olive oil was my saving grace for itchy scalp. before i loced, i
mixed regular olive oil w/ors olive oil lotion. each night i would
put just a little on my scalp and hair (spritz w/alittle water also)
and then put in 4-5 cornrows. it was very soft in the mornings not
to mention wavy and little to no itching. now w/my locs, i use a
water/olive oil spritz that i soak immediately after shampooing and
use about 2-3 times a week lightly after showering and letting the
steam get to it. to combat itching also, i just started shampooing
weekly vs. biweekly and i use neutragena creamy moisturizing shampoo.

That is discouraging. If possible, go to the hair conferences etc in
your area, and bask in the glory of being around like minded AAs.
It's the most beautiful experience.

Emu oil is one of the richest oils you can use on your hair - it is
animal based. Olive oil is also excellent, as is avacado oil. Shea
butter is wonderful.
For itchy scalp, try diluted peppermint oil - a few drops in olive
oil. We recently developed an invigorating scalp treatment that
works for itchy scalp. It will be available on the site soon.
Good luck!

Hi,
I'm from Toronto Canada. I sooooooooo happy that I have found a groud that
supports natural hair beauty. In Canada we have pretty bad winter's and dry
Summer's, I wanted to know what would be best thing to use to make my hair
softer and reduce itchy scalp.
With much thanks,
Happy to be Nappy Eh!

my locs.....

2006-07-30 11:37:00

My three year anniversery is coming up in August and some people in my family also have locs, so that's not a problem. What hurts me is when I get disparaging remarks from my fellow African Americans. It's bad enough that I have to tune out the ignorance from a other people, I should get some respect from my "brothas" and "sistas". It pisses me off at times.

Hi,
Welcome to the group. Nice to have a loc "newbie" aboard. Four
months in...you should be starting to mat up nicely at this point.
My 3 year lociversary is June 30th.
That's too bad that you are getting negativity from the family. But
I guess those closest to you are sometimes the ones that hurt you
more than anyone.
Thanks for joining!

hi, i am new to the group. the name of the group/magazine really
drew me in. i have been au natural, two and a half years. i just
recently started my loc journey, feb 04. overall, i have enjoyed my
natural experience including the locs. i am hoping to add my "two
cents" to this group while gaining more knowledge and support from
the group. most of my negativity regarding natural hair specifically
locs has come from my family vs. strangers (extended fam).

"If you can't eat it,

...don't put it on your skin" was the mantra I remember from The
Natural Hair Expo in Philly yesterday. One of the hair care experts
on a panel said this as a rule of thumb if you are uncertain about a
hair or skincare product. This is because products are absorbed into
your bloodstream through your skin the same as if you had ingested
them. Food for thought.

Hello Knaturalone,
Welcome!
I think it is really interesting to be a natural hair stylist in a
place where natural hair is not yet widely accepted. Do you get
people coming from far and wide to have you do their hair?

Welcome Meyerdawn/Children's Hair

Welcome Meyerdawn,
Thanks for being a part of our mailing list.
I am curious, how old is your daughter? Did she set out to get her
hair straightened behind your back, or did someone else decide
to "help her out" when you weren't around?
I don't have children, so I have not had to face this problem
personally. I wonder if it is ok to let a child experiment with
different hair styles, always instilling in her that natural is best
and hoping that she will eventually follow your example?

You may want to try Carols Daughter at carolsdaughter.com. I use them myself and often recommend them for my clients. She is based out of Brooklyn, NY and ALL of her hair products are the BOMB!!! She seems to be fairly priced and I would rather support her than going to one of the neightborhood beauty supply stores here where I live. Let me know if that works out for you.

Re: [Naturally_You] Welcome New Members!

Greetings NY!

I'm Knaturalone - and have been that way for eight years now! I am a loctician who owns and runs my business in the midwest. I live in a city where wearing ones hair natural is still a bit un-natural, if you know what I mean. I hope to gain from this group further information and encouragement that I can pass on to my clients and potential clients regarding accepting our hair in its natural state. I'm always trying to surround myself with positive, conscious people who are never tired of becoming more knowledgeable about the subject and hope to offer the same.

Peace to all!

Hi I'm a new member. I am determined to keep my daughters hair
naturally beautiful. Her hair was hot combed for the first time two
weeks ago against my will. Hopefully I can keep it from happening
again. It has already affected her self-esteem. I am trying to
find sources of jojoba and coconut oil, shea butter and oil, and
essential oil for a low price. If you have some suggestions please
share.

Welcome Vincelle/Starting Locs

2006-07-26 04:44:26

Welcome Vincelle,
Thank you for being a part of our mailing list. This list will be
informative and is moderated in order to keep negative energy at
bay.
In this issue of Naturally You!, there is a quiz called "Are You
Ready for Locs?". I think the most important thing to be aware of
are the stages and maintenance of locs. So many people, myself
included, jump into locing and have no idea what to expect. Doing
research on that will make your transition go more smoothly, and
keep stress to a minimum.

Re: [Naturally_You] Digest Number 0

2006-07-25 20:06:25

My name is Vincelle. I've been natural since 1997 and I love it! I hope
to gain a sense of oneness with others who also sport natural styles, but
in a non-judgmental way. Other groups of this sort have cropped up, but
they tend to be on the judgmental or militant side in terms of natural
being the only way, coloring is also wrong, etc. I've had enough of that!
I advocate a natural lifestyle (hair, nails, diet, etc.), but I open my
arms in love for the whole world, even my processed brothas and sistahs!
I also want to learn about different ways to style natural hair. I've
been wearing a TWA of various lengths for years and am thinking about
transitioning to locs or twists.
What I can contribute? Love, support, an active and progressive voice.
Peace,
Vincelle
