat from straightening comb (or any heated appliance) can crack
cuticles and sap moisture from hair and lead to hair damage.
Straightening comb should be used occasionally. Adequately
conditioning hair with shea butter before heating can insulate hair
against low and medium heat (reducing damage), so make sure heat on
hot comb is kept low. Hair remains straight for approx. two weeks.

My name is Pat and I am in Fishers, Indiana. It is a sub of Indianapolis. I have been wearing twists for about 2 years now and I love them. I want to know how to style them for those special occassions. I do them myself and I always get compliments. I had to endure patience that comes with growing them and now all of my energy is positive. God has taught me something new.

Black Women's Arts Festival - Wow!

2006-08-24 21:58:53

The BWAF today was one of the best shows I have ever seen. It
parallels the Locs Conference in organization, continuity,
attendance, and the performances were off the hook. I saw more
diverse, talented sisters than I have ever seen all at once in one
day. AND MOST OF THEM HAD NATURAL HAIR, ALWAYS LOVELY!
A cellist, a violinist, an opera singer. Spoken word artists galore.
A beat boxer, rapper, dancers. Interpretive dance combined with
spoken word/song. A break dancer/spoken word artist. A rock
singer/guitarist, a rock band(Who sung a bangin song called "No
Lye" - we got the CD![ http://tinyurl.com/5ekpx ]). An opera singer
(on the open mic, she wasn't even on the line up!), another
singer/guitarist, an acoustic singer/guitarist. Wow, the lineup was
so, so, so, so, good. AND THEY WERE ALL BLACK WOMEN.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, might as well pack
up and go home, it got better! The best show of the year, if you
weren't there this year, make sure you are next year!
Props to Monica McIntyre, wow, that show was the bomb!

Hello Nikki,
It sounds as though you might be interested in a natural anti-perspirant &
deodorant (something to help with the odor and the sweat). From the brands
that I've seen on the market I have not seen that many natural
anti-perspirants, but I do recall that the brand "Toms of Maine" has a new
natural deodorant and anti-perspirant out on the market.
Here are a few sites with various natural anti-perspirants that might help

Hello Mia,

I visited your website. Love it. What do you recommend in the way of a natural deoderant. I have used baking soda, but it is too irritating for my skin. Now, I use a spray mist that is purified water and natural minerals. It works very well, but I will perspire if I am too excited or agitated. However, I have no odor. I like it, but I just wanted to know what else was out there. I have used a deoderant from the health food stores here, but I am not sure if the ingredients are "okay." I haven't used it in so long. The spray mist lasts a very, very long time. I have one small bottle and it has lasted me a while now and still going strong.

Thanks,

Re: [Naturally_You] Sister to Sister Encouragement

Thank you for those words of encouragement. There are times when I need to hear that. I started locs at the suggestion of my daughters who both have them. It's been three years for me, eight years for them. There are some women who are of my generation ( I'm 46) who feel I'm trying to regain my youth by imitating my daughters. While that's not true of course, I grew dreds for my own reasons, it aggravates me when I hear ignorance. The words of encouragement help a lot when I devil is trying to whisper in my ear! Again, thank you for those words.

Sister to Sister Encouragement

2006-08-20 16:22:53

One of those forwards that was worth reading. This goes out to
everyone, Muslim, Christian, Agnostic or "other". Our higher power
watches over and supports us when we need it and when we think we
don't.
**************************************
"Someone will always be prettier. They will always be smarter. Their
house will be bigger. They will drive a better car. Their children
will do better in school. And their husband will fix more things
around the house. So let it go, and love you and your circumstances.
Think about it. The prettiest sister in the world can have hell all
up in her heart. And the most highly favored sister on your job may
be unable to have children. And the richest sister you know--she's
got the car, the house, clothes--might be lonely. And the word says
if I have not love, I am nothing.
So, again, love you. Love who you are right now and let God be your
barometer. Mirror him. Look in the mirror in the morning and see how
much God you see. He's the only standard, and even when you come up
short, he will not leave you or forsake you.
Smile and may God continue to BLESS YOU Real GOOD!! "I am too
blessed to be stressed and too anointed to be disappointed!" The
shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance
between your knees and the floor. The one who kneels to god can
stand up to anything." Winners make things happen. Losers let things
happen. Be Blessed ladies and pass this on to encourage another
sister.
'To the world you might be one person, but to one person you just
might be the world'
I love you, and remember your life is not as bad as it seems.

continue my natural hair route, but with locks...as it works very well with
my schedule and because it requires low maintenace and ease of styling for
me. It's so nice to see more Black women coming home to their natural self
through embracing and loving their natural hair and using natural products.

Hi Kiyonna,
I think that it has to do with softness or the hair's
natural curl pattern, but I'm not really sure either.

Re: [Naturally_You] sisterlocks?

They are locs that are very, very small. They are not grown in the traditional way - they are too small to be twisted. They will break if so. They are cultivated with a tool and the hair is almost like a crochet pattern. I've had them before. Check out www.sisterlocks.com and www.divadzigns.com and check out her hair (sisterlocks), as well as the links section of the sight. They are a lot of sights with them. They are really, really pretty.

Re: hair texture

2006-08-19 10:55:48

Fine, course, and kinky are used to describe hair texture, Fine hair
is used to describe hair that is soft in texture, feeling smooth to
your fingers. Course and kinky are the same, feeling rough in texture
between you finger tips. Words like, coiled, spiral, wavy, curly, s-
curl are used to describe your hair pattern. You can have fine
coiled hair or course coiled hair. Everyones hair texture is unique.
Most people have several textures and patterns. I have one client
whose hair in the back and front are fine, while her hair in the
middle is course. You'll find out your hair texture when it grows
in. When I was growing my hair, I couldn't wait till my hair grew
out so I could find out my hair texture and hair pattern. :-)

Ok. Recently I asked my mom what my hair texture was like when I was younger before she put the relaxer in and she told me that my hair is "fine" like my fathers. He has also said this. But what exactly is the difference between fine, course, and kinky?

Re: sisterlocks?

2006-08-18 20:02:04

Sisterlocks are locs formed by a patented method of intertwining the
hair. They are known for their small size, and often stated to have
greater flexibility in styling bc of their size. They are done by
SisterLocks consultants, who have gone through training to learn the
method. They can cost $200-$1000 to start, and around $60 to
maintain every 4-6 weeks. Because the hair is intertwined, this
method is recommended for softer/straighter hair textures, and for
people who work out or wash their hair often - once they start to
mat, unravelling after maintenance should not be an issue.

How to tell its pure shea butter...

2006-08-18 13:23:54

It seems to be an expected tradition of American/European companies
to create a synthetic form of a natural product. They have managed
to do the same with shea butter. A lot of products on the market
today read shea butter on the label but usually contains harsh
elements (i.e mineral oil) or they are using REFINED Shea Butter.
Refined shea butter is pure shea butter that has been diluted with
fillers and chemicals. The label might read: "contains 20% shea
butter". Refined shea butter no longer contains the same moistrizing
or healing properties it held in its pure form - in fact it holds no
properties! Refined shea butter is usually white in color and grainy
in texture. Refined shea butter is used by companies because its
cheaper than using pure shea butter. Because of shea butter's growing
popularity in the West, a lot of companies are using refined shea
butter just so they can write on product lables: "Lotion with Shea
Butter", even though the refined shea butter no longer holds the same
properties.
Pure shea butter is the best to use for your skin and hair. Like Ny
stated it can usually be found in any cultural store or African shop.
Another term for pure shea butter is unrefined. Pure shea butter is
yellowish or grayish beige in color and has a nutty scent. I love
shea butter and use it my salon to not only moistrize but also to
style our clients hair. Its a great alternative to gel, it won't
clog your pores and won't leave a residue.
I just recently became a U.S distributor of pure shea butter for West
African company. I can provide shea butter by the pound at a
reasonable price for those who are interested. Just me know.

Re: [Naturally_You] How to use Shea Butter and Olive Oil ...?

2006-08-15 22:35:57

Hello Aishah,
I have been natural for the past 2 and half years and Im loving every bit of it. And I have used Shea Butter (Pure) the yellow kind is the best. What I do to maintain the softness in my hair is that since I wear braids also, I wash my hair once or twice a month after that I use Pure Shea Butter while it is wet sometimes I will air dry or set my hair dryer on cool air. Then I will use some more shea butter and take a pressing comb (wide tooth comb) there are different sizes. And press out my hair once then have my hair braided . This is really a good way to grow out your hair fast if you keep it up and to top it off I spray Organics Root Stimulator Olive Oil in my hair. It can be alittle expensive depending on the different prices on shea butter in your area and your beautician. I pay 12.00 for the shea butter this will last you along time if you use it wisely and about 5.00 at Sallys Beauty Supply for the Organic Products. For my braids I guess this is were it
really gets expensive for the two row cornrows they can range from $65 to $80 dollars but it is very much worth it when you want to maintain what god has giving you.
God Bless and good luck

Re: How to use Shea Butter and Olive Oil ...?

2006-08-15 16:29:22

Hi Aishah,
The olive oil you can buy at the grocery store. Just put a dime or
quarter sized amount in your palm, rub your hands together and
massage it through your hair and scalp, preferrably while damp. Use
a little more as needed.
You can buy all natural shea butter in cultural shops. 100% natural
shea butter. It doesn't have to have anything else in it. Some
people add oils or other things to make it softer, or smell good.
Some formulations do have other helpful ingredients, but for the
most part they are not required. There is a all natural shea butter
available at www.MiaSB.com. It says on the site it is soft - natural
shea butter can be very very hard, which sometimes makes it
difficult to get out of the jar and to apply to the hair.
Most of the time, drug stores don't have what I'm looking for in
shea butter/pomades. They may say "natural", but take a look at the
ingredients list and yes you will see plenty of mineral oil and
chemicals. By the same token, some people swear by
traditional "grease" which is mineral oil based.

hot oil treatment or could you leave it in? What about the Shea
Butter? Is there a certain brand I should look for? Also, I read

mineral oil in them...Help!!!

Re: Help for SC

2006-08-15 03:13:56

Hi JKW,
Twist extensions should not be too stressful on your hair because
your hair is use to being braided for the sew-ins. Stress from
braids usually occurs when braids are done extremely tightly, to
small, and to often. The twist can last up to three months, but
because you said your hair gets knotty quickly I wouldn't recommend
you wear it for more than two months. Otherwise your hair will begin
to loc, unless you want to loc your hair.
Have you ever thought of twisting your own hair. Its cute style for
the summer weather. Short & Simple.
For dryness, try moistrizing your hair daily or every other day with
shea butter or a light oil. After a wash make sure to condition and
apply oil to your scalp or try giving your self a hot oil treatment
once a month.

Re: going from relaxer to natural

2006-08-14 22:23:46

Kinanamo1,
Congragulations on giving up the chemicals :-). Going natural will
take lots of patience, but it does not require that you cut off all
your hair and start from scratch. Many women transition from chemcial
to natural by wearing braided extensions,sew-in weaves, or any style
(i.e straw-sets) that allows them to let their hair grow in without
having the in-between look. Plus keeping your hair in durable styles
will make the process a little easier and faster, you don't have to
fuss over your hair everyday to make it look presentable; you can
just get up and go and not think about it for a week or a few months
at a time. I recommned braiding your hair. Braids are very durable,
lasting up to three months at a time and easy to maintain.
You should be aware that as your hair starts to grow in, the relaxed
ends will begin to break off and eventually cut them off. But when
you cut is up to you. By that time you'll have a good amount of
beautiful natural hair. :-)Now all you have to do is find someone to
style your hair. Where do you live? Do you know of any natural salon
in your area or anyone who knows how to braid?

RE: [Naturally_You] going from relaxer to natural

2006-08-14 21:35:31

Hello,
What I did was get my hair braided. This gave me time to decide on how I
wanted to style my natural hair. Also head wraps are fun, When you need to
dedo the braids then you can cut the ends of your hair. I find that when
some people make a major cut (TWA), it tends to be scary since we have not
been accustomed to our natural texture for a very long time.

Help in SC

2006-08-14 05:17:32

I have been natural for about 3 years now and don't know what to do
w/ my hair. The first 2 years I kept my hair cut b/c it would knot
so quickly (coarse, coily, and straight texture) but now in my 3rd
year I have been growing it out. I have seen little growth since
November 03. I try to style my hair but it doesn't come out
right. This results in me getting some sew-in weave. I went to a
salon that "specializes" in natural hair but when I ask the
simplest questions I saw otherwise. Can anyone give me some tips
on how I can styles my hair (~4.5 inches) . I was thinking about
getting some twists extension, would that be too much stress on my
hair? I also have some problems w/ dryness any suggestions?
Thanks,
JKW

Tips for 11 yr old

2006-08-13 20:47:32

Hi Jennifer,
I hope you keep your hair natural this time. :-)
The funny thing about hair is that it has to get use to being styled
a certain way. If you don't usually braid her hair, it probably came
unloose because her hair is not use it. But you'll see the more the
hair is braided the longer it begins to hold. Also did you place
rubberbands at the end and did she tie it down at night? Children at
that age don't really think about hair too much and don't usually
give a second thought about keeping it together. Individual braids
will last longer than cornrows; usually from 2-3 weeks if properly
cared for. Have you ever two-strand twisted her hair this would look
cute and would be easy to maintain. She could decorate the strands
with beads or cowrie shells :-)
Untangle her hair when its wet using a lot of conditioner. Using a
wide tooth comb, comb through small sections of the hair at a time
until whole head is complete. To keep it from tangling, try braiding
her long hair into two or three big plaits at night. Tangling usually
occurs when we sleep because of tossing and turning.
Hope this was helpful. :-)
Myriam
P.S. I'm sorry there is no where in wisconsin to get your hair done.

Re: In need of loc Guidance/Philly Stylist

2006-08-13 16:51:20

Hi Zena,
I am sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with your locs! I
recommend Exavia Love as a stylist, I'm not sure how much she
charges but she will take care of your hair in a private salon in
North Philly. Her number is 215.927.1717. She is excellent, and I'm
pretty sure will explain to you how to care for your hair if you
can't get back to her as soon as you'd like to. Tell her Naturally
You!/Kaya Casper recommended her.
BTW, Myriam posted an excellent message about the care of locs - the
fuzziness and buildup is common. Avoid any beeswax or sticky
products, and wash your hair vigorously with a clarifying shampoo
followed by plain olive oil. You can put in more than normal and sit
with it for about 20 minutes on damp hair then rinse it for a little
extra moisturizing. You can also try soaking your hair in warm water
with a little lemon juice and EO to break up the residue as well.
Make sure to always remoisturize after soaking/washing since you are
already suffering from dryness.
Good luck!

Re: Welcome New Members!

I'm new here too. My name is Jennifer. I've been naturally on and
off for the last 11 years. My most rescent big chop was in Febuary
of 2004. This time I am hoping to make it last a life time. By doing
this I am hoping my own children will not get caught up in the whole
relaxer thang. My hair is currently about a inch or a inch in half
long worn in a afro. I enjoy wearing it wrapped. And once in a while
I pull on a wig. Looking forward to being able to two strand twist
it again.
We live in a very small city in Wisconsin. It openned it's first
hair salon for African Americans this year but they have no one that
braids or locs and don't plan to add those services. sigh.
My biggest challege has been what to do with my 11 yr mid back
length hair. She is biracial (Asian and Black) and it is very
curly/wavy and tangles quickly. This week I cornrowed it but they
came loose in a day or two. Any hints or ideas would be great.
Thank you for starting this group and magazine.

Name is Zena i reside in philly, originally from Brooklyn :) I have had my locs for 8 months now, while i love them, and pride myself in their uniqueness, they really arent where i want them too be, and their lac of proper development is a constant source of stress in my life, especially every morn when i wake and look in the mirror. Im not independently wealthy so the only time ive been to the loctician is when i first started them, since then ive been at the mercy of friends, non locticians and leaning to my own understanding. My hair is fuzzy, the roots look as if their is dirt trapped theirin and since i color my hair my self (reddish blond) my hair is very dry and brittle. HELP PLEASE! Somebody have any suggestions how i can get more loc savvy, in addition i have a convention im attending this summer in New Orleans, i wanna be sharp, what reasonably priced loctician should i choose in the philly area? Khamit Kinks, Duafe, Atajamil or Au Naturale perhaps, anybody have
any insight on these shops or others. Ok my memoir is done. thanks for the help

My Favorite Hair Tip

2006-08-13 02:49:01

Never, never comb coiled hair dry. This will, with no doubt, leave
your scalp feeling sore and bruised and a comb with broken teeth. The
best time to comb and untangle the beautiful coils of natural hair is
when it is wet during a wash. Apply lots of conditioner to your
hair, making sure its completely saturated. Wait about a minute or
two to allow the conditioner to set in your hair. Then using a wide
tooth comb, comb through small sections of your hair at a time;
making sure to hold the section of hair at its roots and combing till
no knots exists. Continue this process until your whole head is done.
The conditioner softens the hair and makes it more pilable. If it
hurts when you comb, apply more conditioner. This is a tried and true
method, especailly for children who hate getting their hair done.
This method of combing will make the experience a little easier for
them.

Locs can be Rescued:-)

2006-08-10 22:00:07

Salaam Aesha,
I would be glad to help you. The first thing is to know that what
you are experiencing happens to many who begin locs. So don't think
you're alone. I'm sure your locs are not as bad or "ugly" as you
think they are either. We are often our toughest critics. I have locs
and also keep my hair covered.
The loctician you were visiting was right about the beeswax. Beeswax
is EXTREMELY diffcult to wash out of locs. I have one client who
began locing her hair five years ago and she still has traces of
beeswax in her hair! It takes excessive washing to cleanse the hair
of it. Because of its waxy & sticky texture it gets trapped within
the loc and works as a sticking agent to lint or dirt that would
normal wash out of your hair. Plus besswax can clog your pores, which
can lead to infection.
The best thing I've found for locs and natural hair is unrefined shea
butter. Shea butter comes from the shea nut off the Karite tree in
West Africa. Its been used by our people for centuries and is
naturally enriched with vitamins and minerals nourishing to both our
skin and hair. Its works great for FRIZINESS, DRYNESS, and SOFTENS
the hair - all the problems you've been having. Plus it does not clog
your pores or leave any residue. But if you have a hard time finding
pure shea butter right away, oils like tea tree oil, jojoba oil, or
Kemi's Oil (they have a nice blend and smell), will have similar
effects on your hair. Oils enrich the hair with needed vitamins and
minereal and adds moisture which softens the hair.
The best shampoos to use are those with no harsh chemicals,
especailly Sodium Laureth (it drys your hair). One rule: IF i can't
pronounce it or eat it I ain't using it. Shampoos that soly contain
plant or vegetable ingreiedients like tea tree oil and rosemary are
the best for natural hair. You'll have to do a lot of label reading
but you'll find a product. You can find natural shampoos at
WholeFoods (natural food stores) or perhaps you or anyone else in the
group knows someone who makes natural shampoos or you can make your
own (its pretty simply). I also make my own shampoos. I can send you
sample if you have a hard time finding something in your area :-)
You wrote: "...each loc has hair hanging off each side of it that is
not "locked" in with the loc..."
There's one word for that: New growth. Your hair is contionusly
growing and as your roots grow in you will have loose strands at the
root or near your existing locs. This is normal and will always
happen. This is why twisting or maintaining locs is important, you
have to either twist the new strands with an existing loc or start a
new loc. With locs you will always have new locs growing, because
your hair is always growing. :-)
Retwising is also important in keeping individual locs separated. You
said you have "...strands of hair from this one locked in with hair
from the other..." This is a result of growing strands interwining
with each other. You can fix this by pulling them apart if just
connected by a few strands. But if the locs are basically loced
together or too hard to separate, you can twist them together to
combine them.
Depending on what stage of growth your locs are in ( I'm too sure
from what you wrote) and how fast your hair grows depends on how
often you need to retwist your hair. If your hair is already loced
then you can retwist your hair every 2-3 weeks to combine new growth
and separate any interwining locs. Because you wear your hair
covered you probably can retwist your hair once a month (every 3
weeks) and just separte your locs with every washing until your ready
to combine the new growth next month. Frizziness happens to every one
whether loced or not and is just how our hair texture is. Though it
can't be eliminated, you can control frizziness by mositrizing it and
tieing your hair down at night.
Since your not going back to the loctician anymore do you know how to
twist your own hair?
I hope this was helpful. :-) Oh yeah, actually I can send you a free
sample of the shea butter along with the shampoo if you would like.
It can give you an idea of what to look for. Let me know :-)

Greetings Myriam!,
You own a salon?!...:)...maybe you (or anybody else) can help me...I am having a crisis with my locs. I started them in August. I call them "mess" locs because they are super frizzy, super dry, super stiff, and kind of ugly to me...not to mention flat from wearing my headpiece (aww, so sad, huh?)...I went to a loctician and she started them with two strand twists...every two weeks I was going to get "twisted" but two days later my stuff would be looking like "ugh" AND I was paying $40.00...Okay? Well, I stopped going and now they are really a mess and I just don't know what to do. I don't know what kind of shampoo or no-poo to use or oil or wax or whatever. The loctician told me not to use bees wax because it is too hard to wash out and stuff will stick to it and blah blah blah...but I need something to smooth this frazzled frizzled mess. I'm afraid if I don't do something quick I'll have a massive headlock!...LOL. Lord, can somebody help me?...I need a loc rescue.
Specifically, each loc has hair hanging off each side of it that is not "locked" in with the loc and then I got strands of hair from this one locked in with hair from the other one...eeeeeeeeeeeek...lol I really ain't tryna look like...uh...what's that child's name...um, with the teeth...Lil John! Looking for a Locktician Training Class

2006-08-10 10:06:51

Hello Everyone,
I am so glad to have found this group. I have been looking for
somewhere where I could find help and I know I have found it here.
I had loc's for 5 years and took them out. Then I went on a
spiritual quest and shave my head. Now my hair is about 1 1/2 inches
long so I am going to loc it again.
I am looking for a career change and since I love natural things:
health, herbs, food, cloths, and of course HAIR...
I am trying to find out information where I can learn how to loc hair
in different styles and using extensions and natural colors. I know
how to do basic locs, I have loc'ed my 2 of my son's heads...(They
are not babies they are grown men)...Yea, I am starting a new career
at 49. But it will beat working for the man the rest of my life for
slave wages.
If there is anyone who can help guide me to where I can gain the
knowledge or attend a class or to intern training I would appreciate
it.
I live in the Houston, Texas area.
Looking forward to hearing from any and all of you and your advice.

Peace,
I belong to several groups and I noticed that alot of sisters from Philly are running around out here in cyber space...:) Philly always in the house. It seems like a nice, cultural, spiritual, type of city. I actually have been there a few times but was unable to get my tour on or my "shop". lol...My son lives in Philly and he is always telling me that my products would sell off the table in Philly (I'm a vendor)...He played B-ball for St. Joe's for a couple of years (was with the Hawks at the sweet 16 in 97) then he returned last year and and graduated. (praise the lord!)
I think imma have-ta pay him a visit real soon and check Philly out!!!...

RE: [Naturally_You] Welcome Shonette/transitioning

2006-08-07 22:31:47

Yes. I'm definitely going to use braids. I feel it will help the process and I wouldn't have to bother my hair. I also found a Dominican beautician that treats unpermed hair. I will be going to her on a regular basis for treatment. I'm a little nervous, because it's been so long since I've seen my natural texture, but at the same time, I'm excited.

wraps do you do? The high Badu style, the knot style?? I love
headwraps but don't get to wear them that often.

Indigofera/Candle Beauty is a really nice shop. My favorite product is the
Fresh Pinapple Body Butter - for now! They have a ton of other things I would
love to try - bath teas, salts, soaps, scrubs, oils for hair and body. Their
candle selection is awesome, from the gel candles you may have seen
elsewhere, to cakes, pies, cookies, and more creative candles than you've
ever seen. Definitely stop by if you can.

Hey Bantubeauty,
I think that I can offer you some reassurance regarding your choice
of hairstyles while in the nursing profession. I have been a nurse
for over 10 years and nutural for the last 4. I am currently in a
high level administration position and I still do some clinical work
in the hospital.
In my career, I have never had a nasty comment from a co-worker since
I have been natural. In fact, people are ALWAYS commenting on my
hair and asking to touch it. This is a far cry from the comments
of "she need to do something with her head" I used to get with my
three month old microbraids :)
Occassionally an eldery patient has something mean to say about my
hair, or my skin, or my weight, or whatever else they come up with,
but that is part of the deal. Sick or demented patients can just be
mean sometimes.
So, I say all of this to say: Wear your hair in a style that allows
you to exude self-confidence and self-worth. With an poisitve
attitude such as that, who could deny you a job?
By the way, with the current nursing shortage, you could have no hair
and a green scalp and still get hired if you have the credentials!!!!
Good luck!!

Perched on a corner in a hill on Chelten Avenue in North Philadelphia is a sunny Oasis: Indigofera, your one stop shopping for soothing oils, aromatic candles, luxuriating soaps, and delightful decor.
Windows facing North and East that capture sunlight all day long and a cheery, nuturing staff is what greets you when you walk through the door and explore their treasure trove of pampering delights.
Named for a plant that dye has been used to adorn fabric since times of old, Indigofera strives to supply you with products that celebrate you-Naturally!
So if you are in Philadelphia, stop by and browse their products for Women and Men, you'll come away with something to make you feel like the king or queen you deserve. If you are anywhere else surf on over to www.indigofera.com and take a look at all they have to offer or sign up for a pampering party.

Okay...let me make sure I am in the right place...I was surfing like crazy the day I signed up for this group...is there an affiliation with a magazine and this group? Yeah...I remember (being post-menpausal makes my memory suspect, believe me...lol), I wanted some information about distribution...haven't heard anything yet...

Another thing...did somebody say "brothers"? I have to remember that there are brothers in this group...I am so used to being in women only groups...I might mess around and say something for "our" ears only...heh heh heh...:)

Re: [Naturally_You] Favorite Hair Tips

2006-08-03 22:29:34

I've been natural for 10 years, I had locks for 7 of
those years. After which I cut them for spiritual
reasons. For the past 3 years I've worn my hair in a
short natural. The longer one wears their hair natural
the more it takes on it original form. Also, I've
noticed that the diet plays a major part as well the
more natural (less meat) the diet the healthier the
hair. I've been a Vegan for about 12 years and the
longer I've been a vegan the softer and healthier my
hair has become. Lately I've used a natural shampoo in
which a sister friend of mine makes and it is
wonderous along with her conditioner. After which I
oil my hair with Coconut Oil (Organic). Also, for a
rinse Coconut Milk was suggested. I haven't tried it
yet but plan to. It can be found in most health and
grocery stores.

Hi Leslie,

I'm a Senior Graphic Artist in Toronto Canada. Being the only person of colour in my work environment with natural hair can be a challenge. My boss and office manager told me " I would looked better or more professional" with braids or a weave. These statements are coming from a European and a South American. We are all human and yes words can hurt, however I take it all in stride. Embrace the new you and your crown with pride.

Welcome.

nursing/natural hair

2006-08-02 08:13:54

Toya, the editor of NY! magazine is a nurse. She has been natural
for several years. She went natural by transitioning with braids.
She was very unsure about wearing her natural hair at work. She did
it anyway and it has not held her back. In fact, she is now the
administrator of the nursing home where she works. Her natural hair
did not stop her from climbing the ladder all the way to the top
where she is, and I suspect she could go further if she chose to.
Her experience was that it was her own opinion of how people would
view her hair, not how people viewed her hair, that was holding her
back. Good luck.

needing a natural hair forum

Hi!
Allow me to introduce myself. I am a 46 year old divorcee who has
decided to take on a life changing image.I realize of course that as
I change, society's perceptions of me will change also. I've rolled
with the punches all my life, so there's no change there. But there
are times when I have doubts. Especially in the field I want to go
into: nursing. It is a fact that no matter how well you do a thing,
all most people will see is your hair and never in a positive light.
I can only remember once when a white person told me they liked my
hair and respected my choice. While, I realize other people's
opinions are not my problem in theary, in reality, if I can't find a
job because of my hair, it is my problem. I'd like to hear from
people in simular situations. Thanks!

Ok, you joined this list partially because you wanted to know what's
going on behind the scenes at Naturally You!, right?
Well, we are in the process of developing a compelling art exhibit
surrounding hair and its depictions in various mediums past and
present. The exhibit will also include personal stories and live
demos. We are in the first of the first planning stages, and it will
most likely open in a prominent gallery in Philadelphia in the fall.
We will keep you posted on the progress!
